So I havent played WoW since Cataclysm and im thinking of coming back again. I played 10 day trial for WoD during which i got one char to lvl 100, but i didnt play long enough to understand that xpac much.
Anyway, based on my quick browsing here, it seems theres a lot of discontent about the current xpac. Can someone provide a summary of whats wrong?
It turns out Bliz gave me a free copy of Legion. So im wondering if i should just pay for sub and play Legion without paying for BfA. I was surprised that bliz is charging $50 for BfA and it doesnt even include a month of sub. IIRC, previous xpacs used to be $40 and came with a month of sub.
So anyway, do you think BfA is worth it? Or should i stick around in Legion since I already have it for free and ive never played it? Based on what i heard, Legion was a fun xpac.

Ehhhhhhhhh yes and no. There are some good things in BfA, you just have to shut your brain off for the stuff that doesn’t work.

I think it’s up to you to decide to buy the expac and see how it works out for you on a personal level. BFA is fun in some regards, but you might be quick to see what people strongly dislike.
It’s too late into this xpac to get into it properly and enjoy any of the content that didn’t totally bomb. If you’re just the questing through the story type, you’ll be alright for the most part. But this xpac has too many systems and annoyances for people to catch up this late. Just my opinion, naturally.

Does preordering shadowlands not give you BFA? If so that secures the next expansion for u plus the old one but I may be remembering how they apply wrong idk
BFA is worth it for the levelling experience.
The “discontent” is coming from Salty players who are continuing to pay a sub fee - even though they hate the game.
If they don’t like the direction blizzard is heading - they need to unsub instead of spamming forums with the same drool that the next guy said.
BFA is good for a new player - but veteran players - or people who didn’t take breaks are probably bored to high hell.
I can say that BFA levelling (On alliance) was a very fun experience - especially Drustvar.
Legion levelling was decent - but not to the same extent.

Translation: People who are discouraged with the state of the game should go away quietly without any indication of why they are leaving, so we all can pretend there’s nothing wrong.

Its fun, the PvE content is good as are the zone stories. The whole war campaign is kinda meh sometimes. There is lots of grinding to be done though.

Yes. If you are returning and mainly play solo, it’s worth questing through the content. Meeting Bwonsomdi is worth it.
I’ve also enjoyed the game and changes (begrudgingly sometimes) from expac to expac over the years. Legion was definitely fun , was nice to not have to farm for a weapon an entire expansion.

These are my opinions as an active casual player. (I don’t push super difficult content, but I do play quite often)
I think the zone questlines, war campaign, nazjatar campaign, and the black empire campaign are fun.
World quests are pretty boring. Warfronts are fun at first but the shine wears off quickly. Islands are not my cup of tea, but are fun the first few times.
Everything involves grinding rep. Pathfinder, essences, advancing your heart of Azeroth, tradeskill recipes. This has contributed to making bfa rather alt unfriendly.
Azerite gear- was probably cool on paper, but wonky in implementation. The essence system helped rework it, but see: rep grinds
Class abilities are pruned down so much the Blizzard admitted they went too far. Rotations are easy but… probably too easy.
I found the raids to be fun. Artwork and music are god, as always. I like dungeons and m+ because it helps spice up the same old dungeons.
The 8.3 horrific visions are lots of fun. The grindy bland dailies less so, but overall 8.3 is fun. Just not sure it’s interesting enough to last until Shadowlands.
All told, I still have fun, and if you’re returning now there will probably be plenty of fun things to do at least for a bit.

OP, I was also a returning player, having left during Cata and returned during Legion. I can say that it’s worth it to come back to at least play through MoP-Legion. I haven’t enjoyed BfA very much, but I’ve spent half my time going through old xpac content and having fun with that. I still have several alts finishing up their class halls in Legion, and I’ve been back for two years now.
So yeah, I’d say it’s a decent time to come back. With the content drought until Shadowlands, you’ll have ample time to catch up on the story and pace yourself through BfA if you’d like.

it was for me; I’m having an incredibly great time. I know this is a complete personal opinion and experience, but I believe it’s worth a try. have fun in game!

No, this is a massive simplification of the issue.
If you unsubscribe - that is your biggest power.
Your relationship with blizzard is money - not management or direction.
If you cut your subscription you are essentially say; “I disagree with the direction you are taking the game, and your behaviour”
This is what it means to Boycott a game.
If you continue to pay sub fees - and continue to complain - your voice will never be heard - your active sub-fee is your consent to continue the behaviour they are exhibiting.
That’s how it works.
Your $15/month carries more weight than your personal opinion.
Sorry, don’t feel personally attacked over it. That’s just how business works.

Bfa is completely worth it just to play through and see the story, the zones, the dungeons, etc.
Doing all that will easily take a few months play time If your pretty casual.
Whether it’s worth playing beyond that is an open question but one that just playing through the story and dungeons should give you a pretty good idea if you want to continue playing or not.

You are telling people that going away quietly without saying a word about why they left is somehow an effective “boycott”.
No, it’s not. Your message is loud and clear. “Go away quietly so we can pretend nothing is wrong and the devs can keep on course”.
“Go away quietly without complaining so we can ignore the fact that there are a small number of very common complaints that people are quitting over.”

I disagree with you here. Basically all you need to do is quest for your cloak, do a few timewalking dungeons and you’ll be geared enough to get into the new raid on normal. As far as neck and corruption abilities, you can easily go full passive and stick to your normal rotation
You can still use forums without a subscription fee.
Think about it like this;
If 100,000 retail players quit - that is millions of dollars out of blizzards pocket.
That means investors lose interest - and the company suffers.
The company doesn’t suffer if 100,000 people complain whilst paying $15/month.
This is just economics 101.
Your sub-cancellation is your biggest voice - especially if you tick the reason you cancelled your sub.
Blizzard will only ever change if their pockets are affected.

I’ve found BFA enjoyable. Progressing the Horde storyline and exploring the zones has been my favorite expansion in that regard.
