Realm Connections -- August 20

This could very well be the case and if so then there is no problem there. We’ll just have to chew through the regular queue with all the Hyjal players returning for Shadowlands. That’d be just fine. The queue times are not my only concern though. What happens to the economy on either realm? If Proudmoore is really a safe space for LGBTQ people will this connection affect that in a negative way? With this connection Proudmoore/Hyjal will have one of the highest populations of any server, perhaps even the highest. Will trade chat just be spam spam spam and more spam? I’ve played a little bit on servers like Illidan and Zul’jin and moved off them because I felt lost in the clamour of advertisers and just genuinely sour people talking in trade/general.

To back up some of my assumptions/concerns here is where I got my data from.

Keep in mind this data is most likely old and does not come from Blizzard themselves. All I have to go on is what WoWProgress has listed. And so far it looks like this connection will have a player population four times higher than the next set of connected realms. Again this data set appears to be from around the Crucible of Storms raid so it may not reflect current data. If Blizzard could maybe give us a look at what they have for data we could have a more informed discussion but this is what we have to work with.

WoWProgress -> Realms -> Sort by population*

The asterisk there states:
"* Population - amount of unique players that meet any of the two conditions:

  • has a level 110 character that killed something in Tier 24 Heroic Mode
  • has a level 110 character in a guild that killed something in Tier 24 Heroic Mode"

With this data we see that Proudmoore has an assumed alliance population of 14503 and Horde at 957 ranking them ninth overall for population. Hyjal on the other hand has an assumed population of 6773 horde players and 471 alliance players for a population of 16th overall. Connected Hyjal and Proudmoore will have a player population of 22704 ranking it third overall. The next highest pop. connected realm, according to this data, is Nagrand/Caelestrasz at 5438 total with 2313 horde and 3125 alliance and 23rd overall population rank. Proudmoore/Hyjal will have 4 times the population of the next highest connected realms. I am almost 100% certain that I am way off with my assumptions but again at first glance with this old data it does not look good.

There will be a large influx of CE guilds as Proudmoore currently has 24 with CE and 9 more well on their way. Hyjal has 13 CE guilds with 3 more working on N’zoth. With a large influx of cutting edge raiders coming in how will that affect prices of trade goods, pots, flasks etc. As a semi-hardcore CE raider will I still be able to afford to flask and pot every raid? Will I be able to have a viable alt to run with a second group and afford flasks/pots for them? Will BoE prices be insanely high or insanely low? With a full server coming in will there be people everywhere yumming up all the herbs/ore/skins? Will I be able to farm mats for myself and my guildmates without having to spend even more time than I already do?

From Wowpedia:
“All realms in a Connected Realm share a common Auction House. All realms in a Connected Realm share a common Trade Chat.”

From WoWWiki:
"As of Warlords of Draenor, all Auction Houses are connected between factions.
"

We have to remember that these are 2 realms that are functioning perfectly fine on their own. Yes there is a massive faction imbalance and that seems unfair for the assumed 1428 people that are affected by it. But of those 1428 how many are active on ONLY Proudmoore or ONLY Hyjal? Or how many of them are active AT ALL? It would be nice to hear from someone who is on the opposite side of the faction imbalance on these servers and get their opinions. Connecting these two realms also does not fit in with:

Neither of these realms could be considered “low-population”. Also, break out your tinfoil hats here but since this connection seems to be added on at the last minute as per:

One of these things is not like the others. It may just be a minor mistake but shouldn’t it read “The Hyjal realm will join the Proudmoore Realm”. Is this a conspiracy to cause mass transfers off either realm? Are we an experiment to see how much cash a connection like this can generate? Who knows? But with gaming companies looking to squirt every last dollar out of their products its not out of the realm of possibilities. In no way is this accusatory just food for thought!

why in god’s name would you connect hyjal and proudmoore? they’re both high population realm and proudmoore is “full” right now.

do you want us to have hour long queues and lag? who is in charge of these decisions?

Windrunner please… We’re all alone here.

People who have had realm mergers recently: What happened with your raid lockouts?

Why? What does having a server horde/alliance balanced change? We already CRZ with Proudmoore. The only thing this does is put us in danger of queues when Shadowlands releases.

