Should Warcraft 2 Remaster retcon the story?

Need to keep the scope of the project in mind. If they’re aiming to release an updated graphical version of an old title, rewriting the story should be off the table. Preserving a game as a historic piece seems more important than using said game as a storytelling correction for WoW.

Nope, Chronicles 2 specifically mentions Ogrim killed Lothar in one on one combat.

Weakened by losses caused by Gul’dan’s treachery, Doomhammer was forced to fall back from the human capital of Lordaeron to his fortress at Blackrock Spire There he fought the final battle of the Second War against the Alliance of Lordaeron leading a charge from Blackrock Spire to clash with Anduin Lothar]and his paladin guard. Human and orc battled one another in a titanic conflict that left both warriors drained, but the Warchief was able to vanquish the Regent of Azeroth. Some believe that Doomhammer did not win fairly and that Lothar was killed after being ambushed by Horde warriors.

No retcons. It’ll just be used to make the alliance perfect and the horde vapidly evil.

I mean, the horde was already pretty evil in WC 2. Nothing to retcon on that front

It had moments of morally grey decision making. Doomhammer didn’t siege storm wind for the lols.

Think I’ll stick with the mod. Bit rough around the edges but it’s got a lot of genuine passion in it.

One thing I liked about their quote-unquote remaster of III was the working in of lore characters at appropriate points, like Anasterian and Dawnseeker at the Sunwell and Nazgrel at Hyjal. More of that would be welcome.

Only thing is making the Orgrim vs Lothar fight have a definitive outcome
Make it a cinematic?

Warcraft 3 drastically changing really made little sense to me because, despite what blizzard said, Warcraft 3 as it was originally still almost entirely lined up with modern lore. The only things I can think of that changed was Arthas having a battle against Kael’thas’s father and Kael himself having the flame strike sword(name eludes me atm) and having a 1v1 duel with Arthas.

Other than that, the games events are all still canon as they were in lore. I could see maybe expanding some things like the the fights mentioned above, the old god appearance through azjol’nerub, or just generally giving Sylvanas a bit more focus, but they talked about drastically changing things, which didn’t make sense to me.

Warcraft 2, on the other hand was to my understanding less “drastically changed” by the novelizations and more just drastically expanded upon. What would they have to undo from the original version? Seems to me that the changes would mostly be additive in nature.

if they ever did WC1, that would be the one they’d have to completely change to make fit.

I believe it was more changing certain mission maps and certain scripted events or objectives in those maps to line up with some pieces of lore that got changed.

Such as Arthas making an ice bridge to each the Sunwell as described in the Rise of the Lich King novel. In the original map for RoC Scourge: Mission 5, the Sunwell is in Silvermoon City when it was on an island in the distance. As shown in TBC and even in the WC3 manual.

http://ftp.blizzard.com/pub/misc/Warcraft%20III%20Manual.pdf (go to page 67-68)

Other maps that got changed included any that involved Dalaran or Stratholme.

But at some point during development they stopped that. Which is why Scourge mission 4 is kinda funny still. Imagine being goblins and the undead show up wanting to BUY some zepplins…

I like the change the Arthas novel made by making it that the scourge build corpse bridges instead.

Well iirc they did decide to walk back drastic changes cause of fan outcry

Yeah, but I was wondering what they had planned to change considering WC3 didn’t need to change much to line up with lore.

Maybe throw in references to the jailer so they could really say he was there all along

What changed in reforged?

Well you can buy Warcraft 1 and 2 Remastered right now, so go check.

Atleast there’s always Chronicles of the Second War Team that expanded the lore story of Warcraft 2. Not sure what I could say about Blizzard’s attempt at a remaster for Warcraft 2.

I still headcannon all the lore from wc2. Lothar died in an ambush as I remember it. And that’s how it is

They already retconned Warcraft 2 lore a long time ago, I have a feeling they are going to change things to make that retconned lore fit easily and to not confuse people.

no long cutscenes and tutorials just the warlord wants you to kill and heres whats going on then you get to play

you guys really want a bunch of blah blah added to this?
