No one said anything about the first amendment though? I’m talking about the idea that as a society, we should have never coupled the idea of “He think thing I no like, me try and ruin life!”. You don’t need to invite them into your personal life, you don’t even need to pay attention to them, but you should not be supportive of witch hunts to silence speech that you don’t agree with. Not if you actually want the ability to speak in the long term.
I suppose you’re under the mistaken impression that they refused to serve them a cake? When what was actually at issue, was whether they were obligated to make a special cake for them. My recollection of that case, was that they were willing to make a cake, but they were not willing to decorate it in the way that they wanted it decorated.
Freedom of speech before the first was written only existed for those with money power and personal armies to defend them. So I’m not sure at what point in time your referring to where it was a virtue because it wasn’t you could be hanged burned at the stake other unfun things for speaking your mind.
