This was likely long before Azshara’s reign, and every Night Warrior we have seen invoked Elune’s power for retaliation. Trolls historically have also desires taking other people’s lands, as seen at Arathi. And as Skycaller pointed out:
There has been nothing suggesting they ever went to the extremes of the Horde’s deforestation acts. I mean, Elwynn is still a relatively beautiful and NOT deforested area.
She helped kill her father who was attempting a genocide. While I wish she had pulled a Grom and just imprisoned her father, she did what she thought was best for peace.
Had she not done this we would have had a Fourth War sooner. And the Legion or any other threats we had to deal with would have crushed us all.
In order to further distance themselves from WOTC and it’s IP, Paizo eliminated Drow from their world and replaced them with a new type of Serpentfolk.
Referring to the acceptance of racial hatred as the “Tolkien Age” is kinda sad, given that it’s well-documented that Tolkien was deeply conflicted about the “inherent evil” of orcs. It’s a part of the books that he kinda regretted after publication, because it didn’t line up with his personal morality or his religious worldview.
It’s been a long time, but in the last book (?) of the trilogy, there is a point where Bilbo and Sam overhear some Orcs talking. IIRC they mostly just talk about their lot in life rather than relish the evil they do. Even they got a sympathetic moment.
One of the aspects of modern society is how “binary” it is. Your side is without flaw. Any example of something bad is cause for blanket condemnation of entire groups. You see that a lot here.
This is hardly ‘modern’, in fact I’d argue it was even more frequent in the past. It comes from being unempathetic and being unwilling to re-examine one’s own beliefs, something which is hardly rare in any era.
Here specifically on the WoW forums it comes from an emotionally immature audience trying to parse a badly-written product.
Wait, were you just talking about American socio-politics, or human society in general throughout history? If it’s the former, then I actually agree with you.
Humans are tribal creatures, it is how we are hard wired. These days we tend to manifest that in the form of sports teams and political parties, but it is the same instinct to see the Tribe as good as the Outsider as bad that has always been with us.
It was never perfect, but it has gotten worse. At least compared to a couple-three decades ago.
At the risk of revealing how old I am, one thing that everyone noticed was, when anonymous posting became a thing was how nasty it was. That was when the term “flame war” was coined. Over the years, I’ve seen it grow as social media developed and watched it spread outside of the internet.
I play chess online. At first I was surprised how many people would, the moment is looked like they would loose, just abandon the game and try and force the other guy to wait for the clock to run out. At first I was thinking, well there maybe a lot of children acting like children. Sadly, it was adults who couldn’t handle anything that didn’t like.
Wait, you didn’t know that the Drakkari, Amani, and Gurabashi were originally from Zandalar and only traveled out to eventually establishing their own capitals after chasing the Aqir?
You have to think of Maiev as a Klingon, once you accept that her first approach to everything including sibling relations is with a warglaive, you can deal with her.
If they were peacefully expanding into “uninhabited” lands, what did they have a military for, then?
Also if your idea of “peaceful expansion into uninhabited land” is American expansion into the west, this is really beyond the scope of a discussion about fake video game history but uh, that’s a terrible example to use.
I was surprise at this as well. However with so many Night elves defecting to the Primals and Druids of the Flame… I can speculate that there has been unrest on the night elf culture for some time…
Specially if their leaders are sometimes napping for a few centuries or are going head strong into battle not attending the “political, cultural or unrest” of the challenges of every day life of Night elves.
And to be fair with War or World Ending threads happening, most being from outside races, every expansion I don’t thin there has been much time, to work on that social aspect of being a ruler or leader. (IMO)
So I can see “some” Night Elves splintering constantly… I like to see where does that plot lead. Or maybe it be splintered time shenanigan again?
Maybe its just to tie in the story of the Primal and the Druids of the Flame… to let the players know where these elves came from?
Oh I know the west was a bloody mess but I would say not every settlement was out for blood or conflict and just wanted a town to start a life.
Similarly, I think the night elves would have left most of the natives alone as long(and they did based on Chonicles sans the trolls but that is an even more complicated mess) they didnt particular encroach on these cities.
Like I think ancient Kalimdor was more like vast tracks of land with a few cities actually being centers of civilization.

Once again Dreadmoore proves he is a known liar and by his own words, no-one should take him seriously.
I think Dreadmoore has proven he knows nothing about the Lore unless you slap his face with it millions of times.
So why did you claim that the other troll empires were “born” in the regions of their empires? If you knew that wasn’t the case. Then get so butthurt over being ‘corrected’ about it?
