Returning player - Worth it?

Hey all,

I played Classic until just before Wrath launched, and then had a break and came back to retail. Was thinking of getting into Wrath. Is it worth it for returning players? Or is there noone doing the earlier content anymore? Don’t want to hit 80 just to find I can’t get any groups etc.

Appreciate any feedback

the game is top-heavy so it will be a very large effort to recover the gap between you and the playerbase without a VERY understanding and helpful guild.

it will be a real challenge, if that’s what you’re looking for.

I wouldn’t come back until cata pre-patch tbh. unless you are strictly only lvling to prepare for cata try and get the most out of the joyous journeys xp buff and only play on bene or faerlina otherwise you’re gonna have a extremely rough time finding groups. even on megaservers its a fiasco unless you buy wow tokens and buy gear in gdkps

Yeah I thought that all might be the case. Thanks for the insight fellas. Much appreciated!

For PvE if you can find a guild to play with then sure but if for PvP expect to queue into BG’s with 50% bot accounts that just full run head on and feed kills to the other team and basically stand there like an npc

I wouldn’t recommend it much when most people are just waiting to kill LK and leave or have already left. You can still easily find a guild but for gearing up I would just not do it, spamming wotlk dungeons ad nauseam doesn’t seem a good experience for me or pvping cringe. If you want to play cata I would level a character and do his professions in preparation, you won’t have much people contesting ressources atm.

Come back to casually level a character or two in preparation for Cata.

I would not come into the game right now expecting to join a guild, get fully geared, and raid consistently. Not unless you still know some people hanging around your server.

Its only worth it to just level a character and some alts to lv.80 and wait for the cata pre patch

It really depends on what your goals are

  • Are you desiring to acquire Shadowmourne, or Valanyr? Be top parser? Be part pf race guild? Then forget about it. It’s not going to happen.
  • Are you interested in Cataclysm? Or at least trying it out? Then yes, it’s worth it. You got about 4 months to get to 80, max your professions, do some ICC raiding, get some okay’ish gear and once Cataclysm drops, you will be on even playing field with everyone else.
  • Or are you just interested in playing around with ICC to get some gear and quit? If so, it might be tougher, but possible.

If you end up playing Wrath, Google your server’s discord. Every server got one. Check their Guild-Recruitment channels and see who needs what. Reach out to said folks. Write a wall of text about who you are.

WoTLK will disappear (or that is the general thinking) towards June maybe a little later or sooner, so not really a great time to catch up with WoTLK but if you intend to play Cata then it is a good time to level alts, professions, etc.

Come back if you want to level with vanilla zones and quests… if you don’t care then I would just wait for the pre patch, no point in trying to jump on endgame right now (the gearing curve is an absolute bad joke) as a new player unless someone returning that left some phase ago…

People always ask this, not sure why, as it’s entirely subjective. If you want to enjoy wrath before it’s gone again, then it’s probably “worth it.” If you don’t care, then just wait for cataclysm or pre-level your characters.

If you are trying to raid and don’t have friends and/or a guild to catch you up and fill their roster needs you are in for a world of hurt.

If you are just trying to level up for Cata - good time to jump in and start farming those Argent Tournament dailies for cash.

If you are trying to relive WOTLK glory and dungeon it up - I wouldn’t even give it an attempt at this point.

I haven’t really been playing Wrath for a couple of months, but whenever I’ve played any WoW content, any expansion, there are ups and downs, but it’s literally always possible to find people to play with and get into end game if you’re up for it.

I think with Cata Classic coming up in the next few months, and people either taking breaks or finishing up the Shadowmournes for their alts, etc. there will always be groups looking to add to their raid rosters.

Active players are always highly sought, at any time, during any content.

I guess the idea behind asking such a subjective question, is I get an array of different answers, which ultimately helps me decide what I should do or plan to do

I wouldn’t even do that, if hes prepping, i’d just hit 80 b4 prepatch and prepatch will have wrathful gear in vendor for honor (if it follows as it did in og wrath) and that gear will be more than enough to hit 85 with nb4 replacing with 85 dungeons blues/heroics

to add to what I was saying, if you wanna play WoW, prep for cata and play SoD until Cata comes out you’ll have fun, definitely worth playing and it’s easily the most casual version of wow to have ever come out.

Returning just for WoTLK? Prob not a good idea as the reboot of Cata is just around the corner. Your only hope is that Blizzard adds a few dedicated WoTLK servers.

I mean, I do think guilds are starting to get to that point where they will soon be desperate for replacement players who can do raid mechanics.

You can carry someone in ICC normals (10 and 25) pretty easily now, IF you think that gearing them will pay off and they can contribute to HM runs, both to play out the rest of Wrath, and as a foundation for Cata.

We’re definitely starting to see “Cata raiding” guild ads already.
