Respect the artist, and deal with consequences

Video games are art.

I’m in agreement with the OP. I always give an artist the benefit of the doubt if I have enjoyed their work in the past. Or if I’m just interested in what they are doing. I have to experience their work before I can make a fair judgement on it.

Games are works of art composed by hundreds of artists working within a single thematic vision. I want to give them the chance to thrill me so I keep an open mind and heart to what they are doing. Lately, Blizz has had a spotty record with me in that regard. But I will always give them a chance.

I wouldn’t tell van Gogh how to paint “Starry Night”, but then again WoW is at best “art by committee”, and that is giving the game the benefit of a lot of doubt. Their own doubts about their product shine through by the simple fact they ask for feedback (then ignore it, of course).

I liken it more to a fast food restaurant. If I go to McDonalds for a Quarter Pounder with Cheese and they give me a Chicken Sandwich, I’m going to mention it. The WoW devs have a right to dump whatever conglomeration of pure hooey they want on us, it’s their rice bowl. It’s all about slowing down game play now anyway, that seems to be the standard they are shooting for. Fun? Irrelevant.

But as a human being I reserve the right to howl like a starving dog at the moon if I’m not happy. Even if I know it will not have any effect.

Why is player power tied to that so intrinsically?

If it is a meaningless increase, then would you miss it at all by allowing the ability to be switchable? There is no RP value in these goofy spec spells.

What happens when you find out that more than just those pesky 1%-ers choose power over RP, and blizzard changes the terms of the deal later by nerfing that ability?

Is that fair? What if you decide RP is more important but blizzard ignores power balance and 1 covenant becomes drastically more powerful? Is that fair?

It seems like an entirely avoidable mistake, and pride is preventing them from seeing it.

No, they aren’t. They are artistic, not art. Their primary purpose is interaction, not observation.

looks at people that have to watch movies for the purpose of reviewing

…uh huh

/eye roll
You sound like the “if you don’t like it don’t watch it” people when they make a bad youtube video then get butt hurt they’re being mocked.

When one puts a price tag on their art then it’s a prime target.

then maybe you should look at the game through more than your very narrow lens.

righttttt…

probably writes furry shipping fanfic

This is a game that led to people getting married and forming lifelong friendships, people are invested and consequently passionate.

Plus video games aren’t movies, they’re by their very nature interactive, fostering an even more interactive relationship with their audience as a MMO.

So no people have every right to give feedback to this piece of shared art. Not to mention the challenge of being an artist is knowing people won’t respect or appreciate your work. In short, get bent.

Not to get into “video games as art” discourse, but…

Thinking of WoW as art is a bit too generous. It’s not like some other RPGs where the creator is expressing themselves artistically and creating a video game that can stand on its own as a piece of art. WoW is a MMORPG, which relies heavily on the community for its success. In order to be successful, it needs players who are active and engaged in the game. For most people, their ability to enjoy the game will rely on how active the community is. Raiding, LFR/LFG, PvP, pet battles, certain quests… all of these things rely on having other people in the game, and the more people you have in the game, the better.

If Blizzard wants to make an RPG, then they should make an RPG. That way, players can make the choices they want without thinking about having to think about how that will impact their ability to play with others. But since this is an MMORPG, our decisions don’t exist in a bubble.

WoW is a commercial product, and as a consumer I am providing my feedback.

Thank you for bringing constructive points to this discussion… oh wait

the constructive points have been made time and time again in countless threads. I don’t feel the need to make them again in another redundant NO U thread.

The term art doesn’t just mean observing it. According to the definition here…

the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as painting or sculpture, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power.

And the graphics in games these days are appreciated for their beauty, as well some of the stories provoking emotional power, kinda like how a movie or book would. (Those in “Triple AAA” games, that’s a rare occurrence.)

Not to mention, considering video games has art teams working overnight and such, and making beautiful looking games like Metal Gear Solid 5, Fallout 4, The Witcher 3, DOOM, Star Wars Battlefront 2 (EA one), Nier Automata, Dark Souls games, Uncharted, Spyro, Red Dead Redemption 2, and so on, not to mention you guys praise the heck out of World of Warcraft art style and pretty much 100% of what cinematics and anything the art team does and so on… how are video games not art? :face_with_raised_eyebrow:

I’m very excited for Covenants and glad Ion is sticking with his word.

This is a awesome feature and those of us who like this stuff will miss it when it’s gone come the next expansion.

It’s amazing how others want to ruin the concept before it’s even here.

It’s a video game. Both are important.

If folks go back to theaters now they’ll just catch covid

You don’t understand, forum is just full of trolls . Never think of WoW player base by forums.

I went about 6 times in the last two months. No Covid. Theaters have new precautions.

“dont forget the peeps just going to movies on a date trying to get laid

Oh and how many have been left without even a kiss my friend…

I’d imagine in places like florida, those new precautions aren’t going to mean diddly.
