Servers dead... again

TY wow for putting our money to good use and giving us crappy servers all the time

Looks like this is being confirmed as a DDOS. We are working to mitigate the attack.

I’m sure if they charged us a monthly subscription fee they could get better servers
 right?

It does appear to be a DDOS.

We tend not to just jump to that conclusion until we receive confirmation from those looking into it.

Has nothing to do with the quality of the servers.

That is certainly the goal. Looks like this is hitting multiple titles, we are working on getting mitigation in place.

Do you know what a DDOS attack is? I am thinking you don’t. Even with the best mitigation there is no 100% defense. It is the equivalent of having millions of computers all try to log in at once and flood the servers causing them to be unable to handle data requests. They are done by malicious actors using infected computers and devices as a bot network to attack targets.

These attacks used to last hours, but usually Blizz has it back up within 30 mins to an hour. Not even billion dollar companies can stop full on DDOS attacks though if someone is serious. There is a reason that attacking websites and services like that is illegal.

Ty for the confirmation. Too bad law enforcement does not do more about this sort of thing. I would wager the attackers are out of the reach of US law :rage:

I know I’m preaching to the choir, but I wish things like this would land people 20+ year prison sentences when they were caught.

Appreciate the transparency and communication, and hope you and the team know we appreciate the work to keep the servers up.

Also like who did wow hurt to do this

edit – I’m back online!

My latency is completely back to normal, so I guess mitigation was succesful.

Back to finishing my weekly delves.

Come on man, be better.

It doesn’t matter how much a target scales with the amount of nodes some of these hacker groups are leveraging. Considering the average player of this game probably clicks on adult content as much as they do in-game abilities; if you told me that the players of the game themselves have allowed their machines to be a source node for the DDoS attacks, I’d expect it.

I feel like you have unaddressed tech debt with some single point of failure that you’ve allowed to exist until its a problem. It’s a problem.

Things look to have recovered, but now re-summoning and even resetting the delve has not changed my new inability to target Brann with my spells.

Edit: I had to re-log to fix the problem.

Can we get people to take down the online articles that say that Elon Musk likes Warcraft?

Maybe arson isn’t enough for some of the unhinged people who are firebombing Teslas, so maybe they are turning to poo-pooing ANYTHING ever mentioned with his name, including World of Warcraft
 Maybe not, but then again
 maybe?

I feel like you have no idea what a DDOS attack it. It is the same as if a million people called your phone at once and nobody could get through. Then they kept it up for hours. There are things they can do to mitigate it once it starts, but they can’t prevent it any more than you can prevent someone from doing that to your phone or your IP address.

I doubt he even knows how to turn on a computer, and I doubt he even knows what Warcraft is, that’s the funny thing.

I’m a principal cloud software engineer. I have many distributed web services, but I know what single points of failure, like you are describing are.

This game has downtime for hours every tuesday. You can think of any other game but struggle to imagine that. They have tech debt.

He does. There are confirmed Youtube videos of him playing.
