Shaman Tanks

Why aren’t there more shaman tanks at later levels. I only see them up to about SM or so. Why is that?

Because shamans aren’t tanks?

Shamans lack the proper talents and abilities to be good tanks at later levels when content becomes more difficult.

Shaman tanking was only ever intended in classic to fill in for normal dungeon groups. After that, it was effectively dropped from the class. This would prove to be a mistake however because crusade had a horrible tank tank shortage for its entire life. It would have been far less awful with more effective tank classes. But this, along with improving existing tanks, would take until wrath to do. Going through classic/crusade with those tank shortages and no LFD… makes me glad we’re finally in wrath where my DK can tank my own heroics.

Because they aren’t tanks

No taunt no tank.

Let’s see…

  • Low Armor
  • No passive damage reduction
  • No gear with tank stats
  • Low avoidance
  • Low threat
  • No taunt

Their parry talent literally reduces their threat by 30%.

This is all good information. I was just curious why specifically it seems to drop off at SM. Once in a while I see an uldaman shaman tank but it’s rare. ST and beyond never see it.

For a shaman to tank they must outgear and outlevel the instance.

Because they’ll slow down the group, plain and simple.

Because shaman tanking is a meme and it’s usefulness is basically 0 past SM range.

Shams tank SM to gatekeep the mail drops from other classes. thats it
they just inv all casters or non mail chars

I had a shaman tank bail us out of LBRS and tanked the last boss for us thus saving the dungeon run.

It does happen.

We never claimed we were going replace the plates.

Why you plates get upset every time we bring it up and feel the need to diminish why we sometimes have to do your job for you always gives me the jollies.

P.S. In classic’s LBRS, not the watered-down versions you do now or did in BC.

Even transformed loks can tank to a point.

I had one tank a quest boss out in Northrend. I know it’s not a dungeon or raid boss but a lok did a job that a plate is supposed to normally do.

So what?

This, this, this, it’s so obvious that they’re not intended to tank. It can sort of, kind of be made to work in leveling dungeons, but it’s always going to be way worse than a real tank.

Imagine being this upset about shaman tanks.

They simply aren’t the best option. Generally the tank preference goes

Prot Pally > DK > Bear > Shaman > Prot Warr

Not to diminish your overall point, but shamans do have passive damage reduction and access to gear with tank stats. Their low threat relative to other tanks is also solved by things like tricks of the trade and misdirect. Their disadvantages obviously make them a meme, but they are definitely capable. They could easily serve as an offtank in current content if a raid was in a tight spot with no immediate alternatives.

Most of the mobs in sunken temple are immune to nature. And the enemies in dungeons after that level are a little more difficult, requiring more specific gear itemization. That’s why you stop seeing them at that point.
