I really don’t fathom how the matchmaking system is so broken. The last three BGs I have entered have been completely one sided. I’m not going to say that my team and I were particularly skilled or coordinated but I can tell you that in each one I had 2, maybe three teammates whose health pool surpassed 32k. Most hovered around 28-31k, respectable by all accounts but clearly average level gear. Upon encountering the enemy team however, it was very quickly apparent that the gear mismatch was not in our favor. Almost every individual encountered sat at 38k or more. Now, I understand that gear isn’t everything and sometimes you just have to ‘git gud’ but I feel like it shouldn’t be too difficult for blizzard to implement a system that smooths out these disparities to at least give the opposing teams a fighting chance. It makes me not want to play knowing that there is a chance that I am going to get demolished by individuals that severely out gear my team.
I get it, annihilating an enemy team and roasting them for 15 minutes is fun. Ill be the first to admit that I have enjoyed benefitting from such endeavors. But I also find it enjoyable to play the matches where we fight tooth and nail to the end. I think I would rather lose those matches 3 times as often and not have to deal with getting wrecked wholesale if I had the choice.
Really, I just don’t understand why the random queue doesn’t have an item level bracket to it. Like how low level pvp has brackets based on your level. Again, gear isnt everything when it comes to the game, knowing your class is well more than half the battle. I feel like however, if every match I went in pitted me up against players within 10 ilvl of me with teammates that were also within 10 ilvls of me I may actually find myself enjoying pvp more and not getting farmed for honor.
I’m sure that are some individuals out there who cry at the thought of not being able to stomp the poor geared and I do sympathize, I just find that the pvp scene is rapidly dying and I cant help but wonder if a huge part of that is due to the way in which the matchmaking systems in the game blatantly place the poor geared or low rated against their polar opposites. If people aren’t having fun, they aren’t going to stay playing and if there is nobody to annihilate than the people griefing aren’t going to play either.
P.S. To be clear, the dig about griefing is aimed specifically at the individuals who intentionally queue up to troll poorly geared people in BGs. How do I know people do this you ask? I found myself on the wrong side of AV against a Ruin gaming premade earlier today and a member of my group found their stream so that we could listen in.
What matchmaking in random BGs? Matchmaking is for RBGs not randoms. You are playing basically a first come first serve design with a few tweaks at attempting to balance some roles.
If the implement ilvl restrictions(similar gear on both sides like you said) you wouldn’t solve the problem. 220+ player. Takes off a few pieces of gear, game now reads him at 190, gets in bg, equips everything, now higher gear people can focus grief lower ilvl games. Can’t prevent gear swapping because some ppl have pve and pvp sets. Make a ilvl requirement? Cant do that either. A lot of people gear through pvp. Have to pvp to get pvp gear. A 220 PvE player with no vers will get deleted by a 190 full pvp gear toon(I’ve done it countless times). The only solution is to do what the achievement says. “I live, I die, I queue again”
So just que, when que pops, equip gear and enter bg. Like I said, you can’t prevent players from swapping gear. It isn’t a m+ setting to where gear and talents are locked. Thus why preparation buff exists for the 2 minutes before the bg starts(or for 1 min after you join if already started). There will ALWAYS be players better geared than others in battlegrounds. Just like if you que for a random heroic, are you going to be upset if there is a mythic raider in there just to flaunt dps? People that have higher gear will always do lower content.
Sure, I’ll gladly take off bracers and cloak to join a game at 190 ilvl but still a 207 weapon, trinkets and lego to where I still hit people for more than their health with TV. Wouldn’t be that hard. Lets not forget the massive increase in que times of up to 30 minutes for a random battleground now that blizzard is finding people close to your ilvl. Oh but what about queing with friends? Person that is 187 is group lead with a 222 in the part. Follows group leads ilvl because the higher geared joined through quick join. The problem will always be there. Just got to suck it up, get 1 shot, que again.
P.S. There are macros to swap gear. Meaning you can still que half naked and get the gear on before the game recognizes you are in que. It’s how data travels
I agree, though I could cherry pick anything I wanted out of anyone’s achievements. Neither I nor Zan work for blizzard so we’ll both be ignored in the end anyway. Too bad
Yeah, I saw it. Was more of a statement than actual argument. A lot of us 1400 heroes think we know what’s best for the game. I’m still waiting on my gladiator participation trophy for hitting level 60
Tonight was rough. Lol I did 3 random BGs, the enemy team had 40k premade players 2/3 of the games. But it happens, sometimes you get put on teams with huge geared players.
Yeah, im not saying that there is one specific solution and im not even saying that there will ever be a perfect solution. People are going to find a way to exploit the systems in whatever way that they can. I just think that the way that the queue works now, in that there is literally no system in place, deters a lot of people from playing the game. Queuing up players that have no chance against each other is just lazy and bad game design.
Exactly, there should be a little more effort from Blizzard to smooth out differences like this. Even the ‘role balancing’ is utter garbage most times. Idk how many times ive ended up in an epic BG where one team has 5+ more healers than the other. Obviously there is always going to be some amount of failure in the system due to people dodging last minute etc, but it blows me away that the raid finder system is designed to find exactly 2 tanks and 5 healers but the BG system cant be bothered.
Again, I don’t have a perfect answer for this issue. I don’t necessarily think that removing the ability to swap gear is the answer because not everyone PVEs with the gear that they PVP like you said. A potential solution could be for the game to look at the best in bags. I cant say this for a fact but I doubt there are many players that have pve sets that vastly out gear their pvp equivalent and I also highly doubt many people just have random high level equipment in their bags that they don’t intend on using. Even if that’s so, a matchmaking system that looks at best in bags 10 ilvl up and down still sounds like a potential idea to me and best in bags ilvl is something the game already tracks. Further, it wouldnt be too terribly difficult for the system to be designed to differentiate between different classes of gear. Turns out, the game knows the difference between mythic+ gear and conquest gear. I cant imagine it would be all that difficult to implement a system that looks at the best gear in your bags prioritizing pvp gear and the appropriate gear for that spec(trinkets, weapons) and then comparing all of it. Sure, you could then argue that mythic geared players could then buy low ilvl pvp gear to go in a crush newbies but you could set a maximum difference limit. For example, all the pvp gear in bags adds up to 164 ilvl but the pve gear is 220, they are going to be placed in the higher bracket.
Literally nobody entering heroics gets mad when high ilvl players come in to stomp the dungeon for them.
I personally would rather have a longer queue if it means i have a better chance at not getting stomped just because blizzard cant figure out how to make a matchmaking system that only benefits geared players. By your logic people would be happy if they removed all of the internal systems for dungeon finder because they could get into dungeons faster…with no tank or healer which makes them fail half the time. Also, the queueing system doesn’t have to just look at the party leads ilvl. Turns out, when you queue up for anything in game it has you role check. No reason it cant also check the other group members.
I know there is never going to be a perfect system. That’s just not reasonable. But there has to be something more that blizzard can do besides the absolute nothing they have done so far. And for the record, I appreciate the response. Though we seem to disagree on the merits of such systems, I do enjoy the opportunity to have a conversation about this kind of stuff.
Random BG’s are the place where Blizzard’s complete lack of vision for PvP really shines. One team has 226 gear and sits at 42k HP, the other team has 197 gear and sits at 32k HP. It’s a shame we can’t gamble on it.
This can also be seen in the 1200-1800 arena bracket. Blizzard’s idea of a fun video game.
