Sharding alternatives

That is a good reason. A good reason but a system with numerous downsides.

The pros don’t outweigh the negatives.

Sharding fragments the community.
Sharding makes zones feel more empty.
Sharding increases the resources generated by a server.

Then the only other solution I can give is “Don’t do the Gates event.”

Or how about getting better tech.

My server handled bc launch with hundreds of people all in a small area. All Pvping

Only a small amount of lag

You can’t have the gameplay ecperiernce if everyone around you is shared into oblivion, either.

We get it.

You favor convenience above all else with your retail mindset.

Some of us actually favor community and a truer classic experience over convenience. I know that is difficult for a retail mindset to grasp and understand, though.

Billion dollar company =/= having the werewithal to spend gobs of money on tech for one small project.

And yet a private server managed to handle it.
Some Russians could do it but blizzard can’t afford tech to make an mmo feel like an mmo?

Did they really, though?

Did you see the Shut down event?

You mean that video someone posted of it? Looked pretty friggin’ laggy to me.

And yet all online. And that was some server in a basement. Not something run by a company with hordes of cash.

Well, good thing “into oblivion” is just you being hyperbolic then, isn’t it!

Honestly when it comes to the AQ gate opening, they should just let it happen.

The server might have some issues but it’s a one off event. It’s not like we get together once a month to re-open the gates.

Plus regardless of what they do some people will lag, because their computers wont be able to handle all that going on at once.

I’m sorry, but I just can’t support forcing people to miss the event even though they showed up for it. I can’t.

Tell me laeric, how are we supposed to know when the gong is struck if the zone is sharded?

Call me odd, but I’d rather be lagging out in a jaw dropping mass of players than playing freely in an event I know is sliced and diced up by the server. That way it’d feel like an actual major event, rather than …not.

And yet sharding would cause that anyway. How do we know when the gong is struck if were all in different shards?

Well, presumably the gong’s sound effect will be heard and you’ll see the gates opening.

People aren’t going to miss the event.

Some people just might lag because they’re running on a toaster that can’t handle 200+ people in a single area with a good number of them all firing off spell effects like people do when you get large groups.

Lag isn’t the same as being kicked off the server or the server crashing, though.

Being kicked off the server and server crashing is exactly what happened during the original AQ event.

  1. your presuming they will and can do this
  2. if your advocating for them to make such a change, why not just advocate for temporary back end changes to handle the load
