Should PvP have talent trees?

I think it’d be a major improvement if PvP had some sort of actual talent trees, maybe not as complex as class and spec trees, but more complex than the current pick three system where you take two to make your spec function, and the third is sort of optional. So really what we currently have is a pick one system.

What do you think?

Give an example. The devil is entirely in the details.

Sure. I think three points just isn’t enough because often a point or two are auto-locked. Sub for example will almost always take Smoke Bomb and Duel, which leaves a single point as an actual choice. The current system mostly serves to keep certain abilities out of PvE, which is fine, but then it falls short of offering a few interesting choices.

I can’t tell you for sure that a talent tree would be a major improvement because it’d be up to the devs to design a good system. Perhaps it could have some mandatory nodes that each class / spec has to take (the mandatory talents we take now), while other nodes could be added like do you want [insert ability] to work like this or like that? I’m thinking something on the scale of hero trees.

But I’m not a dev and really I just want to float the general idea.

I’m sure some specs have more freedom than others, god bless them, but take warrior for example: both Arms and Fury are locked into Battlefield Commander and their respective MS talents. Take Ret with Aura of Reckoning and Sanctuary. I don’t think Shadow has much leeway with PvP talents. The list of mandatory PvP talents is long.

Depends. I like the idea of having more choice/customization in pvp fs. I also do not like the current pvp talent system at all.

If I could choose more than 3 of the existing pvp talents at a time, I would have fun with that on all specs I play.

I think it’s a really cool idea in theory, but I already think there’s a ton of current class complexity AND button bloat. Yeah, it would feel cool if when I played shadow priest I had psyfiend and void volley and greater fade and driven to madness and mind trauma and thoughtsteal… but then I’d play into a dh with two self dispels, glimpse, demon souls, fly, big cage. Or a lock with master summoner, reflect, impish instincts, long gate, observer, fel lord, etc…

I think it would make things more frustrating by adding a million more things to counterplay around than give classes cool new things. Also, I think there’s something to be said for having to choose the pvp talents you’ll use.

Yea, I get what you’re saying, we probably shouldn’t get all of our current PvP talents. Rather the size of a PvP talent tree could be the size of hero trees, or even smaller, and we’d only get a couple of our currently mandatory talents for free. I’d rather not develop the idea beyond that. It’s best to keep it general.

I think another pvp “hero talent” could be SUPER neat. I’d need to see it in action, though, and probably more passive abilities than active ones.
