So I 5-Starred Torghast

I got on when I got home, hopped into the Fracture Chambers, and 5-starred floor nine (having only done 2 stars last week). I’ve been complaining about how opaque and crappy this system is on other threads.

And y’know what? It’s still opaque and crappy. In order to 5 star, I had to take every anima power I hate (looking at you corrosive mist) and play in a manner that feels completely unnatural. I spent half my run looking around for elites close enough that I could pull them together, kill them within ten seconds-- and oh yeah, make sure to hit that Empower right before I nail them just to make sure I get that score boost.

I tried to keep my movements as efficient as possible, dropping off the NPCs I picked up and going to fight the floor elite while that little orb spawns, rolling back and snagging it, being very careful not to ever touch anything purple.

And I did it. I 5 starred it. And it’s absolutely, mind-numbingly terrible.

I wasn’t defeating a dungeon. I was filling out a checklist. This is not fun.

Did you kill every mob?

The only time I don’t like corrosive mist if it doesn’t keep dropping. I did floor 6 of twisting corridors with this power and bonus health points. What don’t you like about it?

It’s incredibly boring. I don’t play Brewmaster so I can Vivify myself. It’s cheesy and lame and if you enjoy it more power to you but I despise this power.

I get that it isn’t the most interesting ability and not liking it but I don’t get the cheesy part. What makes it cheesy?

I too think they kind of lost the plot with the points system in new torghast, its literally just try for 100% completion, pop empower on a big pull each floor (or the boss kill), dont pick any epic powers and fill out your bonus points checklist and wow 5 stars regardless of gear or ability.

Our highest DPS anima power is our heal. I stacked three and everything melted. Stacking three of any other power doesn’t do that.

It’s like turning on god mode. Yeah, it’s fun for about five seconds, and then the game’s just boring and dumb because nothing means anything.

Huh, I haven’t had such a success with three. I need a bit more for it to become how you described it. Though I suppose 10ilvls might do that.

Welp sorry you dislike it. Playing some of the other classes if that is the worst one for monks we have it a lot better than many other classes haha.

So, here’s the thing. It doesn’t really matter why I dislike it. I could dislike it because the buff makes me unreasonably angry. It just doesn’t matter. The fact is that the power is required for success.

In pre-rework Torghast I could do whatever I wanted and play with powers and have fun. That’s not an option now. That deviates from the checklist.

Monk has really boring powers. At least Brewmaster does. But that’s not what I’m whining about today!

Maybe, but probably not. You got a 42 on score for time. I’ve never gotten that, but I have done the “I was filling out a checklist. This is not fun.” thing to get a 5-star run with only +5 on time HERE (and I AFK’d 20 min intentionally and still couldn’t get that part of the score to zero). Anyway, you can go fast and powerful like you did -OR- you can ignore the timer and be sure to pick up as many Bonus Objectives as you can (still a checklist, but at least there’s options for how to fill it out).

It’s not really a complaint about the timer. The entire system is irritating, because I can’t play in Torghast, I have to dutifully follow my checklist or I’m not going to be able to make my gear so I can play in the content I actually want to do!

I get Blizzard’s intent here, really. It just absolutely misses the mark and encourages a really degenerate playstyle, even if it doesn’t outright enforce it.

Edit:

Also, the monk powers are really bad. If I didn’t take Corrosive Mist I probably wasn’t hitting some of those objectives either.

Can’t you just take the 0cd spammable, aoe touch of death + hp powers? Or whatever it was you were taking before? You went 34 points over flawless and as far as I understand it you only have to go flawless to unlock the next layer up (so like, 3 times?)

Monk powers do kinda suck in terms of not being that fun.

No matter what spec I do it in, the run ends up the same way where I roll as much as possible to be immune for 40 seconds at the boss then spam vivify until it dies.

Flawless is a 5-gem run… you only need a 4-gem run to unlock the next layer, but you’re absolutely right… in 3-4 weeks everyone can ignore this whole score mess (unless they want to punish/challenge themselves with a 6th Adamant Floor after a 5-gem run).

Those don’t always drop, and the setup for that is kind of dumb too.

Honestly I just kind of slapped whatever together because I don’t like most of the monk powers, and actively avoided Corrosive Mist because I hate it. So… No, not to get 5 stars.

And sure, after unlocking all the floors I can just derp around as usual for completion, never do the Adamant Vault for those rewards.

I’d really rather they actually make this content fun, though. I still believe Torghast has potential.

Pleonixian Command on a Fury Warrior… Now THAT is blatantly cheating…

Let’s explain it: If you cast Whirlwind, you are now able to apply an effect to up to 4 enemies + your primary target, for your next 2 ability casts… Pleonixian Command gives you 5 Phantasma per affected target when you use Victory Rush, or Impending Victory… Those 2 aforementioned abilities refresh upon getting a killing blow…

So, what happens when you pull a group of 5? You get 25 phantasma on the first cast, then 20 when you kill one, then 15, 10, 5… That suddenly means that instead of the expected 3-8 phantasma for killing a group of cheap trash, you can get upwards of 100+ phantasma… If you add a single enemy to the group you can effectively gain another 25 phantasma… Now take the Unstable Phantasma Lure Legendary (+25% to phantasma gains and a potential +10% phantasma buff too)…

Sometimes I can pull big groups on Floor 1 and end up with 1000+ phantasma if I get lucky with finding Pleonixian Command in the first few pulls… Get to Floor 3, and simply buyout the vendor, then use the 100 phantasma power item for an additional buff and carry on…

No, you only need 4 to unlock the next layer. 5 is for Vaults runs.

People WAY overblew the importance of Flawless runs.

People who take one look at a new thing and immediately flock to the forums to rage about how blizzard is the worst? Who could have predicted such a thing!?

I absolutely get what you are saying.

I feel like this concept is a step in the right direction but it feels like they just weren’t very creative with adapting a scoring system that is fun and challenging.

I’m fine with most of the scoring but they’re are certain one that stop the flow of fun in their tracks. Like don’t choose any epic powers…it’s like, okay, not a problem, but a lot of those powers are fun.

Im not sure what exactly it is but currently I agree, that while the concept is fun, it just falls a little short.

Hopefully they can dial it in over time and make it better.

As is, it’s not super difficult, it’s just kinda tedious keeping up with the checklist of things to do.

Addendum: I’m likely gonna look if it’s possible to ignore the BS that’s unfun to me and see if I can still 4-5 star it.

One thing that really gets my goat with this? I don’t really miss most of my epic powers. They weren’t that good anyway. I just took them because they were purple and wound up shooting myself in the foot because scoring.

Edit:

The more I’m thinking about it the more I’m starting to think I just really want monk anima powers that are actually fun.
