Something wrong with ret?

Introduction:
I have recently came back to wow to find it a completely different game. Used to play as a R-sham and paired up with an arms warrior…we peaked at 2300 in wotlk. called it quits shortly after because of school/worklife Good times!

I remeber prot/ret, ret/holy was a thing back then and was very tough. A lot of my hardest fights was against prot/ret hybrid warrior. AT that time if a paladin used blessing of protection on himself he would also gain a debuff not allowing another protection spell for 30 seconds if I remember correctly…In addition pally wings, and divine protection applied the same debuff, along with a debuff to friendly players who had blessing of protection casted on them.

All said above, the underlying theme was that if a pally used a big survival cd he/she would not have another one to use for another 30 seconds. That was fair back then and you didn’t really see people complaining about it. Oh yeah; you could attack though divine protection back then but the damage done was only 50 percent of normal damage. Also too me the move divine protection seemed to be a defensive move and not meant to be used too offensivley hence the damage nerf when in it. I can’t remember if you could attack while buffed with blessing of protection, I don’t think you could tbh. And that makes sense.

I play rogue now and boy, is it crazy having a pally use bop immediately, attack though it then use some 50k absorb bubble, into a divine protection which again they attack though. All the meanwhile it seems like their wings buff never goes away. It seems highly unfair aswell considering the damage that a ret paladin can put out in one hammer of justice or whatever name the 5 second stun is called. Never have I seen a class with so much burst damage and almost an endless plethora of survival cd’s with short timers. Don’t quote me on this because I never checked the tooltip but BOP must be 1 min or under considering how often it’s used.

I know duels are not supposed to be balanced, but jeez its almost impossible for me to do anything to any decent paladin, mind you my weapons are 375 - 370 but hey its all I could muster up in 2 months of bad rng loot crates (I’ll let asmondgold talk about that).

I used to love this game, still do too, I’m just wondering why paladins only got buffed and it seems like every other OG class had something taken away. (wind fury for shamans), (preparation gone for rogues), (aimed shot, steady shot, wyvern sting gone?), (warriors lost spell reflect? I think I haven’t seen it used) I can go on but it seems like allies really got the long end of the stick this patch. Not sure how long its been like this but I can’t seem to understand.

A good way for you to relearn the classes is just play around with the class trials. It’s free and they have all their abilities for you to see.

Pallies just counter rogues right now. Rogues eat almost everything tho

Forbearance still happens after BoP and bubble. Tbh it’s sad but I don’t know exactly how long it is now (it was shorter in Legion I think because of Ashbringer traits). It’s either 20 or 30 seconds maybe.

This is the long and short of it. Blizzard appears to never give consideration to 1v1 as they tune specs and abilities, which is sort of the right way to go about it. Team fights really ought to be at the heart of class balance.

Rogues are crazy in 1v1 too, rets just happen to counter you along with most other classes due to their multitude of strong defensive cooldowns.

Blizzard admitted that classes wouldn’t be balanced around 1v1 yet we still have duals. Some better form of standardization, perhaps?

I’d be more inclined to agree if duels offered some brand of reward but at the moment, they can’t be considered methods of progression by any measure.

WPvP exists too but balancing classes with WPvP in mind would be both impossible and undesirable.

Which I’m sure is why they’re not balanced around such. They were less of a problem in Vanilla when they were introduced. Now, I really don’t know what the point is.

Still too short for a fight reset CD, IMO.

Unless they’re purged or MD’d. Feels bad.

Or spell stolen

I can’t beat a good rogue. Lotta bad rogues out there too though, thank God. :cowboy_hat_face:
