Reclaiming Gilneas, A Worgen Fan Reflecting

So I just finished up the Reclaiming Gilneas questline, and I have some thoughts I had to get out of my head so I can go about my evening on other things.

SPOILERS AHEAD, so if you haven’t done it, want to, and don’t want it ruined, stop right here.

ALSO: These are just my opinions and my take on the whole thing after waiting for years to see some kind of conclusion to the whole Gilneas story. Take it for what it is, I’m just getting this stuff out of my head so I can go do other things that the patch launched today.

1: The Story:

So we pick up a questline out of the Adventure guide to go meet Genn at SW Harbor, from there you griffin it on up to Gilneas. Once there, you meet with Tess, Calia, and Lillian Voss. Genn is visibly perturbed at their presence. Tess convinces him that their presence is necessary because of this sudden Scarlet invasion. Genn gives in, puts Tess in charge of the whole mission, and from there you pick up two quests to go kill some Scarlets who are digging up Gilnean remains, and bump off one guy who is desecrating Liam’s grave. Then you go through the tunnel, the same one we escaped out of in the beginning, kill more scarlets, gather some explosives, then plant the explosives, kill more scarlets, then go kill a boss scarlet, mission complete. There is a nice moment between Tess and Genn, he basically turns the kingdom over to her. We finish it off by checking on Genn, who is visiting Liam’s Grave.

So what I’m happy with in the story. I feel like there are worse queens to end up with than Tess Graymane. She’s a good character, and I’m looking forward to seeing what else they do with her. Seeing Genn get a little closure with Liam was good as well.

However: So much of this whole questline feels very…rough draft…maybe even, I don’t know…cut? Like, remember those found Scarlet Propaganda leaflets a couple years ago? I was hoping to see a build up of that, but no. I had no idea who these Scarlet people were, I couldn’t tell you now the names of the big ones I just killed, it just felt like Blizzard said, “throw these quests in there and call it a day”. I just feel like there could have been more things expounded on, and maybe certain aspects of this story a little more fleshed out. I will say, though, that the killing spree on the Scarlets was quite fun, though I found myself switching to Guardian spec because they …just…kept…spawning…everywhere!!!

BUT! We got Gilneas back. No it’s not totally revamped, and it doesn’t need to be. There are class trainers (Although I did not find Celestine anywhere), profession trainers, a banker, inn-keepers, and a Hearthstone toy that brings me back there whenever (part of the reward). For that, I’m happy. I’m sure we’ll see a more built up, revamped version by Midnight, and that’s okay.

REWARDS:

Putting aside the satisfaction of Gilneas having life in it again, the rewards you get are a transmog set, a hearth stone toy, and a mount. I’ll start with the transmog set:

Imgur

I’m really trying not to hate on this… BUT… Blizzard, you guys had to have seen the reactions our Heritage set had, and the multitudes of ideas floating around out there that could have fixed it. But instead of using some of those fantastic ideas as a reference, you doubled down on…gawdy blue and gold…and a satirical take on Victorian style. I really want to understand the thought process here, but I guess if this is it, well, maybie the shoulders on this will go well with the Heritage Set, I’ll have to play around with it and see.

Then there’s the mount…

Imgur

Why on Goldrinn’s furry behind am I on a white…Vulpera looking…thing??? This is yet another idea I’m trying to understand the thought process of. What part of this says “Gilnean”?? Where in Gilneas were there these…things? It is kinda cute…I just don’t feel that it fits.

So those are my thoughts. Overall, it was fun while it lasted, I’ll be running my other Worgen through it throughout the week and probably park them there so I can focus on this character for a while.

Again, these are just a few of my opinions. Feel free to express how you thought. Good? Bad? Ugly?

Have a good evening all!

EDIT: Okay I DID find Celestine. She’s in the tree in the Blackwald, with a Night Elf

Generally, sighted down the barrel of a rifle during a fox hunt.
Seeing it as a mount makes very, very little sense.

Personally I think there was some decent stuff in this questline, but there are a lot of negatives too. It’s a pretty mixed bag imo.

You’re a Worgen.
You run the 1st levels intro quests to get out of Worgenia.
You raise your status with Gilneas to exalted.
You return to free the city and claim your homeland.

And for your efforts you never receive “of Gilneas” as a title option.
Meanwhile, I can be of Gnomeregan without having a single gnome character.

I even did the questline on my worgen hoping for a title, customization, race specific mog… Just something but nope.

