If there were a “single point of failure” like you suggest, mitigation would be impossible. The fact that mitigation happens disproves your assertion.
Downtime is a part of ALL MMORPG’s. Always has been. Always will be. There is a massive back end with a lot of hardware. Hardware needs maintenance even when the game is running perfectly. It has nothing to do with “tech debt”.
I hope you aren’t in charge of anything important, because you clearly don’t know as much as you think you do.

It is 20+ year old code, so yeah there are tech debts. However the game is usually down for an hour most Tuesdays, or just rolling restarts. It is down longer when they need to do more work with it. There are plenty of live services that don’t require a CDN that can achieve 5 9’s.
You’re just spouting nonsense now. No game in the universe is 5 9’s. Nothing entertainment related is 5 9’s, NO leisure activity is that important, and more importantly no game or entertainment company is paying for 5 9’s. 5 9’s is things like banks and critical infrastructure. Unless said “live service” is a nuclear reactor control system.

We could argue about a game being attacked by jerks, or we could just go play seeing as the mitigation techniques worked and things seem ok for now.
If you have a foolproof solution that stops DDOS attacks in their tracks and prevents them forever you should market that. You would be insanely rich. These kinds of attacks are common, basic, and a scourge of all online services/sites. At least the ones that attract any level of attention or happen to be in the way to a better target.
