Report: Blizzard Blizzcon APP is spyware(video)

This sounds like the Real ID debacle. I recall that vividly during Wrath. That was a point of contention with many of my friends then.

I don’t like it but I just assume these days that I have zero privacy anywhere I have electronics.

Whoah whoah wait wait wait hold the phone
the app has permission to use the camera? like, it can take photos whenever it wants? We give access for it to do that? Is that even possible or am I just freaking out over something that leans more towards Skynet over reality?

I would bet Blizz has most of this information already from subscription data, purchases in the Blizzard store and the like. Also, who knows what information the expansion phone app is privy to while you’re using it.

If Blizz is so happy to sell my payment information to whoever wants it, they’ll never have it again.

Nah, I’m just not into kooky conspiracy tripe and fear mongering over George Bush.

Then maybe people shouldn’t mention it, if they don’t want me to counter it.

Bush? lol

I enjoyed Kel’s self-analysis of being stubborn. That takes character, to me.

While most mobile apps do this kind of thing, this AXS thing is quite the doozey. In particular they scrape far more then is reasonable and reserve the right to store and sell that info later.

Definitely sounds like spyware by another name. It’s ironic because back in the day we would all call this spyware. But now the spyware makers have figured out they can just do their thing anyway but via this method and people will willingly give over their info. What a world.

My advice is to take 2 phones. A cheap dummy one you have 0 personal data or accounts on and use that for this app in addition to your actual mobile.

The title of this thread should be changed to stating it’s the AXS ticket company’s app, not The BlizzCon app.

It only hurts you if you have a cell phone which we know from last year that we dont have, right?

I think this is a good point. The sliding definition of what is spyware changing over the course of time as we (royal we) trade privacy for convenience - to some degree.

Nope, I just don’t see much point in eating a ban just to debunk the Alex Jones cult.

Tell that to everyone else who keeps mentioning it.

And that is a big problem. Clearly we need some new legislation for electronic privacy protection. The laws can’t keep up with the tech and the industry CLEARLY cares nothing for the average user.

I read over the redditt thread, its blatant invasion of privacy. I can’t believe how far this company has fallen.

Poor Bashiok, he didn’t deserve all that crap he got during that.

Oh thats who it was!? I forgot all the “details.” I don’t “know” Bashiok, but that sucks to have happened to them.
