As a side note, early on I had initially planned to update my entire operating system, however I’m running a fairly old computer (not old enough that I should be having fully unplayable game issues, but it’s certainly not at the top of its class by any means). Anyway, it turns out that I cannot update the system beyond it’s current operating system at this time; not sure if Apple plans to make newer operating systems compatible with this model at a later time, but as for now I’m as current as I can be running Monterey 12.7.3 (basic specs below, followed by detailed system info):

Anyway, I believe it was about a week ago I had the problem resurface (apologies for not providing that error report, however it was identical in behavior and actions to reproduce). Didn’t have time to dig into it however seemed to go away on its own after returning from class ~6 hours later. That is until more recently I had it happen (one or two days ago, been really busy sorry). This is the relevant info I have for the problems that came up:

Was booted out of WoW and then from all processes shortly after:
sent back to black screen with apple logo and some writing over the top in white saying “your computer has restarted due to an error” or something, then it says to hit any key to proceed, and logs on like normal but a WoW error pops up as does a system error which I have provided both below:

WoW error:

After some research I tried resetting the SMC by shutting down and then holding left shift, alt, control and power for 10 sec and then starting up. As expected, nothing changed.

I’m not computer illiterate but I have no background in tech so I did my best to read through and decipher what I could. It looked like a graphics issue and/or security issue, so first off I reduced my graphics settings substantially (I noticed as my computer would be nearing the point of terminating all processes and restarting as mentioned above, the fans would either be going full power; or it would be like they wouldnt engage at all. not sure if that’s relevent, but I noticed it was particularly bizarre to not have any middle speed, either all on or all off. Anyway…

I then followed a list of several blizzard fixes using both disk utility and terminal commands, and obviously the battle.net quick fixes as well as disabling/not loading/deleting addons and all that usual stuff. In order I did the following:

CAS System Unable to Initialize ClientHandler
Updated: 4 months ago Article ID: 13934
Product:
Common Problems
• Cannot start WoW. ClientHandler: initialization error: failed to create storage component.
• The CAS system was unable to initialize.
This error message usually signifies an issue with the Client Access Security (CAS) system responsible for authenticating and granting access to the game. Please try these steps to see if it helps you:

Windows

  1. Enable Secondary Logon
  2. Disable read-only settings for WoW folder
  3. Delete the “Indices” folder inside “World of Warcraft\data” folder
  4. Scan and Repair the game
  5. Create new administrator user account

Mac

  1. Repair Shared Folder permissions

  2. Repair Disk Permissions

  3. Repair Application Support Folder permissions

  4. Scan and Repair the game

  5. Create new administrator user account

(I’m a mac user so obviously that’s what I did)

First:

Repairing Shared Folder Permissions (Mac)
Updated: 10 months ago Article ID: 24144

The Mac OS X® Shared folder holds information for Blizzard titles for all users. Sometimes it’s necessary to create the folder manually or repair folder permissions.
To find the Shared folder:

  1. In Finder, select Go > Go to Folder or press Cmd+Shift+G.

  2. Type /Users

  3. Click Go.

Checked /Users to see if “shared” folder existed, which it did

Warning: The following processes modify permission settings using the Terminal application. If you are not familiar with Terminal and UNIX-like environments, proceed with caution. Incorrect commands may result in data loss or unusable system software. Improper alteration of permissions can result in reduced system security or exposure of private data. This method requires a non-blank admin password.
If the Shared folder exists:

  1. Open Terminal (located in /Applications/Utilities)

  2. Type the following: sudo chmod -R 1777 /Users/Shared

  3. Press Return.

Note I had to enter my admin password and hit return before next step

  4. Quit Terminal.

Second:

Running Hard Drive Tests
Updated: 4 months ago Article ID: 25946

A corrupted or damaged hard drive can cause long loading screens, game lockups, crashes, and performance issues. Try the troubleshooting steps below to diagnose and repair hard drive issues.
If these steps do not resolve the issue, you may need to take the computer to a computer repair specialist to have the hardware issue resolved.

The Disk Utility can be used to diagnose and repair corrupted hard drive sectors.

Performed disk Utility First aid on Volume Contents, Volumes, Containers, and Disk. All were fine.