As several people have pointed out here already:
They
Will
Not
Share
Login
Queues

They will act as connected realms, so separate login servers, but able to interact with each other/join each others guilds/trade/ah etc.

Seperate queue times will also be an issue.

Just imagine your guild wants to progress on a boss but your raid lead couldn’t show up an hour early to get through the queue. Meanwhile the horde is having a blast progging everything cause they don’t have to wait, or at least its a much shorter wait.

Same idea but a horde guilds recruit from proudmoore just got home late and is now in an hour queue time. If he was on Hyjal there is little or no wait. What does he do? Server transfer if he’s serious about playing.

If login servers aren’t shared people will be paying money to transfer TO THE SAME REALM just so they can log in and be competitive!

Then, regardless, at this point Blizzard has a responsibility to address this issue and let us know the logistics of their coming decision. Obviously there are many of us with a plethora of concerns, either misunderstood or unanswered, and since it is our communities being influenced, we deserve to know what’s in store for our servers.

if our server is medium then my mind is blown. And if it is medium, it must be near the threshold of low.

I SUPPORT THIS. I’d like to get my voice heard and I want Blizzard to know that there are people who SUPPORT this change.

For me, it will bring the following benefits:

  • A less inflated auction house, with better prices and more competition (making mark ups and insanely high prices less common)
  • Community: people here will say whatever they want to separate us apart, but this will make the world feel more alive, interactive, and it’ll be nice to see some new faces and get to know each other better.

Myths I’d like to dispel:

  • Server stability won’t become worse - sharding will still occur and the effect of having new players join will be less of a burden than people make it out to be.

Please Blizzard - proceed with this, I’m really looking forward to having a new environment.

Note: I main raid on Hyjal on a different toon, and I’m also transferring there for Shadowlands.

As someone who was on Proudmoore as alliance from SoO thru the later part of HFC, I am scarred from server queues. I remember WoD launch well, and the 9 hr+ queues to get in. I have experience with connected realms as well, since i went to Dragonblight/Fenris after that, and welcomed the lack of queues. That realm has died even more since then, down to 1350 ish people and no more realm connections from Blizzard mentioned. Now I am on Hyjal, and I fell in love. Small enough for no queues and yet large enough to have a good community and solid economy.

This idea of a connected realm being roughly the 3rd largest US server just seems like it is a bad choice. I am not anti connections, I think low pop servers need them. This one just doesn’t make sense.

this isn’t gonna have any effect on the auction house, both realms are high-pop as is.

how is this gonna make the world more alive and interactive? both realms are already overpopulated.

More people = more interactions = more resources in group finder, etc.

Something can’t be “overpopulated” if there is still capacity. “Overpopulation” here is a perceived issue - and not an actual one.

Blizzard is constantly making progress on their server technology, and they’ve made significant progress in recent years to streamline population density on any given server.

group finder is cross-realm and has been for years, this isn’t gonna affect that at all.

proudmoore is a “full” realm, which means it’s at maximum capacity. hyjal is a “high” realm, which means it’s near maximum capacity.

this isn’t “perceived.” check the realm status on your realm selection screen.

there are many low pop realms that should be connected. hyjal and proudmoore shouldn’t even be on a long term roadmap yet.

But combined, it’ll still be less than the most populated servers - and the most populated servers are doing fine.

So surely more friends can be a good thing <3

Hyjal is a goldilocks server, the jewel of the west.

High pop, but not so high that we ever have queue times. Brisk trade chat, but not flooded so you can’t get a word in. Nice, steady auction house.

Hyjal is perfect. And Blizzard wants to ruin it.

???

they’re already one of the most populated.

the most populated aren’t doing fine, there are queues and it’s gonna have longer queues once the expansion is out.

Hyjal-Proudmoore combined will be larger than any server except Stormrage.

Bigger than Area 52.
Bigger than Illidan.

Hyjal players don’t play on Area 52 or Illidan. Many Hyjal players LEFT Area 52 and Illidan, because they’re so crowded.

que times and faction balance aside.

population wise what i’m gathering from the demographics (which is an important factor) is that if this merge goes through this is gonna be like blizzards gaza strip in WoW.

blizz please learn from history.