This is why there has to be a fox hunt otherwise they evolve. :robot::sweat_drops:

One thing that immensely bothers me, aside from the fact that it’s very annoying that we’re arbitrarily fighting the Scarlets instead of the Forsaken (didn’t have to be Horde Forsaken, could’ve been renegades who were just against the idea of ceding Gilneas back to the Alliance)… why weren’t the Crowleys more involves?

Darius and Lorna Crowley are both present, they fight in the courtyard near the end of the quest. So why were we fighting alongside Calia and Voss? Like, I like Voss, she’s probably one of my favorite Horde characters. But… why did we fight alongside her with Tess?

Why wasn’t the actual battle against the Scarlets longer where we could see more characters like Lorna or Darius showing off? Like, no lines from Darius about some irony about him fighting to free Gilneas again, only this time fighting alongside Genn? (Yes I know they had already fought together during the Worgen intro quest but… come on, man.) He’s the leader of the Gilneas Liberation Front. And he doesn’t have any real presence during Gilneas’ liberation?

Why did we barely see Celestine? She shows up, Genn orders her to go scouting, and then she’s just gone the rest of the quest? They couldn’t have her fighting against the Scarlet boss inside of the Cathedral instead of Calia? Some sorta symbolic thing about the Worgen, with their tight relationship with the Kaldorei, leaning more into the Old Ways of Druidism more instead of the Light? Nope, just Calia because… reasons.

You’ve already said everything else about the mount, the armor set, etc. so no point elaborating on that. After waiting for all of this time to get Gilneas back, I’m glad we have it back, but the process of getting it back feels… very half baked. To put it nicely.

Edit: Forgot to mention, Tess being the leader of Gilneas is cool, I like Tess. But now the Worgen racial leader… isn’t even a Worgen. Like if you were gonna do that, Blizz, why not make her a Worgen?

It is weird that with the centaur/tauren quest rewarding a special totem for doing it with a tauren, darkirons and bloodelves getting that special weapon set, and the bonus heritage color for nelves after the raid that the reclaiming of gilneas has nothing for worgen players when they finish it.Not a title, or extra mount, maybe an upgrade to darkflights graphic or the actual gilnean civilian teacup hats.

I read theres a flower you can pick up by liams grave that lets you directly port to gilneas as a worgen but i havent seen it confirmed thats exclusive to us.

This was a very dissapointing quest line, very short, sparse storyline and just a really poor job here from blizzard.

Might be worgen exclusive or might just be a buggy phase if you wanted to go check it on the worgen you ran through it.

Edit- Actually wowhead has the description updated looks like its a worgen specific gilneas hearthstone so theres that.

Oh, and I never found an innkeeper or a flightmaster in the retaken city.
There are gryphons still there so it’s not like they couldn’t just add a flightmaster.

This entire thing was a complete disappointment.

The toy is worgen exclusive. 30 min cooldown.

I never saw a Flightmaster either, but there are two innkeepers. Reference the second screenshot in my post, in that building behind me you’ll find Gwen Armstead. The second one I found is in that village on the outskirts, the name is escaping me right now, but it’s just outside the Blackwald. If you recall back to our starter questline it’s where we killed those spiders.

That would be Storm Glen, I’ll go check em out. Thanks!

Edit - just went back, no NPCs.
I’d talked to the the one inside Greymane Manor earlier and had them clear “for the day” I believe she said. That needs to be adjusted to her being there to toggle on/off or have another NPC somewhere in town to call everyone back.
First day patch trolled.

The toy says Race: Worgen underneath it when you pick it up

@ topic: the whole thing just feels like one of the devs jumped up last week and said “WAIT GUYS WE WERE SUPPOSED TO HAVE THE GILNEAS RECLAMATION FOR THIS PATCH” and so the entire dev team just slapped something together and called it a day. I don’t want to call the event unfinished, because I hesitate to even call it an event in the first place. What we had was alright, the problem was we didn’t have anything…10 minutes of kill quests, a boss that’s less mechanically intensive than a Classic boss, and then a heartwarming but uneventful cutscene. The transmog is ugly, the mount is cute but completely out of place, and the Worgen hearthstone is about the only actually cool thing…or at least it will be, if Gilneas becomes an actual city

There is an Innkeeper but no flightmaster, portal, or boat. Also no AH or the Gilneas Faction Quartermaster.

All it has are an Innkeeper, one Bank NPC, and Mailboxes.

It’s two Vulperas in a Fox mount suit.

Jokes aside, maybe they should have used a giant Mastiff hound mount

Oh boy, a teleport to a borderline worthless city with a thirty minute cooldown.
They really are spoiling us.

Hey, at least it’s an extra hearthstone! If there were portals it might be really useful.
