Some thoughts on negativity

This video is probably the most well thought out and constructive video I’ve ever seen when talking about the state of the game and complaints that people have about it. In the video, Hirum really digs deep into the psychology of why negativity is so prevalent in the WoW community. One of the best points he brings up is the idea of negativity bias, which is described essentially as giving more importance to something negative than something positive, even if the two things are of equal importance.

He goes on to discuss the difference between constructive criticism vs. Unconstructive criticism, and even gives an example of a minor complaint. He talks about the Covenant campaign quests being too easy. The premise of the complaint is perfectly reasonable, but it’s the conclusions we as players come to that makes the difference between constructive and not. Rather than just saying Blizzard is composed of brain-dead dev’s, actually offer solutions to the problem.

Near the end, he even shares a post by a game dev from another game, can’t remember what one. The post explains why the dev’s on that game don’t post as much anymore on the forums, because of how demoralizing it is with all of the unconstructive comments. I think that is the same case with our WoW dev’s. They use to be so active on these forums, but the toxicity has driven them away. As the dev puts it, they aren’t paid to wade through pages of muck to find the occasional nuggets of actual feedback.

The video makes it important to note: criticism is perfectly fine. He even uses a couple other youtubers as examples of what constructive criticism looks like. The dev’s want our feedback, because they do care about making the game better and fun. They do miss the mark every now and then, but that does not mean they are out to get us. They do not hate fun. They are so passionate about the game and want us to enjoy it. And they want to hear our feedback in a meaningful, constructive way.

Thanks for reading

Normally I wouldn’t bump, but I feel strongly enough about this and would like more people to see it.

just fyi, chances are the reason you’re not getting bites is because a lot of us are tired of youtubers/streamers videos being advertised here with no attempt at starting an actual discussion off of it. if i have to waste my time watching their click bait-y videos to join in, i’m not interested

that or nobody is interested in the topic. 50/50

I’m going to go with the first one. If people want to link a video after they’ve written their own breakdown and opinion on it, then cool. But if it’s just a video link and “I feel strongly about this,” that’s a no from me.

You know, that’s actually a pretty good point, I didn’t consider that. The video is also kinda long, which would also be a turn off. I’ll see if I can tweak it

Yeah, just a quick breakdown and your thoughts on what’s said would be good.

LOL no.

You’re not playing a game made for charity by charity. You’re playing a game taking money off you. You know, your hard earned money.

Anything you’re paying money for has to be designed properly. If this was a freemium or buy to play game, your points about being chill about it would be understandeable.

Cool video, but, there is only one small problem here … when you play the game, and feel for yourself the problems that exist in it, it ends up being your “source”.
Example - pvp. When we try to get 2k rating, it is easy to point out the recurring problems in the current pvp system. And it is very clear and obvious that nothing is done to improve something in this regard, due to the problems of years and years that are not solved.
And what is my source for stating this? - I’m just playing the game and seeing it with my own eyes. And, every reply we get, is from someone who plays and feels the same (here in the forums). In the end, players can talk and tell their experiences and they can be simply negative, so each support, like, or reply we receive, ends up coming from people with similar problems and this creates a general consensus that there are problems in that region of the game. …after a while of debating these problems, it ends up creating a kind of general opinion where all the players know that the problem is there and it is impossible that the company has not noticed … and as nothing is done, the blame will fall on the developers. This is kind of obvious, right?

I believe this part is debatable for a lot of people, and is what they feel is part of the problem. I’ve seen it mentioned over and over.

I like how they make this statement about “Hey chill out man it’s just a game sure it’s bad but at the end of the day remember it’s a game” while it makes you pay $15 every month as if that money doesn’t matter at all.

It’s a game and a business.

No offense but people could do with putting their own opinion to start said discussion. As someone mentioned. And the video in a nutshell.

Yes, and if I pay for something, I want to enjoy that experience. People who don’t feel that way tend to unsub.

If sunk cost wasn’t such a strong pull I feel like more people would bail. With this feeling of putting a lot of effort into the game over a long period of time, along with knowing they’ve enjoyed it at some point, people want the game to be good, which is why they give feedback. Just my opinion and views on the matter.

Why do people say this like no one realizes it?
Sports are only games but who here hasn’t seen the giant mob fights at sporting events?
People care about things to different levels and trying to diminish their passion for something by saying “it’s just a game” isn’t going to work.

A company only has one goal.

Exactly why I don’t buy into the sob story of "Hey guys can we all get together and sing since it’s just a game so we help the multi billion dollar company do better? "

Exactly.

Another exactly.

Ok guys, the OP has been updated, as per your request. Sorry about the unintended clickbait

Context my friend context.

The OP tries to bring about a sense of “Hey let’s chill out it’s a game after all sure it’s bad but lol let’s not be mad at a game”.

I’m basically: “Lol no. The game takes money off me because I play it. It’s not a charity”.
