"Recruit a Friend" referral links return an error

“An error has occurred. Please try again later.”

TL;DR: The referral link for my child’s account have issues. First it didn’t work with above error. A day later it works (by intervention or by chance), but then after paying for the next child, they do not have option to generate a referral link at all.

Details:

Trying to set up a recruit a friend for my kids to get the mount etc while we save a bit on the cost overall. Husband - Wife - Daughter - Son - Son.

First we had a series of 504 Gateway Time-out errors when clicking the recruit a friend links. There’s no reason for this on our end that I can find.

Then I had to create new starter accounts because the originals were eventually too old and the whole system is automated and unfixable by blues, so the kids have to start over. Okay, fine, but now we’re disappointed.

Then the account was supposedly ineligible because it was the wrong realm, even though it wasn’t. So I had to create a third starter account directly under the recruit a friend link…

Now the process breaks down as soon as I send out my daughter’s recruit a friend link. If I click the link from my account as dad, or my son’s account, I get

“An error has occurred. Please try again later.”

There’s no answer for why this is happening. I have tried deleting cache, using a different browser, and using a different PC. I don’t know why I can’t recruit a friend from one child account to another. There’s no setting that disables this feature. I tried enabling everything in parental controls and that made no difference.

I am quite frustrated by the process. The parents links work fine, why are the kids links not working?

Edit: Have tested this across five computers now. There appears to be a hidden rule that accounts of a minor can not click through on the recruit a friend link of another minor.

Edit: it worked a day later. Now the next kid in the chain, after paying for their account, can’t create referral links at all.

This one would be your Internet Service Provider (ISP) having issues sending and receiving data.

As for the rest, I would recommend submitting a ticket under “purchase failure”.

That’s what I thought, but the 504 errors almost entirely only happen when logged in to battle net as one son!

If I go incognito or log out of his account they work until after I log in.

I think it’s some sort of spam protection triggered by me going there too many times under the same account while trying to get the actual linking to written.

Meanwhile the linking act itself, after logging in, gives me the listed error no matter what phone or pc or account I try it from.

I’ve put a ticket in but it’s following the recruit a friend linking problem category from a prior ticket.

The 504 Gateway errors are caused when the ISP is having trouble sending and recieving data. Let me explain in another term:

Think of it like driving in a major city, trying to get from point A to point B. But along the way, there would be traffic jams and detours. It is a similar situation in regards to the internet, but more or less, choke-points, so the data would be going through all sorts of routes to try and get the data to the location your trying to connect, while the location is trying to send the data back, which will give you what you want to see.

And since each website is hosted in all different locations, it can act to the limit to one website, some of the time, even limited to just the one service one a website. This isn’t the fault of Blizzard, or your ISP, it is just general traffic on the internet causing choke-points when sending and receiving data.

Heh. I understand, but I appreciate the time you took to gently explain it. Occurs least of all when logged out and in incognito mode. At least that has a work around.

My main issue persists. Support articles suggested by GMs are not relevant. They’re telling me how to use the RAF interface in-game, or about how joining accounts need to be new etc etc.

My daughter’s referral link was generated through the RAF interface, as normal.

But every time I get to the stage where I should be able to select which account joins the program, I instead get the error.

“An error has occurred. Please try again later.”

Here is the evidence, not that it matters. Sigh.

Maybe there’s some hidden rule that the accounts of minors are unable to generate functioning RAF links? I’ve done it before without any problems from my account and my wife’s account.

EDIT: it looks like a GM somewhere fixed it, or it just needed a day for the link to become valid. I was able to connect one child account to another (son). I paid a year subscription for him, thinking it fixed…

But now HIS account doesn’t have the ability at all to create a referral link for the last child in the chain! I’ve tried clearing cache etc.

I’m guessing it’s to do with processing payment or something.
