I came back to WoW a few months ago and starting leveling my old characters to 60 which comprised mostly doing the story between dungeon runs. However, after starting this on my third character, I was told it was critical to finish the campaign for choosing a covenant and ton of other super valid reason. I’ve since been able to skip the campaign for any newly created characters, but for the ones I leveled to 60 before knowing this, can they also skip it? Everything I’ve read and seen implies NEXT and doesn’t apply to anything PREVIOUS. Is this true? If so, seems like a huge flaw.
Yes, you can effectively skip the entire Shadowlands leveling campaign by leveling to 60 before ever entering the Shadowlands.
At level 60, you can choose to go through the level 50 Maw Intro (…but why would you, you’re 60…) or skip it and head directly to Oribos.
Once in Oribos, you can choose to go through the storyline as normal (Again, why would you, you’re 60…), or engage in Threads of Fate mode, which will allow you to choose a covenant and start adventuring in the Shadowlands. (iirc, all the zone-based meta quests, like Aiding Ardenweald, Bolstering Bastion, etc., cannot be obtained at 60, so you do miss out on 5 easy renown points – one for each zone, plus Torghast.)
…do note that this assumes you have gotten at least one character through the entire shadowlands leveling campaign before. Prepare for disappointment if you leveled your first ever character from 50 to 60 exclusively through timewalking.
Threads of fate mode? Can you explain that more?
I’ve only seen the skip option for any new 60s. I’m saying I completed the campaign on my third character and was able to skip on my fourth. However, my first and second haven’t had that option. Hoping I just missed something though.
When you get to Oribos after completing (or skipping) the L50 Maw Intro, you get stopped by a Fatescribe that asks if you’d like to do the normal storyline or do Threads of Fate. If you decline to start Threads mode at that time, you’ll be on the normal Shadowlands leveling campaign – though you can join Threads of Fate mode at any time by talking to him again.
After the initial choice to join Threads mode is refused, Fatescribe Roh-Tahl (the guy you need to talk to for joining Threads of Fate mode) is on the far eastern ‘square’ of oribos, directly east of the inn.
I believe that if they’ve already passed the skip point option, then it will not be available to them. Someone can certainly correct me if I’m wrong, but I believe that’s how it currently works.
Yes. This matches my experience so far. Know if there’s any plans to fix this? A bit of pain point if I do say so.
Hrm… I do know that the initial choice to join Threads of Fate mode works even if you’re already L60 when you come out of the L50 Maw intro… [My L60 hunter on WrA is proof of that!]
Haven’t tested if you can turn Threads of Fate mode on by going to talk to Fatescribe Roh-Tahl east of the inn as a L60, though… but it should be possible.
If you’ve already skipped the intro you can select ToF or change your character to Threads of Fate from the storyline option at any time. You can’t do the opposite however. Unfortunately, I believe you can’t do it after level 59? I don’t know where I remember reading that.
That said, if you’re already 60, but haven’t chosen anything yet, I’m not sure what happens.
Look for Fatescribe Roh-Tahl in Oribos. The Fatescriber will be located in the Outer Ring, on the eastern end of Oribos. See if he will let you choose.
That was definitely the case for alts on day one of the expansion – I remember there being an uproar about it and I think it was changed at some point to allow you to join Threads of Fate mode, even if you’re at level 60 while in the middle of the Shadowlands leveling campaign.
EDIT: Upon finishing the Maw intro at L60 on another character, I arrived in Oribos and had the Fatescribe asking if I wanted to engage in Threads of Fate mode. After refusing, I immediately received the quest “Fate’s Reminder”, which points to Fatescribe Roh-Tahl for engaging in Threads of Fate mode. Additionally, after completing the Shadowlands leveling campaign up until being directed into Bastion, the option to join Threads of Fate mode was still there on Fatescribe Roh-Tahl.
Correction: After further play and following the comments of others, it seems Threads of Fate was only partially removed. It is only unavailable under the following conditions; starting Shadowlands content in Chromie Time or before level 60 (likely level 70 when TWW launches), level 60+ characters that started Shadowlands content before their main unlocked Threads of Fate, characters who were offered threads of fate but chose the storyline, or if the decision window is closed for any reason while being offered a choice it automatically defaults to storyline mode. The last condition mentioned is particularly bad as it can occur by no fault of the player due to disconnection, UI error, internet outage, power failure, etc…
There is a remnant of an option to switch from storyline mode to Threads of Fate. Characters who started storyline mode get a breadcrumb to talk to Fatescribe Roh-Tahl behind the inn in Oribos. However, the follow up offer to skip the remaining storyline up to choosing a covenant has been removed. Unfortunately, this being the only part of Threads of Fate actually removed creates a pitfall for new and returning players.
