Really? Blizz

So after a very long time of not playing retail i decided to log in finally to try out the dragon race, made my charecter logged in kind of figured out what to do and made it to outlands…

On my first quest i noticed i was not seeing floating combat text, saw another player near me and said in say hey and how do you turn on combat text? which i dont know if they saw or not… a moment later i got a notification i was reported for language… what the heck blizz?

In some cases, the behaviour warning can be delayed. If you were reported in Classic and then started playing Retail, the behaviour warning might actually appear in Retail upon logging in.

This wasn’t delayed… the notification popped up after asking that question, i ended up logging off and its soured me permanently to retail… can get reported for asking a simple question

One person reporting you won’t result in a behaviour warning. There have been reports in the CS forum regarding this very thing. Players have been reported in one game version and sometime after they started another game version, then they saw the warning.

The warning is not instant and can’t be used as an indicator as to who reported you.

Well that is a horrible system if true regardless, it happened as soon as i said anything in retail, think maybe its time for me to move on from wow asking questions can get you banned

It likely wasn’t the result of asking a question, as I’ve stated previously. Here are a few posts from one of our Support Forum Agents (SFAs), the Blues who moderate the CS forum:

Please just stop for a moment and read Terise’s replies.

The system is set up as it is so that you can get the message no matter which version of the game you’re playing, but it’s only pushed when you’re actually active. You said you played retail a substantial time ago, but what about the other versions? Classic, Anniversary, Era?

The notification will pop up on whichever client you are next active after it has been pushed.

Asking questions will generally not get you banned, and certainly not within five minutes of asking it. There are exceptions to that rule, however-- but those are only for egregious situations.

I play classic i did not receive any warnings there ever in game atleast… i logged into retail asked a question in say and it popped up 10 seconds later, it was not there before

Right. So the notification was most-likely for something you were previously doing in Classic that you were reported for. You just logged into retail the next time you were active after that, so the notification popped up in retail instead of Classic.

It’s very likely from something prior playing Classic and it was delayed or something.

However on the off chance it isnt, I will say just make sure you aren’t using any profanity when asking questions. I know many returning players who have used a f bomb when they ask in chat how do turn on/off X.

I typed literally exactly what i said, and no it was not from classic

Note: This is pure speculation, as Blizzard hasn’t revealed exactly how this particular system works, and for good reason too.

It is entirely possible that the act of sending a chat message sort of “kicked” things into gear. After the chat message was sent, then the system retrieved the warning and displayed it.

End of Speculation

Again, that does not mean you did anything wrong in Retail, but it could’ve been something from Classic.

Exactly this. Profanity, no matter if it is clear or masked, is a violation of the In-game Code of Conduct. Same with toxicity.

You can’t know that for certain. As I’ve stated several times already, and as Ekon said, the warnings can be delayed and only show up when you login again or change game versions.

It’s possible one of the SFAs might be able to look into your chat, but that won’t be until the morning when they are back in the office.

Now I’m rather confused. In your OP, it appears as though you created your character, selected Burning Crusade from Chromie, went to Outland, then started your first quest.

Do you mean to say you were playing Retail for an extended period of time before you received the warning? If that’s the case, it could very well be a bug that caused it to appear so late. Another possibility would be you may have been reported the last time you played Retail and now it decides to show up when you logged back in. I understand it wasn’t immediately shown when you logged in, but it was shown nonetheless.

Once again, you will not receive a warning from a single report. If that were the case, it would be abused like crazy. Your best bet would be to wait to see if an SFA can shed any light on this. Just to set the proper expectations, neither CS nor the SFAs can see exactly what triggered the warning, unless it reaches the threshold to turn into an actual report that a GM would investigate.

I have not touched retail for about 2 years… i play classic and SoD, i decided tonight to try it again as its included with my subscription, i logged in made a new character the dragons, logged in was apparently already determined to be horde, took portal to org talked to chromie picked TBC finally found portal did quest to fly to thrallramar started first kill and gather quest…

Everything was normal till now… started killing things noticed i couldnt see my damage saw another player right by me said hey in /say and how do you turn on combat text? in say 10 seconds later i got a notification that i was reported for language

Again, I know it’s been said multiple times already, but just because you got the notification in retail doesn’t mean that you were reported in retail.

Just to be clear: What you were reported for may not have been retail at all. It might have been, it might not have been. You have no way of knowing that unless you got an email saying so or a SFA drops by letting you know.

Second, just because you were reported doesn’t really mean anything. If you did nothing wrong, nothing will happen. People can report you all they want and outside of a temporary automatic squelch you won’t get penalized if you are innocent.

I see that you’re kind of stuck on the idea that asking how to enable the scrolling combat text is what you got reported for, but this is extremely unlikely no matter how much you think it’s the case.

Edit also just to reiterate, you don’t usually get a notification if you’re reported unless it’s by a lot of people in a short time period. If only one person reports you, you would never know about it unless it results in a penalty for breaking the rules.

While I won’t make a wall of text for this one, your speculation is actually extremely likely; from a database/server optimization perspective. It would save a lot of server CPU cycles by not checking automatically and instead, waiting for the player to type a message to kick things off.

Either way, OP was reported for something in a non-retail version of the game and got the message in the retail version of the game. It’s all tied to the same systems.

Oh, we’re doing confirmation bias now?

Unless you peppered this with a cuss word, there would be nothing to report. That’s not to say someone didn’t report it, but a warning is not an account action or even something a GM can see. It’s simply to say “IF you are doing something you shouldn’t, then stop”.

Having said that…

This is where the warning came from, 100%. These kind of warnings/notifications often don’t show until you load a different version of the game. I logged into Classic last year on a maintenance day, and got bombarded with 50-60 notifications that players I reported were actioned.

Since I had just logged into Classic for the first time, they were obviously from Retail. It’s not ideal, and probably something they would like to fix, but it happens.
