I personally thought SOM was a HUGE success from lev1 to 59. All downhill after that

I’m not offended, again who’d want to be stuck on a server where they’ve done everything.
Also they’d have needed to do classic era to know how much of a failure era servers would be.
Yes I agree, the people managing them have a far better grasp on what to do than current Blizzard devs because they actually play the game.
The main reason it failed was the fact that they released it in the middle of tbc, right after everyone just played through classic. I’m a die hard classic fan and would be happy to play fresh classic every fees years but I know there aren’t a whole boatload of us.
I played som and loved it until the oceanic raiding community died but in hindsight they shouldn’t of done som yet. It was a poor decision, I just hope they haven’t killed the hype of future classic rereleased and atleast hope they learn to let people play through the current classic expansion and probably wotlk too before they announce another classic fresh to build some hype and bring in a bigger more stable population.

I don’t think it was a failure. IMO it was a sandbox to test the idea of seasonal servers, They knew that it wouldn’t be a huge draw due to the TBC servers existing along side them.

I still play SOM and there’s still a good amount of people around too. Not understanding why people would go out of their way to talk smack but… to each their own i guess. There’s literally 50 level 60’s in orgrimmar alone.

I enjoyed my time playing it, but I’m too old to play wow in zoomer mode. The rushed timeline isn’t for me. But, it did bring me back to wow after taking a year off.
With cloud servers, I wouldn’t think the overhead of keeping the lights on SoM servers is that much. Hardly call it a failure when its bundled subscription with all other versions of the game, especially when there is players that only play SoM.
A different game with the same content, the only new thing they added in SoM was the iron man buff a few raid mechanics.
Personally, I like to think they offered SoM to give something to the players that seeked more of a challenge and to cash in on the hardcore playstyle before it got out of reach. Defiantly too soon, defiantly over estimated the amount of that type of player.

dont forget about the other “challenges” lol. Meaning nerfs to most instanced gold farms for starters…

I feel like the failure of SoM isn’t an indicator that Classic is bad, but that Blizzard just didn’t want to take care of it.
People started leaving Classic late in the experience because of issues like botting where Blizzard just took complete inaction. The result was a lower interest for SoM, plus, yes, it was clashed against TBCC’s release. The reality of why we’ll never get Classic+ has the same reason as that, by the way:
BLIZZARD DOES NOT WANT WOW CLASSIC TO SURVIVE.
They had 0 intention of creating it, it was only ever made in the first place because Omar HAPPENED to find a backup and then create some genius code maneuvers that allowed us to get it. It split the playerbase too heavily during late BFA and early Shadowlands, and Blizzard doesn’t want WoW to be the next Runescape, with more players playing the old, outdated version of the game while the devs of the CURRENT game sit around looking like dumbasses trying to figure out why no one wants to play it.

They should merge classic all down to 2 servers, the PVP server and the PVE server.
Then they should do classic+ treatment on those new megaservers. Instead of just trying to sell people crappier Nostalrius, go OSRS treatment. Make new content that fits within the old framework.
