this just worked for me!
first I force stopped both apps, then opened bnet followed by companion and now all is well with the world.
I had this problem for days. Finally, I logged into the game with my laptop. I cannot really play much of the game from this laptop, but I can move my characters around and run the missions. After I had accessed several of my characters, I exited the game. Then, the WoW Companion app worked for all of my characters.

Mine is working! I didnt do anything except keep checking. Lol
