hopefully not on rppvp, they never were in the past and it isn’t the time to start being a fuddy duddy.
I think for some races, like Tauren who come from a very nature based culture, names based on plants or animals are fine under RP rules.
And undead like rotgut or names like that. Even blizzard has some NPc’s named like that
Ive always played it as kill them until they leave the zone and go elsewhere. Ive also been known to accept beg, or worship emotes instead.
Hold up…you speak for yourself there, guy.
I’ve never had a problem with RP-spectators, casuals, shy newbies and non-joiners who want to enjoy the (slightly) more zen environment of a RP server while not roleplaying as long as they’re not trolling or causing problems. And no, existing isn’t causing a problem. Standing silently and at a distance that doesn’t interfere with your conversation is not causing a problem.
In fact, here’s a hot take - I don’t care about RP server naming rules either, although I conform to them myself out of personal preference. I never report for unoffensive “non-RP” names. Because of TRP and MRP, pretty much the only time you ever even find out an OOC name is if you need to look it up to send a whisper or mail. Who cares if the in-game name is “Odoylerulez” if it always shows up in /say, emotes and hover-over as Lord Cecil Scruffington the Third?
And I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but at some point Blizzard did actually figure out that Roleplayers are the only subscriber base that they have that keep their accounts active through content lulls.
- No sharding in any non-current zone on RP servers, worldwide? Because roleplayers asked for it.
- The Transmog system, even though the rules can be overly-restrictive and dumb sometimes? For roleplayers.
- Elixir of Tongues? Roleplayers.
- Inky Black Potion for darker nights? Roleplayers.
- Quick GM action on harassment, trolling and disruption during huge regular events like the Tournament of Ages? Roleplayers.
- Working with addon developers to put in fixes or workarounds for lua files when major RP addons like TRP are broken by changes in the game’s programming? Roleplayers.
Overall, I don’t need to be a gatekeeper for other people’s good time, as long as that good time doesn’t actively disrupt my good time - and no, standing nearby and doing nothing doesn’t disrupt the good time of anyone reasonable. I don’t need to force the “less nerdy nerds” to do some kind of retributional penance where they’re forced to participate and interact with me.
Would the name “Jawbone” be against RP server rules? Was thinking of a Forsaken Pirate Rogue on Bloodsail Buccaneers that is obviously missing his Jawbone and communicates with emotes during his quest to find a new jaw. The quest would end most likely when Blizz adds paid appearance changes.
I don’t see why it wouldn’t. While it is a two word name, it isn’t derogatory and it easily could classify as a Nickname or a Surname.
That’s like the plethora of Elves named Moon______ or ______Song.
I would place that name in the same category.
Exactly how old? Asking for a friend. >.>
At the bottom of that naming policy is a disclaimer that Blizzard reserves the right to rename your character to a random name. That seems harsh!
I found this though, which seems to suggest that what is more likely to happen is they will flag your character for a rename, and you can pick a new name yourself. Much less harsh.
They generally flag your name in the following manner:
Critonmyface
‘Your character has been flagged for a namechange’
CritonmyfaceXXX will appear in your character selection screen with a NC icon.
Blizz tends to give players a few chances to name their characters appropriately, however if it becomes an ongoing issue, they have in the past created a list of names for the player to choose from, or will simply random generate a name for them.
If the player doesn’t like it, they can go through account services, pay for a name change and try again
As much as you claim otherwise you are exactly telling people how to RP. The RP framework you have to work with is the npc world and if you want to other players to be part of the story you envision then thats great if you find some and you can create a cooperative rp work together.
To expect everyone to align in your goals and vision is both unrealistic and very arrogant. The accents and backgrounds you spend so much time developing could very well not fit into someone else’s own vision of how the world is. You will notice the rp rule set doesnt give rules on how to rp and if you expect more out of players than what the rules indicate then you are the part of the problem and not an advocate for RPing.
You are conflating how to RP with RPing in general. No one is telling anyone how to RP. All I am saying that the RP realm is for RP. If you roll on the realm, you should expect that the ruleset dictates not to break character, etc.
The only problem here is people who seem to believe that RP realms are not for RP. That is it ok to use those realms for whatever you want. Well, that’s pretty arrogant if you ask me. You already have tons of non RP realms to choose from. Why in the nine hells would you roll an RP realm then?
This!
My Forsaken Rogue on Grob is named Quince—because he once was a human boy who is now furious at the living because they are alive while he is Undead.
This!
I believe players who play on the RP realms ought to be as committed to RP as the PvP players who have heavily populated the Classic PvP realms.
RPers, whether PvE RPers or PvP RPers, may never equal the numbers PvE or PvP Classic WoW players have, but we ought to have a similar commitment; and our commit to RPing deserves as much respect—and from ourselves as well.
Except that the server rules dont and never have dictated you are expected to never break character. If you enjoy RP in any sense, even just engaging with the games story from a first person point of view as you do quests you are a role player (this probably includes most of the player base at some point during their play).
There are a few common courtesies that go along with being on an rp server as well as some additional naming guidelines. When you insist people have to take it further than that you are telling people how to rp and your posts sure read like that to me.
Anyone who is curious about rp in a game generally has some interest in that games story and lore. If all the rp’ing they do is enjoy the story of the game while doing quests and still want to enjoy the rest of what the game has to offer they should feel welcome on any rp server.
Yes, they in fact have:
Its weird how your quote only mentions specific channels for a place to stay in character and you somehow read that as being blanket statement for everything?
Nope. Blizzard treats it like a regular realm and enforces nothing.
Have you ever heard of Moonguard Goldshire? It is literally an ERP den.
pretty much yea, rp servers have rules in place
