I won’t say always, because I’m sure the art team could knock out something really killer that’d ultimately persuade me, but as it stands, I dislike the idea for pretty much the same reasons you’ve listed.
That being said, I do look forward to eventually seeing Calia make an appearance in-game. I’m very curious what she’ll get up to, and with the “Light can be just as bad as the void” angle they’ve been pushing lately, it wouldn’t terribly surprise me to see her turn hostile someday either.
While I prefer San’layn as an allied race (let’s face it, they have a lot of potential for cool designs/customization and lore, not to mention their unique aesthetic) I’d be happy with undead elves. It’s better than not having undead elves at all and I’ve wanted to play one for a long time.
I actually disagree about void elf lore. It suffers from a lack of fleshing out, sure, but there’s nothing egregiously bad about it. Void elf lore is blood elf lore. The entire foundation of what we see regarding the void elves is based on two facts about blood elves;
Despite not being considered “high elves,” many blood elves still remembered their friendship with the Alliance and were tentative to join the Horde; their traditional enemies. To anyone who believes blood elves should never have been in the Horde, void elf allegiance to the Alliance actually makes an incredibly amount of sense, especially given Umbric’s dialogue in the war campaign.
Blood elves have been seeking alternative magic sources for years, and it was never exclusively restricted to the fel. They dabbled in almost everything, and we see blood elves messing with the void as far back as Burning Crusade. One actually becomes a voidwalker.
As it stands right now, I’m not actually convinced Calia is going to end up with much of a role outside of written supplemental lore material. It’s often the case that figures seem like they’re going to have huge roles but we have to remember WoW is a huge bedrock filled with lore and it gets cluttered very easily. Mal’ganis was shown to be alive, yet he doesn’t do anything in Wrath. Med’an is shown to be kicking around and is built up to be the next guardian, only to quickly have that position retconned and now he’s got absolutely nothing to do. They might keep Calia on ice for a few years as the political situation of the Lordaenians continue to develop and the forsaken continue to reevaluate their place in the world, but I don’t necessarily believe she’s a herald for a brand new allied race. The ceremony that produced her didn’t seem to be replicable to any old corpse found along the side of the road.
They need to put some story into where these humans are coming from and the lore behind how he got his new body makes it really hard to make a decent amount of them.
San’layn on the other hand are just vampires meaning its easy for them to get new numbers.
I was going to write something out about how they would need to add far more lore and characters to explain san’layn in the horde, compared to just another version of forsaken…than I remembered how lazy the void elf into quest is. Who knows.
A group of san’layn were already part of the Horde this xpac.
They could have the Horde find out what happened to them and one of them has a map that leads us to their last stronghold which we then go and recruit them doing some quests for who ever is leading them.
From what I understand, Dreven and his squad were basically trialing for the horde. If they succeeded in their mission, they would be considered for membership, but they failed. Not only that, Dreven killed a bunch of forsaken in the process to power himself up. If san’layn do join the horde, I don’t think it will be as a result of those guys.
Many think that, but the wording with the Horde turnin was surprising! Here’s some speculation on the matter:
–> Nathanos did say that the mission was a success when you finish that bit on the Hordeside, to get the body of course.
–>What if the San’layn were meant to be a distraction and therefore succeeded in the mission? We didn’t know what they were ordered to do in the first place.
–> Also, every San’layn converted likely was not kept on those ships, pragmatically that’d be a very stupid decision, especially since they’re powerful undead.
–>I’m guessing that they did in fact win the mission, and though Dreven was a sacrifice, the Horde got what they had come for.
I didn’t know there was a horde version of those quests, where are they at? I’ve finished most of zandalar, I assume it’s part of the war campaign in kul’tiras?
Yeah, it’s a part of the Horde Warfront, when you go out into the open ocean, you as the Horde toon are tasked to retrieve the body. When you emerge from deep diving, there’s 2 sinking ships, and you turn the quest in at the third one, where Nathanos is standing. If you go exploring Hordeside, there’s 3 friendly San’layn that seem to be casting something on the sinking ship, but we don’t know exactly where they go. You have to do some digging to actually see them.
Also, everyone… look at what just came out. (Spoilers!)
Dark ranger’s spare cowl, a toy to turn into a Dark Ranger… well, it seems like it wouldn’t be an AR after all, if it’s a very new toy, eh? If it was an old toy it would be different, but… this one is fresh and new.
So, they added them in 8.1 and they weren’t already there from 8.0? See, this sort of thing right here is why I can’t write off San’layn just yet. They may not be at the front and center yet, but they’re still around in the background and doing stuff–even if we don’t really know what.
I really like the idea of seeing them try to go home eventually. They were among Kael’thas’s most loyal followers when they joined his campaign in Northrend, everything they did was for their homeland. How would living blood elves feel about them today? How would they feel about them?
No sorry, they’re there in 8.0 at the very end of the Horde campaign; this album is what you see until you move on from that part of the campaign: https://imgur.com/a/T16V9FZ
The only thing we know added for the future is the quill. Sorry for the confusion! If they were added in 8.1, it’d mean something much bigger.
One disadvantage of the new format. Previously you could say “I answered that on page six” and maybe they could find it. Trying to scroll up in three hundred posts is a bit more daunting.
That’s fine for your opinion, but we disagree and will continue to be here. It’s that simple.
Yeah true, granted it was addressed like a few posts up thankfully. Unfortunately we can no longer link posts either… hmm…but I bet I could quote the ones I was talking about, hang on…
My response to this:
Was this…
Which also is a reply to that other one too.
I really should add that all in my first post–oh wait it’s there, people just don’t read it, hehehe. Ah well. I’ll add more to my first post and refine it eventually.
