Pretty sure the totem itself gains the threat.
Level 42 shaman here. I’ve tanked all of the dunegons up through sm. It’s very effective on like 3 enimies, but as the pulls get larger it becomes hard to hold agro. Thats because your main agro is earth shock and the cd is kinda long.
Most of the time i try to run the dungeons a couple of times before, and i try to be the same level or above level.
Feedback from healers has always been positive. Most of the time healers say i hold agro better than other tanks, especially early on.
Hey! For anyone actually serious about trying it out, it does work! However, as you can tell, it isn’t for everyone. At max level, you need a dung load of gold and time on your hands, the consumables are a pain in the butt to farm and so are some of the enchants. Check out Caperfin’s guide, just google it and it will come up. I’ve been raid tanking (OT of course) in MC pugs going on 3 weeks while my guild continues to fill out a roster for 40man. It is more than doable, I’m in pre-raid gear only and have over 4k HP with close to 7k armor, near 20% dodge unbuffed, ~13% block, ~6% parry, all unbuffed. It’s been a lot of fun and the recognition from the community is really nice. Takes a lot of skill, both class knowledge and fight mechanics as well. Totally worth it. Check me out @ Nekro#1506 or on Fairbanks-PvP my name is Zamkabob. Good luck all! Have fun!
Stop being a snowflake.
Just be a warrior smh
You can tank raids on shaman but you really need a ton of healers & consumables plus be overgeared
It’s really not that big of a deal, unless you’re tanking a skull level target. The potion for +2000 armor for 2 minutes doesn’t even cost a gold. With that you’re looking at upwards of 9k+ armor fully buffed, once you get rolling you’re looking at over 10k armor which is close to 65% armor reduction. It’s easy lol. Just gotta know how
Done a full LBRS clear recently that had a shaman tank. Had no aggro issues, just had to mana to full before each pull.
^^^exactly, mana is really the only limitation for dungeons! If you get a good mp5/spirit set you can equip it when running between pulls and marking and you can get it down to mana breaks every 2 to 3 pulls. Happy hunting!
It’s been HEAVILY calculated to take about 1-2 weeks after a raid has been released for a shaman to get adequately geared (includes learning boss strats, consumes, etc…) I don’t see this as a long time considering most people won’t even have cleared half the raid by then.
For all the haters saying shaman raid tanking cannot be done, here are the logs from a full MC clear I tanked as a PUG tonight in pre-raid Bis. Picked up 1 piece along the way, and one piece off rag at the end.

If you don’t know how to sort for tanking here are some tips. If you sort by threat, you can see what mob specifically I was tanking and for how long/percentage of the fight I tanked it for. You can also sort by damage taken, tanks are usually the highest in the raid, and boom, there I am. You can also sort the logs by item score, and see that I am pretty much at rock bottom, as I said, I was in pre-raid Bis.
Enough of this “shaman can’t tank” bs. You’ve been proven wrong. If you don’t believe I was in pre-raid Bis, make a lvl 1 on Fairbanks-PvP and come inspect me. Otherwise, have a nice day
Your raid logs say you didnt tank a single boss.
You tank a trash mob here and there…
What in the world is that supposed to prove? Practically anything not wearing cloth can tank a trash mob while its focused down asap by the raid.
I tank mobs for over a minute and sometimes close to 2, that’s definitely not tanking a mob being focused down by the raid. During raid boss encounters I tank the off targets, much like a druid, it proves shaman can OT in a raid. Therefor, raid tank. Of course i don’t tank skull level mobs in dungeon blues lmao
Check out Golemagg. I tank the same mob as the druid tank, for the same amount of time. I took 16k less damage, and mitigated 10% more damage. Game Over. You lose.
Oh, off tank … big deal.
Pure dps warrior can offtank, resto spec druid can off tank, hell paladin is horrible and can off tank.
Who cares about off tanks? Anyone can off tank practically in the current raids.
There are literally hundreds of comments, if you scroll up, saying that shaman can’t do so. Are you late to the thread or something? Read up sonny. And no, not everyone can OT in current raids in dungeon blues, and as I said in a previous comment, I mitigated more damage than the tank spec feral OT, and I generate more pure threat too, without them constantly taunting off of me and resetting their threat equal to mine, I’d have a lot more uptime tanking. You’re just wrong, get over it.
I’ve tanked all of MC as a main-tank shaman and so have many other people. You can drop by the shaman tank discord to learn more or check out shaman tanking MC on youtube, some of the videos are not in English though If you’re more of a textual person, there’s a few shaman tank guides online.
That is very impressive considering you’re in pre-raid and new to the whole world of shaman tanking.
Why would you even post this? You are not the person I replied to.
If you find a group willing to do extra to make it work it wil.
Or the group could get an actual tank and save money on water and wipes from resists misses and immune.
Your fine until 40s.
I had one tank Zf. Was best run ever. Cl to es holds agro great. I just think the gear sucks bad for a shaman tank. Paladins even get a tank set. I dont think there is any def for a shaman at 60. You probably kite tank great but on bosses at 60 you cant tank it they cant be kited and hit hard.
What gear are you running. I love to give it a try. I tried back in vanilla and gave up but i didnt have 15 years of knowledge to help figure it out.
