Someone has clearly never played WoW from Vanilla through Wrath.
I agree fully it should NEVER EVER get back to BFA or even mop/cata levels of story prominence.
But we dont have a cold war, we dont have any war at all to speak of.

True. I donât disagree there has been an overcorrection because of the failed wars.
But also, I think the war story lines and they way they were resolved kind of ruined most options for a non-war rivalry. Is there a way to get back there? Probably, but it needs to be done VERY carefully. And a war should never again be even considered.
Right now, I am not sure there is one in WoW. Because of what they did with the previous wars as BfA was wrapping up I was kind of hoping that the factions would actually break up and we would just have all the different races on their own.
Put up or shut up.

- How can you make a war fit the story we have now without making one side a villain?
- How do you resolve a war where neither side can win, where everything has to return to the status quo, satisfyingly to even a moderate portion of the playbase?
Vanilla through Wrath was distinctly NOT a war. The war started in Cata and was a complete disaster.

So how do you propose they correct this overcorrection?
Create 3 dimensional societies with nuance, political intrigue and a unique cultural identity that inherently opposes the core motivations of another society.
Create fully fledged people to inhabit these societies that represent different wings of this faction, some of whom are more aggressive than others.
Let these two societies come into conflict naturally based on resource concerns, territory disputes over newly discovered lands, and cultural incompatibilities.
Voila. You now have room for a decent faction conflict.

That expansion was written in the midst of some of Blizzardâs worst practices toward its employees and its fans.
It is the definition of corporate incompetence and wasted potential brought about by disgusting, greedy, and out of touch behavior. Not everything is subjective.

Itâs hard to have a conversation with people who dont know what words mean, have no media literacy, no cultural literacy, and use their lack of knowledge to justify the gutting of a core aspect of a series we all ostensibly want to see succeed.

When did I say it was? Iâm saying games should improve upon their core concepts overtime, not scrap them entirely. This isnât hard.
Since youâre asking though, I do think vanilla did a bit of this. I remember Alterac Valley being described as an âImperialist rightâ for the Alliance (apparently Magni said that), while the Frostwolves saw it as their newly claimed home and saw the Alliance as invaders, but as far the Alliance is concerned this is land that technically belonged to the Alliance (before Alteracâs betrayal).
Just a tiny example of moral nuance leading to faction conflict. Is it enough? No.

It doesnt cost a lot of money to have some better dialogue referencing the differences between factions. It doesnt cost a ton of money to write your story in a direction that incorporates a major aspect of the setting a little more.