This is great news for my remaining alts, but awful for the characters I got locked into the introduction story before understanding and while testing the inadequately documented specifics of this partially unavailable feature.
Original comment
Original comment: For anyone stumbling onto this thread in the post-Shadowlands era, the ability to choose Threads of Fate was removed at the beginning of Dragonflight.
It is currently not possible to skip through the Shadowlands story even if you’ve already done it on another character. All characters that had not already enabled Threads of Fate before Dragonflight launched lost the chance to do so.
New alts still get the breadcrumb quest to visit Fatescribe Roh-Tahl, but the option to enable Threads of Fate is not offered after turning in this breadcrumb. As of this post this feature has not been replaced and there is currently no alternative… Threads of Fate was not brought into the Adventure Mode system, defeating the entire purpose of its former existence.
This is incorrect. I’ve done it 8 times between patches 10.1.5 and 10.2.5. Threads of fate did change with the launch of Dragonflight. You can no longer choose it at level 50 and use it to level (you have to get to 60 to use it, and all it does is skip the campaign now). If you hit 60 while levelling in Shadowlands, fly back to Oribos and talk to the threads NPC, you can choose it and instantly complete the campaign and choose a covenant. If you hit 60 before you go to Shadowlands, as soon as you enter Oribos the NPC will appear in front of you and offer it.
Again, I have done this 8 times in Dragonflight, and the last time was 6 days ago. It definitely wasn’t removed. You just can’t pick it at 50 anymore. It worked with my characters that were manually levelled. It worked with a 60 boost and a 70 boost.
Source: Cannot Start Threads of Fate
Edit: I should note that I personally just got the breadcrumb as a lvl 70 mage, but after I turned it in I was not offered the Threads of Fate. My level display on the forum is incorrect for some reason. If you’ve been able to do it 8 times in recent patches I would be very interested in the exact steps you performed to use a feature that has been officially disabled for anyone who hasn’t done it yet.
Well, that’s wrong. The only change that was made was making it unavailable until 60. I can prove it because I’ve done it 8 times during Dragonflight and so have many others.
We don’t really need to jump into a year old thread just to toss in info that’s already out there. Not sure why this is needed.
This is one of the characters that I used the threads of fate skip on very recently (as in since 10.2.5 launch). It works. You can check my achievements and see that I gained everything at once and have a covenant.
How, exact steps. Because when I follow the breadcrumb I get nothing.
Ok, first you have to reach level 60. What you do next depends on whether you started Shadowlands or not. If you started Shadowlands, all you have to do is fly back to Oribos and talk to Fatescribe Roh-Tahl. He’ll be hanging out all the way in the back of the room that has the innkeeper. There will not be a quest, you just talk to him, he will offer the threads of fate option, and if you select that it will do the campaign skip and send you to select a covenant. If you do NOT pick this, and pick that you want to do the normal story, there is no way to un-do it and you will have to complete the campaign.
If you hit 60 without ever going to Shadowlands at all, the moment you enter Oribos, he will turn the screen grey, and offer you the option there. Once again you only have this one opportunity to select it.
This is, of course, assuming that you have completed the Shadowlands campaign in its entirety before. It’s possible you had to do this during Shadowlands. I did so I’m not sure what happens if you complete the campaign for the first time now.
As I said I’ve done this on 8 characters between 10.1.5 and 10.2.5. I have a total of 10 characters >60, but two of them finished the campaign during Shadowlands itself so I didn’t count those.
Check my profile, I am lvl 70. The forum display is out of date. I got a breadcrumb quest to talk to Fatescribe Roh-Tahl about the Threads of Fate. I turned it in. Then nothing. No grey screen, no offer to enable Threads of Fate.
Opening a ticket would be futile because there is literally a support article stating the feature has been removed for anyone who didn’t use it before Dragonflight. Glad you’re lucky enough to have some mysterious way around that, but it doesn’t work for me.
I don’t remember a breadcrumb to talk to him except during Shadowlands. Did you ever complete the campaign during Shadowlands itself?
I didn’t play during Shadowlands so no, I did not do it when it was “live”.
