Hiyya,
So back in the day I mained a Hunter, Pally and a priest, I had a ball healing through raids all the way through to wrath of the lich king before life got in the way.
I’m stoked that classic is coming and I’m thinking of playing something similar but different. I’m thinking I’d like to roll a Troll Shaman ( as Trolls are the master race) but I’ve got this vague memory though that Shammies had real issues solo healing through 5 man dungeons.
Anyone able to jog my memory? Were shammies useless at 5man healing or just the Shammies I was playing with?

I main a shaman on a certain server right now, and I had zero troubles healing all the way to 60, it was a nice change as well. I think you should definitely do it.
Cheers, man good to know. Any healer tips?
use downranked spells to save mana. carry mana potions just in case. always have water to drink. let the tank build some threat before you start healing or he’ll have to chase after you to get the mob you aggrod
Shamans have:
A quick heal (Lesser healing wave)
A big heal (Healing wave)
A multi-target/aoe heal (Chain heal)
A heal over time… sort of… (Healing stream totem)
All the tools you need to heal effectively. You’ve also got mana tide/mana spring for helping out your sustain and possibly that of your team depending on group composition, though you’ll have to drink as much as any other healer. You have an advantage over pally/priest/druid healers in that if there is a wipe, you can reincarnate and revive the rest of the group to avoid the graveyard run.
You’ll also have plenty of group support to use while healing: Strength of earth/grace of air totems to boost dps stats, windfury totem if you’re running with several melee dps, tremor totem to deal with fear/sleep effects from enemies in certain dungeons, grounding totem to soak up spells, etc. Shamans are pretty good all around.

Same, and healing 5-mans is fun. Shammies are like Batman. You heal very well. But you also have this huge collection of totems and spells for buffs and situational utility that everyone appreciates.

If my memory serves ( big “if”) then I got more use out of mana stream totem near me than I did healing stream totem near the tank.
Shaman are one of the best 5 man healers. They even come with built-in wipe recovery. They only lack a defensive magic dispel, which can be a pain at times. With totems, they bring the highest dps boost to groups which makes them very desired. However, you can’t recall totems which means you will have to place new totems in order to prevent aggroing mobs.
As for tips… find any mp5 gear you can. mp5 is pretty much all you need.
Lots of cheap int leather out there. As long as you have an int set and know how to use raid frames to help you decide who to heal and what to dispel or tremor totem you are fine. You can also help kite if something goes wrong.
Shamans are sick healers dude. Wicked group buffs, self rez and lots of other great utility. Extremely fun and varied class too. Their resto tree is solid and allows them to be great healers for dungeons and raids. Making me want to roll one for classic now…
Agreed. Shamans are great fun. Utility out the *** – you often have too many options at any given time between healing, totem management, dps, shock interrupt/grounding totem along with playing for position to AoE with fire totems, AoE stun with Warstomp, Tremor totem reaching everyone… purge is pretty key too. Earthbind kite for when things get sketchy - or just to slow mobs fleeing on low life.
Seldom is there a situation where a Shaman’s only contribution is healing.
Holy dooley that brings me back
I healed all the 60 dungeons up to and including UBRS using a 30/21 enhance/resto spec without issue. Just put on some appropriate gear and it’s no problem. It wasn’t even a good spec it was just the standard pvp enhance/resto spec. Really you just need mana. It’s okay to swipe some cloth gear if you ask first while leveling. Even at 60 just ask “You need this?” Lots of people will allow you to grab the appropriate gear.
Please forgive my ignorance, but can Shamans who raid heal and do melee DPS?
Nah, if you’re going to chain heal, then…you chain heal. You stack a lot of +healing and hand out rank 1 chain heals for the entire raid unless you see a situation that needs a different response. Shaman aren’t particularly good at being hybrids in raids. If you’re a healer you best heal. Just drop some totems.
