RIP Akira Toriyama

More than a pop icon. He basically defined what shonen anime is and helped mold modern anime as a whole.

If not for him and Dragonball anime wouldn’t be what it is today.

Hope he’s up there with the creator of Yugioh sharing a drink. Another great person taken too soon.

The Chrono Trigger Game was originally going to use the Maps from Secret of Mana but that changed and they created new Maps as the Devs reused the old Maps for Secret of Mana…

Considering the mention of Seeds and Marle mentioning something about burning up before vanishing due to the Time Paradox I strongly suspect that instead of disappearing Marle was going to simply gain Fire Magic. Probably get a recolor as well. Of course thinking of recolor and Marle’s resemblance to Bulma I wonder if Marle was originally supposed to be Bulma and Chrono Trigger was supposed to be a Dragon Ball Game?

I found out later he designed characters for Chrono Trigger. Looking at it now, the main character from Chrono Trigger looks very similar to Goku.

Sad for the loss, but glad I got to experience his work while he was alive. He has a great legacy and left the world a better place than when he entered it.

He was also the artist for Chrono Trigger and Dragon Quest, easily some of the best RPGs ever made.

A sad thing to hear. This is tragedy for both dragon ball, crono trigger, and dragon quest fans.

May he rest in peace.

… After 25 minutes of yelling and powering up for the fight that never happens this episode.

We can’t. They stop working when their creator passes. :disappointed_relieved:

I won’t lie, JDF’s passing hit me hard. He was a big part of my childhood. I got the honor of meeting him face to face twice in my life. I was devastated when he passed.

Miyazaki is still with us…but he’s 83 so no telling how much longer he has.

It will be another very sad day when he passes.

You realize that wasn’t Toriyama right? They were making the anime along with the manga. They kept getting ahead of the manga and, rather than just wait to make episodes until the next manga chapter came out, Toei decided to make filler while they waited.

Don’t forget Doctor Slump too. That one was really only popular in Japan, it’s only known in the west because the characters from it made a cameo in DBZ.

Incidentally, Toriyama actually died of the same condition that Chekov developed in Star Trek 4, when he was running from people on the carrier and fell off the platform. The one where they had to bring McCoy and his future tech into the hospital to save. In reality…the odds of survival with subdural hematoma are very low since we don’t have doctors coming in with 23rd century technology to save people and regrow other people’s kidneys.

Hey, I never was good at keeping up with others in this way but, for what it’s worth, Akira Toriyama, rest in peace. Your art was seen around the globe and loved by many. A truly iconic style.

Creator of Dragonball, which is how most people in the West got in to anime, that or Sailor Moon.
