3 years ago if I said that they were going to burn Teldrassil to the ground would you have replied with “They can’t do that it’s a Capital City!” ?
Anyone here who’s honest with themselves would have said “Blizzard would never just destroy Capital Cities of player races.” And here we are. So saying absolutes like “They won’t/can’t kill Tyrande off” are rubbish when we have an Everest sized mountain of evidence to suggest that Night Elf Fans should expect the worst and zero evidence to suggest we should expect something we’ll enjoy.
You mean if 3 years ago, they said that they would burn down teldrassil, destroy darkshore, make the night elves near extinct, give ashenvale to the Horde, make all innocent night elves suffer in wow hell forever and then ignore the whole thing afterwards?
To top if all off, praise those that commited Teldrassil as noble heroes.
The character’s timeline is based on their level. During the level 1 to 10 spread that Exile’s Reach covers, a whole bunch of WOW history has not happened yet.
Oh, god, they’re trying to soft retcon the worst lore decision that they ever made? They -don’t- want Warcraft lore to be trapped in the shadow of this extremely ill-conceived, dark, nightmarish plot twist that made me actually physically sick to my stomach the first time I experienced it? They don’t want new players to the Horde, a playable faction in a heroic fantasy rpg, to be immediately shamed for their choice of faction and made to believe that their characters are mega-hitler?
You’re right, it is kinda weird that they’re leaving in the references to Teldrassil in Alliance questing. Very odd that they’re not excising this awful stain from questing on both sides in a possibly misguided but at least well-intended effort at freeing our brains from this two-year-long nightmare caused by one bad decision. Frankly, the fact that they added ‘you lost and suck and we hate you’ into the opening Kul Tiras dialogue is a little strange -
I seriously would have expected them to give Night Elves a new capital. I mean… not many folks used Teldrassil. I thought they would give the Night Elves a new one that people would use more often.
This response is being posted per request from Kyalin:
It is not acceptable to merely sweep this under the rug and not address it. They obliterated two playable races. It’s obvious how the attempt to tell and not show people that the Forsaken have changed isn’t going to work, and the motivations to play Night Elves can only be expressed in terms of masochism. Yes, Teldrassil was a mistake. Yes, fixing it is going to be hard, but they DO have to fix it - not just sweep it under the rug and pretend that it didn’t happen. How they fix it in a way that’s fair to everyone is a separate conversation, but again, they DO have to fix it.
What? The whole War of Thorns was a terrible idea is every way, shape, and form. It SHOULD be forgotten, retconned, and completely excised from the lore. All of it, including the consequences for the NEs that you hated so much. New players should not know or care about it. I am in favor of this, and you should be too.
Because as I’ve stated before… timeline is dependent on character level… in the level range Exile’s Reach covers, Teldrassil HAS NOT BURNED YET. The Undercity still stands.
I’m all for retconning all of it - but they aren’t retconning it. They are just ignoring it and hoping that people will forget, so that the Night Elves are still in ruins.
