Should I Try and Place First?

Some call it placing, some call it ranking…
Whatever you call it, should I “go do ranked arena solo until it places me in a bracket”?
I am genuinely interested in doing PvP in a serious way for the first time since like Legion? I did some serious stuff for the last season or two of Shadowlands pvp.
But on any character, I have always been more of a solo BG player. I used to try and keep a head in my bag for longer than an hour LOL. My hunter got Grand Marshal back when.
I am not inexperienced, is what I am saying.
I just haven’t been going hard in a long time.

So I need a partner who is probably in the like 1200ish range.
If you look at me and don’t see pvp gear, that just because its my pve set lol.
If you see my pvp gear, its likely accurate.
Conquest Gear:
Head
Shoulders
Chest
Gloves
Ring 1
Crafted Lariat, Haste/Vers with pvp enhance for 450 ilvl.
450 Crafted Shadowflame Belt.
450 Crafted Pants
Cloak, Bracers, Boots, Ring 2, Trinkets 1&2, and the weapon are all honour gear atm.
Ive been doing my best to keep up with the weekly pvp quests, I am currently capped on honour because I am just farming out my Conquest gear for the other slots, focusing on the set slots and weapon.

I have been known to “make plays” in my day LOL but don’t expect the best mage ever.
This is the early stages of me kicking butt.

I am looking for any advice or tips. I know items I am going for, but help is always good in all the other areas.

Edit I am currently farming out the Random Epic BG’s. The past few weeks I basically can’t lose them, so I have been grinding them. Reasoning? Everybody in arena is mostly maxed out in gear. I have won 2/30 arena matches for a total of like an hour and a half spent losing and only got 50 conquest.
I do ONE epic bg, takes me like 2 minutes of queue time and maybe 10 minutes of playtime, depending. NEver more than 15.
I get 1200ish honour and anywhere between 35-65 conquest for each victory, which is basically all of them at the moment.
So, again at the moment, its a billion times more efficient for me to farm epic bgs for almost tripple the conquest, as opposed to just getting creamed in arena against waaaaay too geared of opponenents lol. The gains are virtually nil.
So for now, just farming epic bgs lol.

to answer your question, only play solo shuffle if you are confident in your ability to play at the skill level you need to, to reach whatever your goal is. because you’re going to get smoked with the gear you’re in, and definitely lose rounds because of it.

you’re missing about 6k worth of conquest, and less experienced healers will let you flop as mage unless you play really well.

once you lose a couple shuffles at low rating your mmr will be hard stuck in the gulags until you carry yourself out. you will get 0 conquest for lobbies gone below 3-3.

You should get some of the bloody token gear and upgrade it with the weekly world PvP tokens. Those pop 'em up to 447, so it can help fill slots while you gather conquest!
