I bring them back. If I choose to. And yes in vanilla you could abandon your demon and get a new one. Not sure if that mechanic is going to be in classic still.

Never knew about this and got me thinking. If my mind doesn’t fail me I believe my Voidwalker’s name was Thorgork.
Just for that I would say no it won’t be allowed.
Edit* Just remembered I had a sub and went to go check. I was wrong, it’s name was Thokgorg. Also got mail from an NPC saying my Spirit Shards are more convenient and no clue what those are. Hmm. Is that the BC dungeon currency if you owned towers in Terrokar or a newer Lock resource?

On a side note though “Minyen” would make an awesome character name.

Agreed. Would make a sweet half of a leveling duo or a multiboxing toon if you also got the name ‘master’ (or some variant thereof).
I always admired his dedication and stupidity. Go big or go home, amiright?
It worked, which is not the same as it was allowed. 
That said, I don’t recall anyone getting punished or banned for doing it. They did disable the macro command after word got out people were doing it. But then some time post-vanilla they made it a thing you could do any old time, so they must have changed their mind.
Tried it today on my voidwalker… it does not currently work, and just dismisses the pet without changing names.
Will open a ticket regarding this, as I’d rather not be forced to reroll if my succubus ends up with a trash name (and im already not fond of the VW and imp names i got)

I didn’t know Warlock’s could do this, if it was really in Classic then I would like to see that back.
Good luck! There was little sympathy back in the day for unfortunate names (and boy were there some unfortunate names). They’ve been pretty clear they want patch 1.12 behavior & systems with as few changes as possible, but this one might slip through since it did work for a while.
That’s for sure. My poor imp has the worst name right now, but I will grow to love it! Hopefully lol.

No, only hunters get to change their pets name. Demons keep theirs. So far Imp is Pagqua, Succubus is Elerriel, and totally forgot my VW name because I really don’t use him.

That was the intent and what was communicated back in the day. The macro hack was just that, a hack/exploit to get around the design, and that’s why they disabled it.
