Rebalancing Wintergrasp Offense

TLDR: At Bottom

Dear Blizzard Staff,

Wintergrasp is a fun and challenging battleground with refreshing scenery, music, and vehicular dominance. But there’s only one side that feels to be getting dominated – offense.

Offense, by its nature, is designed to lay siege on and surround the keep’s walls. But this doesn’t occur in the vast number of Wintergrasp games I have played. Instead, offense begins in the middle of the map and separates itself to go to one of two defense-controlled workshops. Then a battle typically ensues at Sunken Ring. Here, because the defense already owns these workshops, as soon as defense obtains 10 kills, it will build max vehicles and slaughter the offense. From that point onward, defense is empowered with max vehicles, while offense has zero. Defense continues its clock-wise momentum as a snowball that crushes any in its path.

Many people on offense quit at that point. So some of those who did manage to obtain stacks toward purchasing a vehicle are gone. And new players join the game only to see that the defense has 75+ honorable kills and offense has less than 20. And the kill disparity only gets worse as time goes on.

Defense is gladly farming honorable kills, and offense is discombobulated. This is not how it should feel as playing offense. It’s simply not fun, and it’s very frustrating to not be able to lay siege on the keep. Even if offense gets as far as to destroy one wall, the defense bottlenecks and sets up an impenetrable barrier of catapults. Usually there is not enough time left in the game to split the siege to two different sides.

Wintergrap’s newest rendition suffers major flaws. But there are several ways to make this game better. Based upon my conversations with various offensive teams, (who, by the way, spend more time talking than playing due to the slow and crushing loss faced each time) there’s a list of ideas I would like to share. Any number chosen would help, but I do not ask that all be granted:

  1. Improve the power of offensive vehicles. Something new and different would be nice. I don’t see why both sides should have the same vehicles. Offense could have more siege-type vehicles and defense could have more turret-like vehicles.

  2. Allow the offense to build vehicles sooner, even as soon as the game begins. The stack system is terrible.

  3. Any new players who join the game >10 minutes in should begin at max vehicle rank.

  4. Improve the health, power, and strength of towers. An example would be to strengthen the npcs who defend it. Or add teleportation pads to allow the offense a faster way to get to the other towers.

Also, it would be nice if the towers caused less of an impact on the game when destroyed. A 5 minute time reduction along with 5% damage loss/gain is far too powerful of a buff. Reduce it to 2 minutes and 2% damage loss/gain. Or revamp or remove the entire tower system.

  1. Change the spawn location of offense to be closer to the workshops than the defensive team. This will allow for a better chance to have coordination and more time to set up a proper fight between both sides.

  2. UPDATE RPGGS. These are lackluster. Change them so that we can click and aim where we want to shoot, then keep the physics of the missile projection so that there is an element of skill involved in its use. Right now, I can’t even understand how the aiming system works. Sometimes It will shoot far far beyond the target, and other times it falls short.

TLDR: The offensive team is severely disadvantaged in Wintergrasp and a number of ideas or changes can be implemented to make the experience playing offense more epic and fun.

Such changes include: 1) Empowering offensive vehicles, 2) Allowing offense to build vehicles at the start, 3) Improving the health of towers and adding teleportation pads to allow quick travel to and from each tower, and 4) changing the offensive spawn to be closer to the workshops that the defense controls.

The RPGG change and the new players joining the game change should be implemented immediately.

Thanks for reading; please share your thoughts and support for rebalancing Wintergrasp.

Remember:
The main purpose of this post is to buff offense in Wintergrap and to make the game better and more fun to play.
