According to this: https://us.battle.net/support/en/article/153121 I can’t update the name on my account despite the fact that the account never had the correct name to begin with due to the fact that it sourced the original details from my google account. Am I out of luck here?
Can you explain what you mean by “sourced the original details from google”?
You are responsible for creating the account in your legal name and address. Other than what’s in the support article, Blizzard is normally hands off with that. They don’t want to make it easy for people that buy and sell accounts.
When you make a new account, it asks you for your name. It doesn’t “source” anything at all from Google. Now, if you have an autofill feature in your account with fake information, then it would have been up to you to correct it when creating the account.
If the name is clearly fake, you can contact Blizzard to see if they can help you fix it. But if it’s a real-looking name, then they may not be able to assist. Only way to know for sure is to ask.
It does. I confirmed it just now. Creating a new account gives you an option to use a Google login which, as I said sources your details from Google and populates it automatically from that information.
Now obviously the issue of what those details are another issue entirely and hence my issue. I should have corrected it manually after the fact but I didn’t. So that’s on me. But it’s nonsensical to not allow someone to simply correct such a clerical error.
I’ll try to contact blizz directly and hopefully they can allow me amend it despite what the official documentation says.
Okay, to be fair, when you said it pulled from google, I thought you meant the search engine, not a Google Account.
That said, the rest of my reply still stands. Hopefully they’ll be able to help out. But I’m sure you can see why they don’t typically change the names, as selling and trading of accounts is not allowed.
Even if you can use google as a log in, should still ask for your name and address. Unless it gets that from your google account and that does not match.
I’m not sure what you mean. As I said, those fields are prepopulated. There is no drop downs. There’s a field for first name, last name etc. If you mean address details, again, that’s all prepopulated but those aren’t the issue for me anyway.
You are required to use your legal name when you set up the account. Failure to do so would be on the user.
To change the name on the account, Blizzard requires proof you are the account holder and legal documents showing the name change from the former legal name on the account, to the new one.
This is normally done in cases of:
Marriage/divorce
A child turning 18 and the parent having the account put in the child’s name
A person getting a legal name change via the courts
If a person made a mistake and set it up with an obviously fictitious name like “Spiderman Awesome” then Blizzard can usually work with them to get a real legal name on it. It is done case by case using proof Blizzard discusses with the account holder, as well as ID.
If an account is set up in a real sounding name then Blizzard won’t change it because you can’t provide the legal documents proving you are the account holder. They won’t risk taking an account away from a real person. They also don’t allow account trading, selling, gifting, or sharing. So they do not want to facilitate it in any way.
While Blizzard does not go hunting down people who use fake names, the consequences happen when the person needs CS help and can’t prove they are the account holder. It can result in loss of the account.
You get the first post of the day and I have not had coffee. It may or may not be coherent!
I’m not here to debate responsibilities, Mira. I’m just trying to see if there was a solution to my issue/ workaround (as sometimes there are regardless what rules may stipulate as you and I both know).
As I mentioned, I’ll be contacting Blizz and am fairly confident that they will indeed amend my name details despite that going against that official article I linked due to the rather obvious nature of the clerical error in my case.
Good luck to you with that, if you just recently made the account maybe. Other wise they will need proof your the account owner. Like I d that matches the name used.
