We received word last night that they would be doing maintenance this morning. So, we went ahead and posted the originally scheduled time as usual.
This morning, during maintenance, a crash was identified that was preventing realms from coming back online. The WOW team asked that we communicate an extension for maintenance so they could identify and fix the crash.
Apologies for the short notice on that extension update. It came towards the end of the scheduled maintenance when the crash was found.
Thanks for the update Kalviery. Please ignore all of the negative posts. Some of us understand that sometimes things happen that are out of your control.
No worries! Whenever we have a pre-patch, we expect more of these unusual maintenances. We know that the additional downtime is an inconvenience and try to avoid it.
The WOW team is fixing hundreds of bugs every day, and some of these bugs require the realms to be restarted before they can be picked up.
Sometimes the impact of a bug is small enough that it can wait for a weekly reset, but sometimes the bug has enough impact to merit a quick restart. Today, that quick restart turned out to be a little longer because of the crash that was caught during maintenance.
Bruh it’s been (checks calendar) 15 years and the dev team has said they have data from TBC on, so how is this an issue? I’m just confused, a multi billion dollar company can’t hire and pay decent people/wages to ensure you have a good product for the people who have been paying for all this time. Not trying to shoot the messenger, i can’t blame a community worker, i blame the higher ups.
I see this sort of comment a lot and the assumption here is that the technology is the same, so it should be as simple as turning a TBC server back online. This assumption is inaccurate.
Not only has server technology changed over the last 15yrs, the World of Warcraft general infrastructure has also changed. Development involves porting old code onto new systems.
The original game data is used as a reference point, to ensure the new game matches the expected experience. But the technology under the “hood” is all new.
They cover a little of this in the blogs from before Classic launched:
Frustration is definitely understandable though! I hope this info helps shed a little more light on the complexities that are involved in running a live service game like World of Warcraft
Can we also get a quick explanation as to why we had a maintenance to begin with on Thursday after just having maintenance on Tuesday, and will this be a common occurrence?
