Request for Night-Time Maintenance Scheduling in World of Warcraft

“Dear Blizzard, I am extremely selfish and will whine when I can’t play. Have your employees work terrible hours so I can escape reality quicker.”

It’s still more players playing than at nighttime.

Yes it does. You can aptly schedule around that, servers don’t just exist in the USA (Pacific, Central, and Eastern). So maintenance windows can exist outside of the 10pm-2am timeframe, IN THE LOCAL TIMEZONE. If I have servers in the UK, I would do my maintenance at 2pm-6pm Pacific, etc. If I host infrastructure for outside the USA, in the USA, then they have to follow my maintenance window.

which makes the argument better that they should split the server maintenance between different days, at the least different times of the day so people can still play on different servers during their mains downtime? I know having played since Oct 2004 I have had many friends move to other servers…so I have made characters which I actively play on at least 4 different servers…so yeah having the option to continue to play on another server would be nice instead of forcing Oceanic and East coast players and nighttime workers to suffer because of your misconstrued conception of what time everyone plays at.

Sure they have more players in the evening…doesn’t mean they should be penalizing any players because of their work hours or life choices. Blizzard needs to start thinking outside the box, even if it means keeping 10 or so servers live during these maintenane downtimes in order to not take gaming time away from the minority players.

Is this the same NASA currently being shown up by a private company or NASA who put people on the moon with 1960s tech

I’d personally love to see maintenance start at 10pm PST.

It won’t happen so eh I just deal with it.

Maybe because for some of us its not ‘business hours’ not everyone works Monday -Friday with weekends off…

Again, I don’t mind maintenance whenever, but a lot of companies in the IT/infrastructure world have an around the clock NOC that works the night shift, every night. And they have on-call techs (who may typically work an 8am-5pm job) who are at the ready in case something doesn’t go down.

Believe me, Blizzard has TONS of people who work the night shift.

Ahh its the standard ‘blizzard doesnt know the best time to bring their servers down’ topic.

They are maliciously timing downtime to inconvenience the most people, they look at network traffic, rando steve and just think…yeh …maximum damage.

They have the numbers, they want the customers, they have the staff schedules and they know the equipment and limitations of the tech they are working with.

but pop off and think you know better.

Both. NASA is my friend and I have them on speed dial so that they can tell me where the earth is in relative proximity to me

Oh my job is fine I even work from home.

Do you have to tell them ahead of time when you travel so they can adjust for changing gravity?

People on call for emergency situations is MUCH different that having your staff work night shift for the convenience of some daytime players.

I’m on the horn right now with John Brizzard, and he’s telling me they are adjusting maintenance windows to match my work schedule. And he’s giving me 100 million gold for pain and suffering.

You quoting me a bunch of CompTIA or CCNA’s doesn’t mean much… and you’ll get a quick hook putting up cert numbers. Good luck with you ruse.

Yup - usually, after I get my hourly call from Blizzard to take down the servers when I see fit…

Or to translate this for some people not understanding:

I prefer the maintenance now, so I can come home after work and play. Its been this way for years, and I don’t want to make others have to work overnights because some people don’t like to that they can’t play for a few hours