Third:

Repairing Application Support Permissions
Updated: 4 years ago Article ID: 82343

To repair Application Support file permissions:

  1. Open Terminal, located in /Applications/Utilities.

  2. Type or copy and paste the following command for the affected application: sudo chmod 0754 ~/Library/Application\ Support/Battle.net

  3. Press Return.
If your system is not in English, you might need to translate Library/Application appropriately.
Note: You may be prompted for your administrator password when using the commands above. You may not see characters appear when typing, though it will accept your password.

     Did that.

Fourth:

Repairing Battle.net Games
*Updated: 2 years ago Article ID: 7655 *
Product:

Corrupted and damaged game files can cause a wide variety of problems and errors.
Updating the game can often resolve these issues, please check for game updates before using the repair tool.

  1. Open the Battle.net desktop app.

  2. Click the icon of the game you are trying to repair.

  3. Click the cogwheel next to the Play button and select Check for Updates.
If your game is up-to-date and the problem persists, use the repair tool:

  4. Click the cogwheel next to the Play button and select Scan and Repair.

  5. Click Begin Scan.

  6. Wait for the repair to finish.

If you have tried these steps and still require assistance, visit our Technical Support Forums.

     Did that several times.

Fifth:
I created a new administrator profile called “Test” via the following directions:

Creating a New Administrator Account
Updated: 10 months ago Article ID: 34550

Sometimes it is necessary to create a new administrator account for troubleshooting purposes. Follow the steps for your operating system below:

Mac
Note: When you create a new administrator account, a separate Home folder is created so settings from another user account do not interfere with troubleshooting.
*

  1. Click on the Apple menu and select System Preferences.
  2. Click Users & Groups.
  3. Click Add (+) below the list of accounts.
  4. Choose Administrator from the New Account pop-up menu.
  5. Enter a full name for the account. Note: An account name is generated automatically. If you want to use a different account name, enter it now. After the account is created, you can’t change the account name.
  6. Enter the account password in the Password and Verify fields, and then enter a hint to help you remember the password.
  7. Click Create User.
  8. Log in to the new Administrator account and retest the application you were having problems with.

Tried everything here?

If you have tried these steps and still require assistance, visit our Technical Support Forums (World of Warcraft) (StarCraft II) (Diablo III) (Hearthstone) (Heroes of the Storm) (Overwatch) or contact us.

At this point I tried running the game as usual with no addons, and the system restarted erroneously just like it had before I tried any fixes. Instead of logging back into my main admin profile, for the first time I went thru the prompts and loaded up the new “Test” admin profile I had created earlier. I opened retail WoW launcher app and ran it without opening battle.net app or any addon loader app. Everything went perfectly fine, fans ran a little hard but no errors nor any shutdowns or issues.

So my first question is, of course:

Why did this fix it when nothing else did?

Next… I mean, it’s certainly nice having my really serious issues resolved, because now i can at least play the game, but it would be even better to have it playable on my initial user profile (rather than the “Test” profile) so that I can use the apps and things I like to use while playing the game (without reinstalling, or moving things and setting them up on the test profile, etc… you know what I mean). So my second question:

Is there a way to repair my normal admin profile so that things run smoothly, like they do on this test admin profile?

Lastly, I would hate to be setting up my apps and settings all over again, only to somehow taint this new user profile and have the same problem start all over again. That being said:

Is there anything I need to watch out for that would compromise the integrity of the game’s playability on this “Test” profile?

Apple has a bad history with intel driver. i believe on macOS 12 it was panicing a lot and crashing. it was fixed in macOS 13 and then macOS 14 broke it again as you can see it in [Feedback Needed] WoW Crashing on connect under macOS Sonoma (14.0) - #297 by Jayjaybro-archimonde

My suggestion is to upgrade it to macOS 13, and again make sure it’s Ventura and NOT Sonoma because Sonoma is just as broken.

That was actually my initial solution to all of this mess - however I am actually running a 2016 MacBook Pro which is not compatible with Ventura (typical Apple and their forced obsolescence… :face_with_symbols_over_mouth: but that’s a rant for a different day…).

The reason I posted this here was to hopefully find a solution that fixes the Monterey issue, which I think is possible with relative ease from somebody who has the appropriate level of technological aptitude. …which I do not.

