Retribution Paladin - how viable will it be?

I’ve heard that, in Classic, healing is the only truly viable role for a paladin and the only one that can find a spot in dungeon groups. How did it compare in Burning Crusade? Would a Retribution Paladin have a good time in TBC, do you think?

Depends on what you think is a good time.
Do you like competing for top dps in pve and being part of the meta in pvp? Rets probably not for you.
Are you ok with being lower-mid in pve dps and suitable for a few niche arena comps in pvp? Rets your pick.
I’d still suggest to anyone to just play an Arms Warrior and only reroll ret in Wrath but if you absolutely have to play ret then go for it. You’ll have a better time than in Classic.

Ret isn’t top dps but its far from a meme like classic. They actually provide a lot of utility.

3% raid crit (although tech prot could spec into this as well)
2% party dmg
Blessings.
And main one… the ability to refresh all paladin judgments with crusader strike. Blessing of wisdom for hunters for example is huge and you want 100% uptime.

Now for the bad news. 1 ret brings all of this. Any more is less efficient because even with seal twisting you won’t be comparing to lock or hunter dps. The 2nd ret is like a fury warrior bringing nothing but dps unless for whatever reason you didn’t have 3 paladins in which case it’d bring a blessing.

So rets great. But no need for more than 1 in an efficient group so while wanted spots are limited. As great as ret is you’re not brought for your dps so just keep that in mind.

Paladins can tank in TBC. People might bring a ret for the buffs. It really depends though. We haven’t seen how its going to shake out yet especially considering they have seal of blood. I think they will still fall in to the melee problem with boss mechanics though. TBC is just a ranged heavy xpac. If a ret is on a team I bet itll be one max. I could be wrong though. We just have to wait and see because of the changes.

It’s good. Everything is good.

It’s impossible for everything to be perfectly balanced in a game with all of these different classes and specs, but its close enough to be fine.

Ironically if you’re talking from a min max perspective holy is the weakest of paladin specs in tbc. Doesnt mean its bad but in terms of power yeah… Funny how things change lol.

No. He asked if it was viable. He didn’t ask if it was the best spec/class combination in the role. To answer his question, it is definitely viable and fine.

Right. I agree with you and even stated it isn’t bad. Was just commenting on how it went from holy or you’re a troll to… you bring holy cause 2 prot or 2 ret isn’t as good as a mix of all 3.

It will be viable specially considering Alliance paladins will get seal of blood as well. You won’t be rocking more than 2 in a raid though and in pvp they will be pretty damn good in bgs.

All three specs are in great shape PvE wise. Ret DPS is pretty solid. Not the best, but tops for dps + utility right up there with the enhance shaman. Prot tanks will be a bit weaker until higher gear levels, but they’re still wanted all the way through. Holy is boring but is the best tank healer in the game. So yeah. Great class. Gets even better (all three specs) in WotLK. Ret is stupid OP then.

rets a garbage meme spec in pvp.

Prot is healthy in pve tho

Don’t worry about your dps compared to other classes, just try to parse well for your specific class.

Actually don’t even worry about dps, just have fun, the content is all trivial anyways

It’s viable. Not top tier but not a meme like Classic.

Everything will be viable in pvp because most people will just rwt for 2k rating boosts😂

In pve, they are viable, but you don’t need more than 1 for a raid, and if it’s anything like it was the first time around, people won’t want a ret for dungeons either.

It should be a bit easier to get into a group as a ret than it was before, only because people are used to rets being able dps in retail since wrath.

In PvP, they will get globaled as soon as they pop wings, because you can’t bubble.
