Rotation Guides? Textbook? Lecture?

I wondered why the rings didn’t ever have any primary stats too…

I guess that makes sense!

I think there is a real question here as to what you consider “acceptable” DPS and where you got that number?

I think there are a lot of numbers that float around in conversations that you have to take with a grain of salt. It always helps to have the right “target” first as to what you want to achieve and make sure it’s reasonable. There are so many things that can impact your DPS just as much as being precise with your rotation, like having your 4-piece tier set, the right trinkets, etc.

You are to an extent, but that doesn’t stop other things from having value. Agi might be better than crit or Vers for example, but 3 agi is not better than 70 crit and 33 Vers.

Current expansion has gems that give 70 main stat + 66 secondary, which you can wear 1 of, and then gems that give 70 of one secondary and 33 of another, which go in the rest of your slots.

Ohhh, that makes a ton of sense. Especially because one of my stats becomes crit.

Is there still a soft crit cap you’re supposed to reach and then focus on enchanting and gemming other things?

Well, it’s mostly because I want to raid and find a guild. So, I know most people are expecting DPS in the millions and I am not even in the top 10 in LFR.

Is this the character you play most? It doesn’t look like this character in particular has done much LFR or dungeon activity.

It’s more about having a strong balance nowadays. Things aren’t as simple as Max out A then get B. The more of a stat you have, the less valuable it is compared to other stats you have less of. Obviously each spec will still have preferences or things it doesn’t want (I believe WW really doesn’t want much haste).

If you read the guides and practiced on dummies, but are still doing very low DPS, the chances are you probably do not fully understand your class abilities and why they are used at certain times.

In that case, it is probably best if you can find someone, maybe in class discord, who can walk you through the rotation. Even better if they can guide you while playing together.

Crit=Vers>Mastery>Haste is what ive been going by.

Not 100% sure who the ww person is there but an organisation like Visage is probably a good place to look for someone who can sit down with you and explain things in a more bespoke environment. I do a lot with them for shadow priest. It’s basically a free coaching programme.

Oh, I have something like 127 alts. I stopped playing because the story was locked behind Renown. I came back for Plunderstorm, got Plunderlord, and a local friend has been playing with me in Remix.

This is just my new favourite character.

I wasn’t 100 percent sure, but I had a feeling you were the guide writer. Thank you for you service the guides you write are incredibly helpful! I always go back to them when I need information for my spriest.

I like the current guides way more than Thottbott, Ten Ton Hammer, and Elitist Jerks. Especially Elitist Jerks, they always made me feel sorta bad about myself.

Ah, I got ya.

Still, my point is that gear can have a lot to do with how “acceptable” your numbers appear. Even when your ilvl is approaching the rewards given by your chosen content, you can notice huge gaps when you don’t have tier set bonuses, specific trinkets, etc.

That’s good to know, that’s like when feral went from a rotation to a priority list in WotLK and you prioritized Savage Roar at certain combo points.

That makes sense, when I got this new weapon with the use spell my damage increased dramatically. I really like it! :>

Haven’t seen it mentioned once.

You can go to RaidBots with your SimC output, input it within their site and hit Quick Sim for single target, or multi-target up to however many you like, for however long you like. You can then look at the results of the sim and if you scroll down the page you’ll see a list of actions performed by the sim for your character. While it’s not always perfect, it WILL give you a very good idea of what your opener should look like, followed by your normal “rotation”.

It will give you data one when to pot, use trinkets, etc., etc.

There’s also a site that tracks the plots the action lists of CD and consumables for all classes on all bosses on all difficulties. This can lead you to insight on when players of your spec/class are using their CD’s/Consumables on any given Raid boss.

But to not get ahead of ourselves, the first thing to do is to understand what your rotation is working towards with it’s “Generators” and “Spenders”. From there it’s just about not spending when it’s not time to spend and so on…

Hekilli the addon is a good tool to get an idea, but it’s not always good for Openers.

One thing I used to do was if I could, put all of my opening spells/actions into a Cast-Sequence macro and then I’d spam that until I memorized all the actions, then I could get rid of it. Do what you need to do to learn the opener and then your maintenance outside of the opener going towards your next set of CDs.

This is so true, I recently wanted to test and see how destro was on my 511 item level lock which is geared for demo. But when I switched , I wasn’t pulling as much dps as I do in demo because my stat prio was all off, which kind of sucks because that means I would need a whole separate gear set just for destro and tier in different spots.

Not a whole different gear set, just some extra pieces to more optimally distribute secondaries.

I think there’s probably 4-5 piece difference between my Destro/Demo sets.

It may just be that I am an old man, but it really feels like the game is overly complex with all the layered power systems and stuff.

I do hate that when switching roles. I like to heal, too, but Resto wants crit and versatility. Enhancement wants haste and mastery. Wish I could switch between the two when I wanted without feeling like gearing one was at the expense of the other. Having the wrong secondary stats has a huge impact for many specs.

One thing to remember, and I think stress. As gameplay has gotten more complicated and the encounters more demanding the theorycraft has shifted away from an exact science for most. Sure it is still is an exact science for a robot but you aren’t a robot. We’re ALL making mistakes ALL the time, the better players are just making less.

Theorycraft has gone away from “XYZBC123 in this order is always right” to a group of heuristics and best approximations that will work well enough most of the time in most situations. Sometimes we can math out the right thing to do, such as how most classes open / order their cooldowns in simplistic raid fights, but most of it is building you a strong foundation and understanding from which to learn how to deviate.
