Should Warcraft 2 Remaster retcon the story?

Or should it remain exactly as is? I mean unlike say trying to retcon Warcraft 3, Warcraft 2 would be infinitely easier to retcon/try to make it closer to modern WoW’s telling of the events considering it would be Metzen just reading a new set of mission briefings.

This will likely be the first time alot of people will end up playing Warcraft 2 and I dont feel like correcting people by going “no Lothar wasnt actually killed in a parley attempt with the orcs according to current lore”.

From my current understanding, Warcraft 2 Remaster is getting the SC1 treatment: Same everything, but the graphics are HDified.

That being said, I don’t particularly care either way.

Hence why I mentioned Warcraft 2 would be infinitely easier to retcon because any retcon to say Starcraft would potentially have some ingame changes. A retcon to 2, only requires Metzen to redo the mission briefing line.

Should it? Good question.

Were Blizzard to add an optional, ‘Story Campaign,’ which focuses on canon events, then I think that’d be a great addition, allowing them to update old lore to be more cohesive with what we have today. By leaving the Alliance and Horde campaigns untouched, players can also enjoy the original experience.

I doubt Blizzard would add a new campaign though.

They don’t even have to add a new campaign per say and just change the mission briefings to be more inline with current events.

They could, yes. Honestly, given the original WC2 is already available, I suppose there isn’t much reason not to.

On the question of what they should do:
IMO, there are two acceptable options:

  1. No change what-so-ever. Everything is just as it was, only with better graphics and function update.
  2. Largely left alone, with only some slight additions/changes based on what we already know.

Changes in line with additional information we already know about the events is something that wouldn’t really hurt anything. But there should not be any new lore revelations in the game. They should stay away from anything that even hints at rewriting the history.

I am sure that depends on the “Retcon”

Having the Jailer show up and saying “things are going exactly as I planned” would probably not be a good retcon, even if it solidifies the current lore.

Honestly it would be interesting to see if Blizzard does go down this route. Since there already is a fan-made WC2 orc campaign remake that uses the WC3 reforged engine. Could compare what changes the guys who developed “Chronicles of the second war” made vs the ones Blizzard makes. At least in relation to the orc campaign. As nearly everything in that campaign is canon (in some shape or form) except the final few missions (basically everything up to and including the Tomb of Sargeras mission).

But I have a feeling that it will be like SC1 remaster. Mostly just a graphic and quality of life updates.

They kind of need to. Zul’Aman for example in WC2 was about where Scholomance is in WoW.

Well this is relatively easy to fix considering they will likely make a new map for the remaster.

Never played Warcraft 2, however I am not sure what they could retcon other than minor things. In Warcraft 3 Reforged, they added some bosses from the Culling of Stratholme to the Stratholme level in that game. We’ll probably get the same sort of things.

WC2 is what I remember from warcraft as a kid. my friend had it and the expansion was super hard, he got owned by the orcs every time. I remember how awesome the orcs were they kept zugging his base in the first few mins.
I tried to pirate it once but it didnt look right in 4k lol

For that alone I would prefer an updated lore accurate Warcraft 2.

I thought Lothar being killed by Doomhammer was pretty common knowledge by now.

It’s what causes Turalyon to rally the alliance and defeat the horde at the base of Blackrock Mountain

It should be, but I once saw a Kul’Tiran poster arguing that Lothar was ambushed via parlay and cited War2 as his source.

IIRC, as of Chronicles II Lothar’s death is up for in-universe debate; some believe he was ambushed, others believe he was killed fairly by Doomhammer. All evidence currently points to the latter, though.

Wait, what? So you’re telling me after all these years that me putting that invincibility cheatcode in before he got got is now canon?

Lothar got his skull caved in with the Doomhammer(the weapon). :dracthyr_nod:

If that’s the case, I’m already disappointed…
I would have preferred the graphics of Warcraft 3 Reforged!
