I think with the coming of the 20th anniversary and a lot of modernization of old systems, I think it’s time whoever is in charge of name availability take another look into the current ruleset for it.
The way it stands now, there are probably thousands of names at this point sitting on unplayed level 1 characters on various realms and accounts that due to the current rules, will never be made available and just sit unused for the pure sake of “well what if 1 day in 40 years from now I want to use that name on this specific server?”.
It’s a pretty outdated way of thinking, and if a bunch of hostage names can get freed up more regularly on unplayed level 1 characters, I think it should be re-talked about by the support group or whoever handles these discussions.
Even similar to how character deletions work, maybe unplayed characters can have their name freed up after a certain amount of time up to a level cap where they are no longer available to be auto-available, similar to how deleted character purges work.
I think it’s well past time we just accept that thousands of great names are just unused and can never be made available for the entire life of this game because of the current naming rules and guidelines.
You’ll want to edit your OP and move it to General Discussion.
Customer Support is not a place where any feedback or suggestions are gathered, as it is actually the only forum where no staff comes to beyond our SFAs. And it is not part of their job to relay your thoughts along to the proper party. General Discussion is the most appropriate forum, or through the in-game suggestion and feedback interface.
Then make your suggestion in the General Discussion Forum so that the people who make such decisions can see it and take it into consideration. They do not come here, nor are the Blues here liaison to them.
The above paragraph seems to indicate that you may not understand how the current system works, Squidshot. Specifically the following as stated in this support article:
All the character names in a Battle.net account automatically become available after the Battle.net account remained inactive for two expansions. Blizzard Customer Support will not help with releasing the name of a character for you, even if the player who has the name has stopped playing.
So unlike the deleted character purges, which are limited by the level of the character that was deleted, a held name has no cap. A level 1 character can lose access to the name the same as a level 70 character.
As noted though, if you feel the system should be changed, you will want to submit your suggestion to our Game Developers may see it, as they are the ones that created the system and determined how it would work.
