Shaman are fine solo dungeon healers, it’s all good. If you want to heal 5 mans as a shaman go for it. You even get the wipe protection of reincarnation if something goes wrong.
Shouldn’t ever have any problems. Here are some tips for leveling shaman healing.
Shaman have the best fast-healing spell in the game. Lesser Healing Wave is more efficient and more powerful than Flash Heal or Flash of Light. It is your workhorse. Someone needs healing? Lesser Healing Wave.
Healing Wave is for when you have time to sit back and think “I’ll get around to it”. It is more efficient than Lesser Healing Wave (but not to the same degree as for other classes). If someone needs healing, but it’s not urgent, Healing Wave.
You don’t get Chain Heal until your 40’s. It’s not a particularly amazing dungeon healing spell anyway. Most dungeon groups are unlikely to need 3 targets healed at a time who are all close enough together for Chain Heal.
Healing Stream Totem is usually less effective than Mana Spring Totem. However, if you’re already having no problems with mana, go with Healing Stream.
You shouldn’t downrank significantly while leveling. Downranking is an endgame technique that relies on having a significant amount of +healing gear to make the lower-rank spells more efficient than the higher-rank spells. Without the +healing, the highest rank is already the most efficient.
If no one needs any healing, and your totems are down, then go melee. Doing damage from range costs mana. Melee is free.
Biggest advice I can give you at low levels is to stay up on your totems. Many a shaman back then severely hamstrung themselves by not having their totem quests complete before they were looking for dungeon groups.
Shamans are amazing 5 man healers. Chain heal works just great when you need it, since pulls can be quick u don’t need the super long mana efficiency. Downranking lesser and healing wave to prevent overhealing—and TOTEMS. Man, totems are so good. Windfury, cleansing, stone skin—these are so good for dungeon clearing. Really great. You shouldn’t have any problem at all. If any healer has issues it would be a Druid-lacking in utility options, no Rez—and they manage just fine. You’ll do great
Gonna correct a few misconceptions:
What is correct though is you bring a ton of utility and you’ll be absolutely fine. Shaman is by and far the most desired healer on horde side. Your only weakness in healing is that you have no instant heals outside of your nature’s swiftness
I wouldn’t describe it as “insanely inefficient”. It’s certainly less efficient than Healing Wave (at level 20, 1.66 HPM instead of the 1.88 of HW; or 2.3 LHW vs 2.6 HW/2.8 with tome at level 60), but it provides the burst healing power that you need and dungeons shouldn’t require you to spam it beyond your means.
In Vanilla, I healed all the leveling dungeons with Lesser Healing Wave as my workhorse spell, because less time spent healing means more time meleeing and regenerating.
If you don’t have +healing gear high rank spells are more efficient. Needed to mention this for levelers.
your memory sucks.
shaman are excellent 5 man healers.
have a nice day.
that depends, too though. if you’re at 80% health and you use a max rank heal spell and overheal, then it would still be more efficient to use a lesser ranked spell. even when solo leveling i have all different ranks of spells keybound
It’s really that the more +heal you stack the worse it is, because it doesn’t benefit nearly as much as healing wave or chain heal, and it’s still expensive. It has uses in a quick spam on someone who pulls aggro, or the random fire damage during lava packs in MC that nearly one shot people where healing wave’s too slow, someone getting eye beamed on cthun, or like coming out of the web phase on Maexxna in naxx. You can’t sustain it of course but saving someone more important than being oom
This is absolutely correct in the context of end-game raiding with high amounts of +healing gear.
But I was talking about leveling
Maybe if you were at the end of a fight or you have an undergeared and under leveled tank that you have to keep topped off. While fighting, less casts means more chances of going beyond the FSR.
Even then it’s not all too much worse. Plus, it’s much better than priests’ Flash Heal.
You’ll be fine. Just remember during levelling to collect a secondary set of “healing gear” which you can change into, that way you should be able to heal most levelling dungeons without being resto.
use stoneskin totem for tank. I’ts ridiculously strong, especially in early levels.
Having a set of gear with int/spirit for healing dungeons and a set with str for soloing makes life a little easier.
