I will probably be doing this in 3 days when im sure my monthly prepaid thing has gone through.
after reading through article however i have some questions?
1.im guessing log in with account means through the phone? do i have to do this EVERY TIME I start up the battle net app on my desktop? because this could be really irritating. and might just put me off it altogether.
2.sending the sms code to set up sms protect okay how does this work exactly is it like a notification i get on my phone? if so would it be like a message in like the text box area where say i get notified my monthly payment went through? i use android if that helps.
3. how is it linked to my authenticator number? im confused. i thought this was to replace the physical one.
4. i have the old authenticator app downloaded BUT NEVER SWITCHED OVER to the actual app. will this change anything?
5. could i just switch to the authenticator app then switch to the battle net app when i get new phone or would it better to just switch to battle.net app instead?
You log into the mobile app the first time. Like the physical one you can set the behavior to either be needed every time or to allow recognized devices to bypass.
The authenticator app acts like a notification. SMS is a text only needed of changing account information such as password.
When you set up the authenticator you will get two numbers you will be advised to save. A new serial number and a restore code if you need to reinstall the app on a new device. It replaces the physical one, so remove it first.
The old authenticator app is actually going away at some point.
There was also lots of great advice given to ya in this thread as well!!
It’s a big scary jump going from one known thing to an unknown, I’m happy you are making that leap before your physical authenticator dies and the process becomes much harder than it should be.
Just to add, you can probably uninstall the stand alone authenticator app. Use the bnet app if you only have a physical authenticator now. I see there’s issues still setting up the stand alone. And don’t forget to read the migration support page, most of the questions are addressed there.
this is what has me really worried. so does it require the old authenticator app? should i set that up first or what? so if i have the phone number linked to my account do i still need to do extra step of adding the phone notifications?
No and no.
There shouldn’t be an issue with setting up the Authenticator on the Battle.net App. Some folks have some trouble transitioning from the Authenticator App to the Battle.net one.
If you already have it set up, then no.
Just so we don’t miss anything I wanted to cover these too.
Yes, it means to log into the your Battle.net account through the mobile app. As mentioned you can set it up through your security options to ask you each time you log in, but it will usually only ask every once in a while or when there has been a major shift in logging in (i.e. location, ip, etc…).
Yes, you should get a text.
I don’t understand the question here, or what you mean by Authenticator number. How is what linked to your Authenticator?
The Battle.net App includes the Authenticator now and yes, once set up it would be in place of your physical authenticator.
You don’t need the old one, that is being retired entirely and will only be available in the Battle.net mobile app. Setting it up will only require you to migrate to the Battle.net mobile app once it is fully retired.
It would be better just to switch to the Battle.net app. No need to complicate it by moving to the old version first.
Technically no, as you mentioned having a physical authenticator. Removing that first would be a part of the adding the bnet app, and don’t need the stand alone authenticator at all.
You do have to login to the bnet app, but not every time, unless you set it differently under the account manager in security.
I mean do i have to link the serial number from my physical authenticator to the mobile battle net app when i set it up?
No, if you aren’t using the physical Authenticator the serial number and restore code for it won’t be needed.
You’ll have a different serial number and restore code when you set up the Battle.net App.
okay thanks for the help will let you know if i have any more questions.
what about those who don’t own a mobile phone, because of things like say, not being able to afford one, can they still add a physical authenticator, if it’s in working condition and they got the serial number/restore number? because i know some buddies in that situation, and i’d hate to lose friends that are like in-game family to me, because they can’t add a physical authenticator they own, because they can’t afford a smartphone. those things are uber-expensive
The key fob are dying and cant be bought anymore.
Physical authenticators can still be added but all of them have limited life left. The batteries aren’t replaceable and the ones still around are already at or over their expected lifetime.
There are several free or very low cost smartphones available from the government. Have your friends do a search for “Free Government Phones” and they will get a listing for a bunch. Their states website should have a link to the reputable ones out there. I don’t know if all of them will work with the app, but there should be plenty that do.
If your friends are US residents, there are government programs to help people get free or heavily discounted cell phones.
sorry for the sort of necro. due to some delays I am finally ready to start the process.
so if im correct the process goes like this:
step 1. disconnect/remove physical authenticator from account.
step2. turn on phone
step 3. if I have authenticator app downloaded (which i do.) uninstall it or it may cause issues yes?
step 4. receive the security code through my phone notifications.
step 5. log in through the new battle net app on my phone and type in the security code. (will it prompt for an authenticator code? i have seen quite a few posts saying this is the case.)
step 6.wait for setup to finish.
step 7. obtain new mobile authenticator.
did i miss any steps?
It shouldn’t cause any issues if you didn’t set it up on your account, though it is sunset, so there isn’t any reason to have it.
If you already disconnected the physical Authenticator from the account it won’t prompt for the code.
Make sure you write down your serial number and restore code you get when you set up the app. You may need that if you need to replace your phone or reinstall the app. Keep that info somewhere safe.
so i actually installed it way back in january when i first got my phone. i only just now got around to switching from physical. just to clarify i got it to point where it stated to remove old authenticator i take it from your responses that shouldn’t cause an issue?
(sorry just really dont want to get into scenario where im locked out of account and have to use live support or something.)
this code is it sent when i DOWNLOAD THE APP or when i finish setup? sorry if this is a dumb question i just need to know if i have to go in phone and track down the code first.
i also take it if i have the four bag slots that means i have sms protect set up?
Installing the app isn’t the same as setting it up. From what I can see on this account, you have the physical Authenticator still on it. So the Mobile Authenticator app is entirely superfluous.
Before setting up the Battle.net App you’d want to remove the physical one from your Battle.net account.
The code sent is a one time thing. The Serial Number and Restore Code are available after you have set up the Authenticator on your account. So from the Battle.net app you’d click on your Icon in the upper left corner of the screen. Then click “Authenticator” and then the gear in the right side of the screen. You should see the Serial & Restore Codes tab.
You do that after you have set up the app.
Yes.
when i detach the authenticator will it require the security question setup on my account as well the sms text security code or just that?
also wondering if it would be better to remove old authenticator mobile app BEFORE i detach physical authenticator or no?
