I ran my first heroic today and it was rough to say the least. It was heroic BM… Adds were kicking my butt, aoe was dropping the entire party from 80%+ to below 20% HP in a second. I burn damn near my entire mana in one pull and tank runs to next portal while I’m 40% mana and drinking a ways back and now gotta run to group, only to see a dps die before I can heal tank up from near death.
My question is: what should be my healing stats to do heroics? Is ~900 healing power good? Does my HP matter?
My healers get enough HP to not die to two consecutive hits/AoEs and I call it good. If I’m taking more than that, in a short enough time that I can’t drop a heal, the party and I have an issue.
For better/specific info people will probably need your stats and usual spell use habits.
If adds were on you then your DPS or tank failed their jobs
As for the aoe guys in BM you can anticipate it since it is a cast time so you can line up your chain heal to proc right after the aoe lands
You can drink walk if Mana is an issue and people are running portal to portal, basically spam your water while you run and you’ll get ticks for every click
Use Mana tide on CD
Use the beacons to give you breathing room if needed, that’s what they are there for
Well, a few things.
BM is like one of the hardest Heroics. I urge you do UB/SP/Bota/Mecha. They are much easier than BM. Every other dungeon you can always CC and kite. BM, really, does not allow that and really requires a VERY sturdy tank.
In terms of healing#, my alt set, with like 2 pieces of Kara gear is ~1.3k IIRC.
Look up your pre raid BIS gear list and try to farm up those pieces.
Not really. There are very few group wide AoE mechanics. As a range, you can practically avoid most of the damage, as most of it really is in melee, especially things like cleave.
As a tank myself, I can tell you that your tank did a poor job. I don’t know what class it was, but there are still ways to tag mobs to prevent them attacking healer.
I am not going to speculate your skill, but I will just add that you, as a shamy, have amazing group utility in the forms of totems. Use them. All the time. Grounding totem is amazing. Swap out mana to cleansing when dots are applied etc etc etc etc.
BM is considered a hard heroic… The YouTube video I watched said it was by far the easiest heroic in TBC. Thanks for your feedback. I will work on my + healing before doing more heroics.
BM, unlike other dungeons, is a dps/gear check, mostly due to constantly pushing adds, lack of kiting and inability to CC anything. If you are with 3 DPS who pull 1k+ each, then portals will be a breeze, but if you got like 500-600 dps folks, then it takes them twice as long to kill mobs, hence tank takes x2 damage and x2 adds spawn, thus making tank take x4 damage damage actually if my 2:33AM math is correct.
Last boss, however, hurts, especially with his 4s stuns.
Perhaps, some may disagree with me, but that’s how I see it. The second I got exalted with Caverns of Time, I am not setting my foot into BM ever again.
Heroic BM:
Heroic BM is a tough one. Sounds like you had a bad group too. A couple things:
DPS must be killing adds and keeping them off the healer
Tanks do get chunked in there. A lot of magic damage. Bosses hit hard
DPS / Tank needs to wait for mana between portals, you don’t have to engage right away. You can drink between portals.
On bosses you can let the adds go and let medivh tank them while you focus boss.
On 2nd boss, you must spellsteal or purge the haste buff or the tank will die.
On last boss: he can chunk a tank for 10k in one go if he sand blasts, melees, and cleaves at once. Keep the tank topped off. Hunter should tranq the frenzy. I sit on LoH on that boss. I have literally seen my health go from full to 30% like that :snaps: from the situation above.
On Heroics
900 healing is a little light, but should be fine.
you want 6k health if possible, minimum.
Start with Heroic slave pens, Ramps, AC, Botanica, these are pretty easy.
learn when to use cleansing totems, grounding totems, and tremor totems. Icy Veins has a good write up for most heroic trash/bosses.
Bring mana pots. Major mana pots are cheap. I always carry 10+ as a pally tank.
Heroic BM is hard as heck in the first place. When I first started I had around 900 or so healing power in heroics, but I definitely did not start at that number in BM. Like some other people said though, the group was probably bad.
Yeah even as a pally tank I can’t keep the adds aggroed in there consistently. I also can’t turn my back on the minibosses to chase them. DPS just need to step and burn them down.
I’m never in full threat gear in there either. I run balanced gear or mitt gear depending on how good dps and heals are. The magic damage really chunks.
There gave been numerous reports regarding tank threat not working right in BM.
If you and the others are wearing leveln70 dungeon blues, the dungeon should be doable. Might not be easy, but doable.
Now that that’s said, here are my opinions about gearing: shamans can wear mail and equip a shield. Many lists won’t list things as “BiS,” but I think staying alive is a “BiS” stat. You can’t always rely on the tank to hold agro. You should count in things going wrong from time to time (especially in PuGs.) Stam and armor are pretty helpful in those regards.
Right after stuff steps out of the portals they fixate on medivh until they get any player damage. There’s also a delay when they step out of the portal until they can be damaged (like 0.5 sec or so). So you need instant snap threat or the adds default to the healer since he’s constantly casting heals.
Fortunately they have no health and can just be burned down quickly.
900 Healing power is very weak for heroics.
Your HP does matter sometimes but it’s very specific to certain mechanics or encounters.
Going oom in heroics as resto shaman is fairly common. You do have to dump all your mana to keep people alive. Also, yell at people if they aren’t grouping up to optimize your chain heal. Though you won’t really be chain healing too much if you have to keep the tank up.
High Through Put is your best bet for heroics. Maximize +healing over almost anything else, including mp5.
Communicate with your tank as well. If they’re pacing too fast, they’re probably bad. you have plenty of time in BM that people don’t utilize.
