Check the edit to the post I made. =) Figured I’d tag it in there rather than make a whole new post about it and come off as derailing the thread.
So many Blizzard employees have left, we have ourselves a Ship of Theseus situation going on.
Who are these random people developing WoW, and how do they have the right to destroy and warp what it used to be?!?
here we go. interesting article

It was said half jokingly, and there are still a few of the originals working there, I think Samwise is still the art director, so the art still feels like WoW.
But so much of the game just does not feel like WoW. I feel like I’m playing a CIA experiment to test complacency in the population through addiction to repetitive tasks.
It’s funny because any ridiculous conspiracy theory you make up feels better to believe than “WoW is already dead and Activision is defiling its corpse for money”.
Ah I remember reading this a while back. No wonder it was ringing a bell. Personally I think the two best things necessary for a good MMO are:
-
Developers being allowed to just make the game with no time limit, ready when it’s ready.
-
The lead developer needs to be attuned enough to gamers that they know what they’re going to want in a game.
The second point is why I have high hopes for Ashes of Creation, because the guy heading it is someone who has been largely critical of MMOs in the past about where they went wrong in terms of being long term. Yoshi P from XIV was also an avid MMO fan and he’s done some incredible work, even with the design philosophy “This is a Final Fantasy title first, and an MMO second” mindset that puts some limitations on him. However he definitely knows how to please his audience and it’s why I said above it’s an amusing contrast because the XIV community considers him a god.
I’m at the point where the sunk cost fallacy is going to keep me playing WoW. I’ve sunk literally half my life into this MMO, I can’t start a new one.
I tried Final Fantasy, it was fun, but I can only spread myself so thin, I don’t have the will to memorize the systems and intricacies of another MMO ever again.
There are but they’re either in no power to do anything, or in useless positions that do not influence the gameplay. I’d say the problem is more their recent fixation on “Money first, fans second.” Which was evident after the Activision merger with Wrath when Blizzard began alienating the people who had already spent 5 years on the game basically being pushed to the side in favor of the ten year olds who saw comedians say they play WoW and also wanted to play it. As well as the bandwagoners who saw WoW was popular, no longer socially taboo and at the time was actually the cool thing to be playing. That came with a severe limiting on core values of the MMO genre and alienated the people who played the game for those reasons.
Blizzard threw away people who would play come Hell or highwater in favor of fairweather fans who wanted an MMO with the difficulty curve of a Facebook game like Farmville or Mafia Wars.
i’m anxiously awaiting classic tbc. gonna enjoy the heck outta that
I would like to believe that but… In WoD we also told we were getting relics for our classes or even in Shadowlands they said they were going to split the shoulder transmog but we have yet to see it.
I mean, the art and sound design is enough to distract me from how bad the game has become.
It’s less a game for me than it is a form of meditation. I play with the in game music on a loop, and my brain turns to jelly swirling with nostalgia.
Same here. I’m 27, I have been playing WoW since I was 10 during closed beta during Summer vacation between 4th and 5th grade. I just eventually realized WoW to me was no longer fun. I wasn’t excited to sprint home when school got out to just spend the day mindlessly pvping, or running dungeons which even if I realistically accomplished nothing, felt like an awesome day.
I still keep my sub going and mostly post from my alt account because my main is forum banned until 3020 because I got into too many arguments with a dwarf hunter with a penchant for flagging posts he disagrees with. Say something simple, he twists it, the second he can twist your response to a personal attack he will and just say you’re engaging in ad hominem. Say his logic is stupid, to him you called him stupid. I won’t name them here because of forum conduct but their name rhymes with "Spankin’ "
I hope not. I won’t rest until draenei get eye color options.
Ya, 29 here similar thing.
But I still think WoW is the most incredible form of nostalgia, its a great for just hypnotizing me into a trance where Azeroth takes precedent over Earth, which I really need in a state plagued by covid, wildfires, and riots.
Yeah, video games are a really good way of not having to constantly address the fact real life sucks, and it isn’t just this year that sucks, it’s just always sucked. It’s kind of why I viscerally attack people who try to bring their political agendas into gaming, I play video games to escape real life. The last thing I want to address is things going on in real life in what was initially my escape from it.
My hopes for Draenei will probably never happen, but I want red or grey skin so I can make an Eredar.
Ya I literally play on an RP server on retail when I don’t RP, hoping for a little bit of immersion.
Ya, no, politics 24/7 in trade chat. Even this thread has it, someone earlier thinking High Elves are some racist dogwhistle.
" Whoever fights monsters should see to it that in the process he does not become a monster. And if you gaze long enough into an abyss, the abyss will gaze back into you."
And yep, that was my exact problem with Wyrmrest Accord. To make matters doubly worse, if you so much as disagree with their political opinions, you basically can’t RP because they will blacklist you. I literally got guild kicked from a guild I was in for two years because the one time I responded to politics in trade chat basically saying “Can you shut up? Nobody cares about your flat earther tier economic theories.” and they basically told me on Discord the day after it was nothing personal but they worried if they didn’t remove me it would make it impossible for the people in their guild to find active RP opportunities with other players by association.
This is the RP equivalent of basically telling a business to fire an employee for their opinions that disagree with yours. It’s one thing to attack someone’s opinion or disagree, but the second you have to extend to third parties and attack their ability to function out of spite, you are a terrible person.
Not surprised though really. RP servers tend to have an overlap with tumblr and twitter users, so the same behavior is to be expected. It’s why if I ever decided to play Shadowlands by some miracle I’d go to a pvp server. Ideologues have ruined comic books for me, they’ve ruined gaming, now they’ve ruined RP for me.
I doubt they’ll give us red skin, but grey skin with green eyes would be nice. I made a thread about draenei customisation but it hasn’t gotten a lot of attention compared to the elf ones >_>
I reached the maximum amount of posts on a new character on my alt. But I can just change characters. None of these rules make sense when they are so easily circumented.
But from my experience on an Rp-pvp server, it’s the twitter tumblrinas you mentioned RPing, then the pvpers are the hyper aggressive alt right trolls. And they argue endlessly.
Reaching a max post amount is a huge reality check, but I’m half-superstitious about this thread being good luck, I’ve gotten the Antoran Charhound and The Living Infernal Core in the hours that I’ve been complaining. Time well wasted.
Yep, and it’s because of this I believe thoroughly that Horseshoe Theory is a real thing. The two lunatic fringes eventually argue for the same crap for different reasons and behave the exact same which is to say disgustingly inhuman. Even worse, they both have a “the ends justify the means” motive so good luck even trying to speak reason to them. They can be as terrible of people as they want so much as they feel they make the world their ideal place.
Maybe I’m biased because I have yet to see an alt-righter actually try to get me guild kicked or ruin my ability to play a game for disagreeing. At worst they just screech and I can ignore them by hiding my chat window.
Ya, anyone in the center gets labeled as far right or far left if they share any opinion at all.
Nuance is dead.
