"Retrieving Character List"

Hello, I cannot seem to play retail World of Warcraft, when I logged in, the game just showed me the realms list and when I double clicked my realm, the screen stays completely black with a legend that says “Retrieving Character List”.

I tried to look up the problem and found another topic that was already closed. Is there a solution for this issue? Thank you in advance.

Edit: Classic Cataclysm and Classic Anniversary work just fine.
Edit2: Playing on a Windows computer, not MacOS

Are u playing on a mac.

The issue that was happening yesterday was resolved. The fact new reports are popping up seems to indicate this is new. I am also experiencing the same issue, so there might be a few server issues going on.

It might also help to post the error code you’re getting once you’ve been disconnected. The error I’m getting is WOW51900201.

Most likely a PC, since I’m encountering the same issue.

I’m playing on Windows 11 and I’m not getting an error code, screen just stays on “Retrieving Character List” forever

Having the same issue. I was able to log in this afternoon just fine. But now at 11:00 PM EST, I am stuck on retrieving character list. Haven’t seen anyone else mantion this or anwser for it. Playing on Windows 11.

Happening to me as well on a PC.

This just happened in the last 15 mins or so, no error, just “Logging into game server” until I get logged out again =( - PC

I was having the same problem I updated my password to a new one and it stopped happening.

just started getting this error as well. Classic realm is fine; retail gets stuck at ‘logging in to game server’ message and then disconnects.

Was finally able to get in.

Did a scan and repair on the game, it updated and now I am able to get to characeter screen.

Not sure if this is going to be the fix for everyone but it is worth a try.

I tried it because why not, unfortunately, it didn’t work for me :frowning:

An hour+ of tinkering and nothing has fixed it/my evening game time is gone. Another day, another bug from the worst-tested patch yet.

Try changing your password on your account. Mine said it needed to be updated including my authenticator question, when I updated everything I tried it again and was able to get on without issues.

Already tried it after seeing your first post, didn’t work. Even did it a second time with an updated security question. Thanks for trying though :confused:

Same problem here

logged back in today after work - sat in dorn for about 10 minutes and got disconnected; upon attempting to reconnect i’m getting the same error again.

so the scan/repair is a temporary fix; unless something about the update today broke something else.
