Yes. They’d have to open a ton of new servers, which is what they were trying to avoid until after the people who decide they don’t want to play it have largely sloughed off. The alternative is what happened all the time back in the day–a bunch of realms that die within a few months and have to be forcibly merged with other realms and everybody loses their names to somebody who hasn’t logged in in a month.
Shoving a megaserver population into one single layer would utterly crush the vanilla experience more than anything else has so far.
Alright. I have said my peace. You people are going to argue and it seems like most people don’t understand the issue or care.
I am heading into the game. I will hop layers and get myself many rare spawns, chests, and soon devilsaurs. I will get filthy rich while you guys are level 10 and by the time you level up and I have an epic mount and your poor as hell, blame only yourself.
Even if it did it would be worth it. If players actually wanted to play the game and not run around as a puppet for Asmongold then server population wouldn’t be a big deal anyway.
So you would rather players wait in 30k+ queues instead of 3-10k queues?
I wonder what would happen to the fourms if that was the case
It isn’t that Blizzard can’t handle it, it’s that that population is not even remotely close to anything approaching authentic. What this boils down to is whether one prefers one inauthentic solution to another inauthentic solution.
I happen to prefer layering over megaservers with no community.
They don’t have to remove layering. They can just give a cool down on ‘layer hopping.’ One hop per 30 min would be adequate, IMO.
It would present a challenge with joining dungeon groups who want to summon players who recently hopped from layer A to B, then get invited to a group on C. A reasonable issue to save the economy before it’s too late.
idgaf. Nobody does. Go have fun and stop complaining and begging for your private server experience.
What happens to people who are stuck on a bugged layer with no NPC in their major city then? Wait 30 mins?
Do you want forty eight hour queues? 'Cause that’s how you get forty eight hour queues.
??? You have to be joking. Any time i try to play in the evenings I spend more time waiting for mobs to kill than I do killing them.
Sure this might work at 3 am but it would be madness at 6 pm.
I put being able to actually play over any risk of a ‘servers economy’ being ruined.
You don’t have it quite right either.
It won’t after layering goes away. As it was explained originally, layering would allow for more people on a server by having several different copies (layers) of the server running at the same time. As far as I’m aware, servers in vanilla were in the neighborhood of 3k players at a time. So if we’ve got 10 layers, 30k players on the server. Provided that their expectation of players moving on after a month or so happens, they can remove the layers. With layers removed, we aren’t having a mega server allowing 30k players at once, it’s going to go to the original capacity of 3k.
Flipping a switch and removing layering right now would send already long queue times through the stratosphere.
Exactly. I know - none of you do. I am trying to defend the integrity of the game. Most of you people are so self centered you want your individual catered experience even if it destroys the game.
This seems like the best solution.
The only problem I see with it is that, for regular non-cheaters who are out looking for a group or party to either level or dungeon, wouldn’t this be an inconvinence?
In any case I like it. Layering shouldn’t have been a thing outside lvl 30+ zones.
Then they will never remove layering and Classic is doomed either way.
Alright, HE’S CALLED IT! Classic’s doomed! We’re shutting down the servers!
I honestly am a bit worried about what happens if Classic is successful beyond Blizzard’s wildest dreams and we don’t have that 80% player drop off that they’re expecting. I mean I’ll be glad that people are loving the game, but what’s the plan after that?
Not by promoting 30k crushingly overpopulated megaservers you aren’t. The integrity of the game is a population under 5k. With layering, that means layers <5k. We could discuss server transfers but I think literally everybody in this forum has already explained why that isn’t any more ideal than layering in the long run.
Go play the game and have fun.
Classic is doomed either way.
It would be if no one could every get onto their server
Who cares if you get rich. I sure don’t.
