I will say just generally I dislike the change. It’s not as bad as OP made it out to be, but I think it’s way too late to make a sweeping change like this.
Won’t harm my enjoyment of Hunter, but I’m not a Hunter main.

Probably like the mages familiar.
It is a marksman hunter so it is about your weapon not the pets. That being said was a bit bummed that beast mastery is having pet dps reduced by 150% as well.
It exists to buff you and give utility.
There are a lot of other things with it sprinkled in all the changes.
Yeah I don’t like that at all. Being able to choose your pet has been like the most fundamental aspect of hunters since the beginning. Lone wolf is great as an option. Having constant access to hero is great and should be the case across the board for all hunter pet specs. But there is a very easy way to give us that without taking away this fundamental choice from one of the specs.
On the plus side, I no longer need to worry about playing my priest again.
Finally, we’re re-theming Purge the Wicked into a Shadow spell
If my disc priest needs shadow to do damage, no thanks.
It’s pretty clear they have a certain class fantasy for mm hunters which doesn’t involve pets. They’ve been trying to get rid of them for longer than I can remember and just kept the option there to appease people.
That spell doing Radiant damage made no sense in the first place. Especially when it’s just Holy Fire but with a different name.
This change doesn’t get rid of the pet. It just gets rid of any choice about the pet.
I mean, it still has a pet though, it’s just that from what we can see you no longer choose which pet. If they’d committed to the removal of pets, and baked in lone wolf (which I think was a thing with MoP talent trees) as a baseline passive, possibly removing the active ability from your pets as MM, that’d be removing pets from the MM fantasy. This is just a falconer.
Still the final nail in the coffin for me. Or rather my priest.
My marksman hunter never used a pet to begin with so losing them isn’t that big a deal to me. I’ve got a beast master hunter as well if needed but the marksman was focused on killing foes before they ever got close so I went for lone wolf trading having a pet for damage with them where as my beast master has the talent to let the top of my stable join me in the fight alongside the main pet. Although…why spirit beasts can cloak like cats I’ll never know lol
Genuinely such a bad change.
Petless Marksmanship is the best Marksmanship, and I’m glad that they’ve decided to once again support it for real (instead of the wimpy Lone Wolf “bonus”). If people want to play with pets, well, Beast Mastery is right there.
This is not petless MM. Quite the opposite, really.
This is MM with mandatory pet eagle.
One thing I learned when they butchered Range SV back in WoD.
Don’t play Hunter lol, especially after seeing this this class probably gets the most drastic changes.
Still remember when some idiot made non SV specs unable to use traps at the start of Legion.
Idk about that.
How I read it, it’s essentially just an eagle that flies down and buffs you. No different than a war using commanding shout.
I could be wrong though.
It sounds like it’s no more of a “pet” than the Murder of Crows is…
I didn’t read all through those changes. Hopefully we no longer have to spend so much time standing still like a Destruction Lock or Arcane mage, etc… being that we are a ranged projectile DPS’er.
