I’d say it’s more like the last time blizz took away marksmanship’s pets. People did not acclimate, and blizzard brought the pets back because of the backlash.
Right? I mean, they left mage with essentially 3 identical specs — only difference is the big ball o’ magic you lob is a different color. No one at Blizz seems to think that is so terrible.
(Before I get hate replies from mages, yes I know mage play styles are different for each spec, but come on, not so different as, say, having a melee mage!)
Guns and eagles! It’s a bottle of ranch dressing away from 'murica! Spec.
Probably because if every spec is essentially the same thing then there’s no point in having specs to begin with…
Thinking the big company will change something because you want it is trolling.
Sometimes they revert it, sometimes they don’t.
They didn’t with surv and because of that, Ive been bm since legion.
Thats the way the cookie crumbles sometimes.
The thing people don’t acknowledge with this point is that they are being taken away again. So clearly something isn’t working if its this back and forth thing.
(And just playing mm feels super clunky but that’s another argument that doesn’t involve pets at all)
Honestly, I think it became crappy as the result of the evolution of the overall game over time, in ways that aren’t easy to design around. The upshot is to make opting out of pet (I do not count temporary summons as pets for this purpose) by far the sanest choice in modern MMO gameplay whenever it is a choice.
It was great when mechanics were slower paced; it’s also pretty great when you’re soloing basic mobs. For modern fast paced play it sucks having a pet though, mechanics can often be tough enough to keep yourself alive during while keeping uptime without adding in “helping your pet dodge the bad too, using the fairly awkward positioning controls of a 3D action RPG” to the mix.
Then there is the Mythic+ angle, where you so often have to stop to unsummon and resummon the pet to be able to execute skips. That’s practically adding a whole death’s worth to the timer each time in many cases.
Quick fixes are hard to find; the obvious and tried one of giving pets greatly increased AoE damage reduction easily led itself to degenerate pet cheese strategies (sometimes noticeably eating into the Tank role if you aren’t careful because with that design choice the pet takes so little damage in some cases it’s sturdier than a real tank), so squishy pets came back.
Which means maintaining your pet has to be outsizedly important to make you want to bring one into modern combat, and at that point you don’t have MM anyway, you have BM. Which has become a very unfun spec to play at endgame exactly because of what I just described. It’s a big reason why I haven’t actually played this Hunter I’ve been posting as in a hot minute, actually …
They could expand the system…Give people the option of
capturing the spirits of and running different pets of this nature,
with different capabilities, like other pets…
This would preserve the Hunter fantasy of Pet while embracing
the ethereal nature of their new idea.
This is the problem with our developers…they think their ideas half
through and call it a day.
