Ret paladin viability

keftenk ran hour long tests with each class against target dummies and that’s what the math worked out to - as I said earlier, you can follow our research and test results here:

I’m not really questioning your test method as much as I am the private server’s accuracy here.

The math shows that, given a static proc chance, then the Hunter should be winning rather solidly.

The logical assumption is that if a real time test on a private server doesn’t line up is that there is something extra going on with the proc chance of the weapon.

Which begs the question: What is the private server doing, and why do they think that’s accurate?

I can’t find any Vanilla era data on the proc chance of the weapon.

classic will be set at 1.12.1 so nightfall will be in the game

likewise, these gloves make mana a non-issue:

Black Grasp of the Destroyer
Binds when equipped

Hands Mail

279 Armor
Durability 50 / 50
Requires Level 60

Equip: [+28 Attack Power.]
Equip: [Improves your chance to get a critical strike by 1%.]
Equip: [On successful melee or ranged attack gain 8 mana and if possible drain 8 mana from the target.]

no worries - i took no offence at all

we weren’t able to find concrete numbers for Nightfall’s proc rate so the devs implemented an educated guess on it based on old videos, forum posts, db sites etc…

also note what I followed up by saying - nightfall proc rate uptime is only half of the equation to factor in

a Fury Warrior will actually have ~50% debuff uptime but giving them a Nightfall neuters their own personal DPS in the process by 500-600 DPS at BiS forever gear level (ie: KT weapons) and so it ends up being a net DPS LOSS by having them swing Nightfall.

Yeah I know about the gloves, I had them. They were very good.

I know that they say the game will be 1.12, but does that mean progression or not? No one has actually been able to nail that one down at all yet. If they have, then that took place when I was away from the civilized world for work.

Do we know for certain than the game will come with all content included from day 1 or will there be events and unlocking of content in the same way it transpired in actual Classic WoW?

we shall see my friend

If the proc had a small internal cooldown, then that could limit how much it could proc potentially happen. Or, if the proc chance is based off a ppm setup that is somehow standardized, it could also limit the amount of procs.

I know that Blizzard really loved their PPM system in Vanilla and kinda started to do away with it in 2.0 and it’s gone now form what I understand in the modern game…

IIRC, at blizzcon or during one of the talks shortly after, they said it would be the 1.12 version but they would gate the raids and pvp gear.
stage 1 would be MC onyxia, kazzak, and azuregos
stage 2 would be BWL, pvp rewards, and ZG
stage 3 would be AQ tier .5, silithus, and green dragons
stage 4 would be naxx and invasions

nightfall is thorium brotherhood rep though which is technically MC

but yes you are correct that it came out in 1.6 with BWL so we will see how blizz handles itemization release on top of raid release

I have a hard time believing Smiter’s DPS was beaten, bugged or not. He used to drop 800+ DPS logs on Patchwerk. I myself never cracked 700. But maybe that’s because he had a certain Paladin friend helping him on the judgments ;P.

yea and Smiter wasn’t a complete hypocrite in the process either!

I really miss that guy. Glad you’re still around though!

alright enough you guys can blast each other on the forums when classic launches and measure epeens about who is best then.

i actually want to play a ret paladin but the problem i have is how somewhat boring their playstyle is considering its just popping seals auto attacking and judgements mostly but i like their utility the blessings and auras, from a thematic standpoint paladins probably my favorite class in classic but warriors are just very fun to play with their rotation being much more active and their stances are fun to use as well and i cant decide what i’d enjoy playing more.

The class is what you make of it, the actual reality is that it has more buttons in its PvE DPS rotation then quite a few classes seals judgements consecrations hammer of wrath (and later exorcism and holy wrath) giving it 6 in total unlike a mage or lock; all while monitoring swing-timers to mitigate any possible swing-clipping… however if that is all you are doing; then it is the bare minimum that you can do to push your dps and is more then likely why someone would find the rotation underwhelming there are so many items outside of the rotation which are extremely strong on paladins which become integral parts of their rotation, which come together to form an extremely engaging class.

yeah i never really played a paladin in classic outside of leveling one as an alt for fun

On top of what Archeon said, you’ll find that in Vanilla rotations as a whole weren’t really as involved as modern day ones despite current WoW having smaller spellbooks. It’s more about mechanical skill than hitting a lot of buttons.

Hunters for example don’t have a ton of buttons in their rotation, but there’s a lot about shot timers on your auto attack and minimizing how much Aimed Shot interferes with that.

Though if you’re looking for a lot of buttons to hit, a powershifting Feral Druid is arguably the most complex rotation in Vanilla.

this is true feral power shiftings pretty crazy haha

i never cared for druid much the most i ever did was level one to around 25ish to just mess around with cat form i ended up eventually maining a rogue to 60 my first character was a warrior that i got to like level 23 and then i rerolled with a friend who bought the game so im actually looking forward to going back and leveling up a plate wearer and maining one at 60 this time

I also messed around with the talent calc and ive tried to come up with a sorta pvp/pve hybrid build mainly because i dont want to waste gold on respecs lol but i cant really make getting vindication and eye for an eye with repentance work unless i skip precision, im not really looking to min/max as hard as possible although i plan to actually attempt to git gud at the class

Could judgement of righteousness also proc nightfall? Only reason I am asking is due to the nightfall test thread keftank said he did a SoR/JoR 5 minute test.