The reason I say that is because I have actually been able to overcome my crashing issue by creating a second administrative user (i wrote this above, I know it’s a lot but I feel like I’m repeating myself so I want to iterate that I’m not trying to be condescending by repeating myself… lol) and then loading up WoW on that administrator user and it worked just fine. This tells me it’s some sort of permissions error, or security maybe?

Anyway, if all else fails and no one can offer a better solution, I’ll probably just continue using my “alternate admin user” workaround for however long that manages to prolong my ability to access WoW. After that point, I’ll either invest in a new computer (which I hate to do when this one is running completely fine, except for the one issue that affects one game), or I may attempt to bypass the restrictions imposed on that OS update by using something like OpenSource Legacy patcher. I’ve never used it before but it looks pretty straightforward.

Again, I would much prefer if someone had a better fix that could explain my situation. It’s an obscure issue but it sounds like I’m not alone on it, and since all of the 2016 macbook pro users (and earlier years) are restricted to Monterey (or earlier) then I feel like it’s highly unlikely that I would be the only 2016 Macbook pro user that doesnt want to buy a new computer just to keep playing wow.

Thoughts? Much appreciated so far, thank you for your input!

Beginning of Post Two

Problems have been worse the last two days, so after some more research I decided to try turning off my firewall in System settings. In addition I also checked for updates as well as ran a scan on my game files using the Battle.net tool. This seemed to alleviate the problem however it didn’t last long as I already started having issues again today where the computer crashed at least three times since 1 PM (it’s now about 330).

I’m running another scan and repair of my WoW game files through battle net and will attempt to try a couple other remedies. I did find an interesting idea, sort of a quick fix that I stumbled across in the comments of a similar posting, so I guess we’ll give that a try too, and if it proves successful I’ll post it below. All in all this has just been a really frustrating experience.

I really don’t want to have to get a new computer when this one seems to work relatively fine except for tasks that seem to use a bit more processing power; although the most recent crashes have left me feeling somewhat concerned that the problem goes deeper than just kernel panics from graphics card or security yada yada… It’s really upsetting after all the work I’ve put in to try resolving the problems… the crashes are more frequent and are now happening from low intensity CPU activities like earlier when it crashed while I was just searching for possible solutions on google and making notes in textedit (aka the crashes are occurring during things other than just crashing when I’d be playing WoW). I don’t know if this helps identify the issue (that being, having been informed that this issue exists outside of WoW as well) but any thoughts or ideas, really anything at this point would be immensely appreciated.

P.S. Also worth noting that these issues continued to happen even when I tried logging out of my typical administrative user profile on my computer and then logged into a new administrator profile (named “Test”) in order to try resolving any permissions issues, however it still crashed while using that user profile… so what I thought was my safety net backup solution is now just another failed attempt at fixing my nightmare problem. I still have one super ultra fix-it secret weapon that I can utilize if all else fails, but that requires a complete overhaul of my computer and wiping out everything on it (see my last post) so I’d like to avoid having to use that option if possible… basically if I’m the commander in chief and my computer is battling against the evil crashes, this option is my “nuke”. So i’d much rather try some other options first. Anyway, any help would be really … helpful  haha. Please <3

Just out of curiosity, have you run Onyx on your Mac to test and repair your OS? Since the game works in your Test account, there’s obviously something corrupted in your main account. Onyx is the first diagnostic I’d try, before trying a paid utility, like TechTool. Plus, you can download the version of Onyx specifically for your OS.

Dark, they said the issues DID continue on a fresh account, not that they stopped.

I recognize this crash and it was one that was never possible to work around. it went away in ventura though. but then sonoma brought back other driver crashes. In general the issue is that apple abandoned that hardware and driver years ago and they don’t care. Blizzard can’t do much about it when apple abandons hardware and leaves it to rot. They are pretty much forced to do the same cause it’s not like blizzard can patch a bug in kernel driver.

The sadly best two options for this user is to use a patcher to update to ventura (NOT sonoma) and retest it. or get a new mac. Or consider a PC even if they aren’t willing to play apples game of “throw away your machine and replace it any time we abandon it”

I love my apple hardware, but I do think the way apple does business is pretty awful. It’s literally a planned obsolescence strategy that they’ve gotten away with far too long. :\
